Jose Joe Madera, born in New York City, played timbales with Machito in his teens. He later became Tito Puentes conguero for 30 years and was the musical director of the Tito Puente Orchestra for 10 years. Jose has been staff arranger at Fania Records since the 1970s and has performed on over 100 recordings in Latin, Pop, R&B, and Jazz music.

Wood Congas
Our drums are made from the highest quality woods: select North American Ash and Siam Oak, chosen for sound quality and durability. Before manufacturing, the wood is kiln dried to ensure structural integrity and long life. Once seasoned, the wood is cut into precisely measured strips called staves which are layered into multiple plies and glued together. A steam press bends them into the shape of the drum. LPs custom-designed machines create a compound-miter cut, joining the wood properly and ensuring an extremely durable shell. Internal steel reinforcement pins eliminate the need for bands around the exterior of the drum. This process is unique to LP and creates a drum with superior structural integrity. Each drum is placed onto a lathe, and turned into its final form. Every conga is painstakingly sanded to a smooth finish making it appear seamless. Special attention is paid to the drums bearing (upper) edge which enhances the overall sound quality and keeps the head from tearing. LP wood congas have a layer of fiberglass added to the inside of the shell where the side-plates are located. This increases the strength of the shell at the highest stress area. The interior is then sealed with a special finish to prevent moisture absorption, allowing the drum to stand up to harsh playing conditions and climate changes. Stain is then applied, by hand, to the exterior. Multiple coats of polyurethane are applied to seal the wood. Each coat is sanded between applications, providing a glass-like sheen.

Fiberglass Congas
The construction of fiberglass drums was first popularized and refined by Latin Percussion in the 1960s. These drums have traveled the world and become renowned for their strength, beauty, and loud, bright sound. They begin with drum molds that are maintained to assure the highest quality finish. Colored, liquid gel coat is applied to the inside of the mold to a carefully controlled thickness, creating a drum that has a long lasting, deep color. Alternating layers of matte and woven fiberglass are applied by hand, using the finest, virgin fiberglass. A high fiberglass-to-polyester resin ratio makes the congas stronger and less prone to warping. Percussive testing is performed to make sure there are no air voids in the shell that would weaken it. Only LP fiberglass conga shells have a steel ring embedded at the bearing edge of each drum for added strength, making the drum able to withstand years of road abuse.
Conga Hardware
Great care is taken to ensure that the edges on all of our hardware are smooth. LP Galaxy tuning lugs are 3/8" in diameter and are 40% stronger than standard tuning lugs. Other LP and Matador tuning lugs are 5/16" in diameter. LP Aspire tuning lugs are 9/32" in diameter. Trademarked LP Heart side plates, crafted of gas-welded, heavy-gauge steel, evenly distribute the load on the drum shell. Matador Congas receive horn-shaped side plates and LP Aspire models have smaller versions of the Heart design. All of our tuning lugs have precision-cut threads for smooth tuning and long life. They have been heat-treated for maximum strength and durability.

Hand drums had always used traditional-style steel rims. The flat, upright design (see Figure 1) of these rims can be especially hard on a players hands. After years of research, LP introduced the patented LP Comfort Curve rim. Its curved top eliminated the hard edge and minimized the pain caused by traditional-style rims. It moved the major impact point away from the palm of the hand to the heel of the hand. Continued research resulted in the finest rim in the world the LP Comfort Curve II rim (see Figure 2). This updated and patented design has a broad top edge with a gentle, large radius curve that takes the pain out of playing and reduces calluses. The high-strength steel is 4mm thick and its unique design and high-tech construction makes it the strongest rim manufactured. Further research resulted in a modification to the Comfort Curve II rim. The Extended Collar Comfort Curve II rim extends the distance between the bearing edge and the rim. This breakthrough allows for increased tonal range while providing even greater comfort (see Figure 2). Matador drums have Matador Soft Strike rims (see Figure 3). LP Aspire drums offer the LP Aspire EZ Curve rims (see Figure 4). The redesigned LP Aspire EZ Curve rim has a rolled interior edge that holds the skinwire firm and even. Matador rims are crafted of heavier gauge steel than LP Aspire. Both rim styles are more rounded in shape than traditional rims, making them less painful to play.

Clave is the rhythmic pattern that forms the basis of Latin music. Clave is phrased in what is known as a 3/2 (forward clave) or 2/3 (reverse clave) feel. That is, three beats then two beats or, two beats then three beats. Claves are the traditional instruments used to play clave and are comprised of two sticks that are struck together to get a sharp, cracking sound. One is called the Clave or male, while the other is the Striker or female. The Clave lays in one hand between the fingertips and the heel of the hand, with the thumb out for support. This space between the Clave and the palm of the hand creates a sound chamber. The Striker is held as a beater in the other hand and is struck against the Clave.

The LP Claw is the most unique mounting system in the world. Introduced in the early 80s, it has since become a standard among studio engineers, drum techs, drummers, and percussionists in all areas of music. The unique design of the LP Claw provides a variety of placement choices for splash cymbals, percussion accessories, and microphones. The contoured jaws, with lined rubber mounts, fit tight to any standard drum rim and to all LP rims.
