Eleven scientists have beenselected for Shanti SwarupBhatnagar Prize-2012, India’spremier awards in the field of science and technology.Shantanu Chowdhury of theInstitute of Genomics andIntegrative Biology and SumanKumar Dhar of the Special Centrefor Molecular Medicine at theJawaharlal Nehru Universitybagged the prize in the field of biological sciences.In the area of chemicalsciences, the prizes went toGovindsamy Mugesh of the IndianInstitute of Science, Bangalore(IISc) and Gangadhar J Sanjayanof the CSIR National ChemicalLaboratory, Pune.Ravishankar Narayanan of IISc and Y Shanthi Pavan of IndianInstitute of Technology-Madras wonthe prizes in the engineeringsciences category. In the field of mathematical sciences, SivaRamachandran Athreya andDebashish Goswami of the IndianStatistical Institute won theprestigious prize.Sandip Basu of theRadiation Medicine Centre atBhabha Atomic Research Centrebagged the prize in the medicalsciences category.In physical sciences, Arindam Ghosh of IISc andKrishnendu Sengupta of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science won the prize.The winners wereannounced by Samir KBrahmachari, Director General of Council for Scientific and IndustrialResearch at a function here to markthe 70th foundation day of Council.The prize is named after thefounder-Director General of CSIRand carries a cash component of Rs five lakh. It is given annually toyoung scientists below the age of 45 who have made outstandingcontributions in any field of scienceand technology.
Gulzar nominated for27th Indira Gandhi Awardfor National Integration
Renowned poet and film-maker Gulzar has been nominatedfor the 27th Indira Gandhi Award for National Integration. CongressPresident Sonia Gandhi will giveaway the 27th Indira Gandhi Awardfor National Integration to the 75-year-old lyricist and writer onOctober 31 in recognition of hisyeoman work in promoting andpreserving spirit of nationalintegration in the country.The Award consists of acitation and cash of Rs. 5 lakh.Before Gulzar, some of the other film personalities who received theaward are director Shyam Benegal,lyricist Javed Akhtar, musiccomposer AR Rahman and writer Mahashweta Devi.
Waheeda Rehman to receive Lifetime Achievement Award
Waheeda Rehman, the veteran actress of Bollywood has beennominated to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The award willbe presented to the actress during the forthcoming 14th Mumbai FilmFestival going to start from 18 October 2012 and end on 25 October 2012. C.I.D. (1956), Pyasa (1957), Solva Saal (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool(1959), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), and Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam (1962),Kohra (1964), Guide (1965), Teesri Kasam (1966), Mujhe Jeene Do(1966), Neel Kamal (1968) and Khamoshi (1969) are some importantfilms by her name. The committee chaired by Filmmaker, ShyamBenegal in presence of Ramesh Sippy, Sudhir Mishra, MAMI trusteeand Amit Khanna, chairman, Reliance Entertainment stated that theyhave made their decision to award Waheeda Rehman with life timeachievement award for her contributions to Indian Cinema.

Haryana Government instituted Awards toFelicitate Women
Haryana government on 18September 2012 instituted four state-level awards to felicitatewomen who have doneoutstanding work in different fields.Three of the awards include IndiraGandhi Mahila Shakti Award,Kalpna Chawla Shaurya Award andBahin Shano Devi Panchayti Raj Award. The fourth award comprisesof two awards, Life time Achievers Award and Women Outstanding Achievers Award. These awardswould come into effect from thecurrent financial year 2012-13.Indira Gandhi Mahila Shakti Award, would be given to thewomen who has done exemplarywork in rehabilitation of destitutewomen and children, widows,victims of atrocities and conflictdisabled women and children,aged women.Kalpna Chawla Shaurya Award named after astronautKalpna Chawla, would be given tothose who perform acts of braveryand meritorious services. Theaward would carry a cash prize of 51000 rupees and a citation.Life Time Achievement Award would given to woman of 60years of age or above, who hasexcelled in administrative skills,career or profession, leadershipquality, courage and creative work.It would carry a cash prize of Rs21,000 and a citation and a shawl.
Aung San Suu Kyi got US Congress Highest Honour
The Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi received, the USCongress highest Civilian Honour at a ceremony organized in theCapitol Rotunda on 19September 2012, beforeher meet with the USpresident Barack Obama.Before her, the recipient of this award includesGeorge Washington,Pope John Paul II andDalai Lama-the TibetanBuddhist Leader. Duringher 15 year long house arrest against the military rule in Myanmar, shereceived the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008.
Virat Kohli became theICC ODI Cricketer of theYear
The Vice-Captain of IndianCricket team, Virat Kohli wasnamed as the ODI Cricketer of theyear at ICC Awards Function heldat Colombo, Sri Lanka on 15September 2012. He was pickedahead in the competition fromMahendra Singh Dhoni, Kumar Sangakkara and Lasith Malinga. Hewas awarded with this title for scoring 1733 runs in 31 matchesat an average of 66.65, whichincluded eight centuries and sixhalf-centuries.
