Experiment no. 5
OBJECT:
Calcination of lime stone and estimation of calcium oxide
APPARATUS AND REAGENTS:

Sand crucible.

Bunsen burner.

Tripod stand.

Wire gauze.

Crucible holder.

Muffle furnace.

CaCO
3
.
REACTIONS:

PROCEDURE:
Take a sand crucible and weight it
(W
1
 )
.Take about 2-3 grams of
CaCO
3
in the crucibleand again weight it
(W
2
 )
.Now heat on Bunsen burner for 10 min and cool and again weight it
(W
3
 )
.Moisture and volatile matter will escape from the compound.The difference of two weights
2
and
3
will give the amount of moisture and volatile matter.After that heat strongly for 1hour in a furnace, cool and weigh
(W
4
 )
. So that
CaCO
3
decomposes into
CaO
and
CO
2
.
CO
2
leave the compound and the
CaO
remains in crucible, the difference of two weights
(W
4
-W
1
 )
will give the amount of
CaO
.
CALCULATIONS:
Calculate percentage of moisture and volatile matter(MVM):
Weight of crucible + lid =
1
= 19.95 gWeight of
CaCO
3
+ crucible + lid =
2
= 22.90 g
