Colour Connotations...

The colour red has conflicting connotations; From love and passion to anger and hatred. It is conveyed in many different ways in text and images. For example the magazine Q uses a lot of red in the magazine as the genre of their mag is rock; Rock is seen to be an aggressive genre of music.

Yellow is a bright colour that connotes happiness and joy. It is seen as one of the most positive colours.

Blue has connotations of feeling calm and tranquil. However lighter shades of blue connote sadness. The colour blue has always been seen as the colour for boys.

The first connotation of green is the environment. It is associated with all this clean e.g. Fresh air. The second connotation of the colour green is jealousy. A good example would be when someone calls someone else whos jealous of something the green-eyed monster.

Pink also connotes love and passion and conveys emotions of enthusiasm, joy and positive energy. It is stereotyped as being a girly colour.

The colour orange combines the passion of red and the happiness of yellow. It is seen as a positive colour as it has connotations of joy, sunshine and also the sun (which makes people happy).

Purple is associated with luxury, wealth, and power. It is used quite a lot in products for females.

Black connotes death, mystery and evil. It is very often negatively associated with fear of the unknown, for example black holes and space. Also black is seen as being a formal and elegant colour, an example of this would be a black tie event at a party/ball.

The colour white has connotations of purity and cleanliness. It is used quite a lot in religious settings, i.e. a brides dress. It also has connotations of heaven, e.g. Angels and clouds.
