ETFO Advice on the Progress Report Card

The Elementary Progress Report Card was designed to give parents/guardians/ caregivers an early general indication of a student's progress at the outset of the school year. Progress Reports were never intended to report on achievement. Teachers are to use their professional judgement when completing the Progress Report Card. Teachers are not expected to comment on every subject or learning skill. A single sentence indicating strengths/next steps for improvement in each of the two comment boxes is appropriate. In the case of the Elementary Progress Report Card, it is not necessary for teachers to comment on all subjects/strands in the one space provided for comments. Growing Success, Page 64.

Notes: In situations where more than one teacher teaches the same student/class, it is recommended that those teachers collaborate on the development of a single one sentence comment. If Needs Improvement/Progressing With Difficulty is indicated, an extended comment is appropriate. If the expectations for a student with an IEP vary from the expectations for the regular program for the grade, teachers must check the IEP box for that subject on the Progress Report. In instances where a students program is not based on the expectations from the Ontario curriculum for Grades 1-8, an alternative form, which may require additional comments, may be used to report the students progress. Once you have submitted your progress reports to your administrator, your professional obligations regarding the content of the progress reports are complete.
