Introduction
Within Leeds, we recognise that it is important that everybody has the opportunity tobe in paid employment. People with learning disabilities tell us that they, like most of the population, want to work. Employment is also one of the best ways of achievingreal social inclusion. Unfortunately, many people with a learning disability havedifficulty getting a job. A lot of work has been done in Leeds over the past few yearsto support people with learning disabilities to get jobs, but we recognise that thereare still changes that we need to make to make.We need to change the way that employers and people in society think about peoplewith learning disabilities and raise everybody’s expectation to realise that they canwork and become valuable employees. We also need to make sure that there aregood systems in Leeds that support people to access employment; from learning thenecessary skills, to getting and keeping a paid job. We also recognise that we needto work with employers to support them to confidently and effectively employ peoplewith learning disabilities. Please see Appendix 1 for the list of organisations and individuals who have beenconsulted on this strategy and as signed up to its implementation.3Final Version
