Former Rapid City mayor Jim
Shaw believes the police officer
who stopped him Tuesday had
no reason to pull out his gun.
“It seems to me this is anoverreaction times 10,” Shaw
said Wednesday afternoon. “All
I did was apparently go too fast
on the road — clear day, no rain,
no traffic. I certainly wasn’t
driving unsafely.”
On Tuesday afternoon, po-lice arrested Shaw, 65, afterhe failed to stop for Rapid CityPolice Officer Justin Gizzi, who
was attempting to pull him over
for allegedly driving 52 mph ina 40-mph zone. Police say thatafter Shaw stopped, he jumped
out of his car and ignored Gizzi’s
commands, causing the officerto draw his gun on Shaw, whoofficials say did not follow the
officer’s instructions.
Shaw said he was surprised
and concerned for his life when
he saw the gun, especially be-
cause the officer appeared to be
