BookBedonnerd V October 25,26, 27, 2012A Richmond Community Development Foundation Project
BOOKTOWN RICHMOND OCTOBER 2012 NEWSLETTERWell, the big day is almost upon us. I don’t know about you but I just can’t wait! Fromwhat I hear there is once again not a single room available in town. Looks like Peter and Ineed to write to the Protea group! Because I know we could fill Richmond 3 times over, such is the excitement around this festival. The big news is that Boeta Gammie, known in this part of the world as ‘The Elvis of theNamaqualand’, will be performing in Richmond on the Friday evening; and of course don’tforget David Kramer! You can be assured we will close BoekBedonnerd off with a bang and a few of David’s signature songs and moves!Lastly, I will e-mail all writers in the next few days with accommodation arrangements. So never fear, when I am near!!!Just for the record in case you missed the following in the earlier letters....
Once again William Humphreys Art Gallery in Kimberley will be hosting “RichmondFilums” as well as holding art workshops, music and entertainment for the kids of the village. Dave Chislett, writer, performer, and creative artist will be holding aninteractive workshop with the kids on the Saturday morning which looks like agreat addition to the line-up of activities WHAG always provides. They will also beshowing adult Filums (No not that sort of adult Filums!) in the late afternoons all totake place in the Richmond Town Hall on Loop Street. In addition there will be showings of vintage filums at the Krip next to the MarinaGuest House on Pienaar Street.

The Richmond Horse Museum will be open from early until late and it is well worththe visit. It houses a superb collection of antiques and a plethora of equine relatedartefacts. Admission is free to all visitors over the book fair so take advantage of this once in a lifetime offer!!!!Chris Shelton, local book dealer and our resident bushman and angler, will betaking conducted walking tours up to the Vegkop Boer War fort which overlooksthe dorp. He will give a running commentary of the events happening around theold fort before, during and after the Boer War: Departure for sundowners on thehill from the Supper Klub at around 6:00pm. Chris can be contacted for bookings at083-600-1962.MAP South Africa will be hosting exhibitions from their collection of art works andwill be focusing on art as it relates to both books and storytelling. They always puton such a polished show and should not be missed. They will be open for the entireduration of BookBedonnerd and into the evenings so stroll on down the road.MAP will also once again, for which we are very grateful, be hosting the bookrestoration and recovery workshops sponsored by the National Library of SouthAfrica. Please contact Jenny or Mandla for information regarding these workshops. JENNY RAATS 072-602-0403walkthetalk@telkomsa.netMANDLA 021-487-5630 There has been feverish activity between Johannesburg and Richmond as are inthe process of launching the construction of a 60km walking trail from Richmondwhich will include a foot path outlining the endemic but highly endangeredRiverine Rabbit. This trail and the Riverine Rabbit will eventually be visible fromGoogle Earth much as our famous richmondnc.co.za website is visible on Google. The geo-artists envisage that the trail and the rabbit which will bisected by the N1Highway will serve to indicate our deep concern and anxiety about the survival of this rare species but equally our ability to survive as citizens of the Karoo in theface of the horrific onslaught to our environment should the exploitation of shalegas be allowed to proceed. Watch this space for details.Last year there was quite a bit of stress at the various eateries in town with thehuge rushes at lunch and in the evening. If you are a group or in a rush pleasecontact the restaurant in order to reserve in advance. All restaurants are on theRichmond web site..www.richmondnc.co.za  This promises to be the best BoekBedonnerd on record as we enter our 6
th
yearand our 5
th
Festival. We look forward to seeing you in the dorp, the more so in thelovely Karoo springtime!Accommodation is, as you are no doubt aware, at a premium during the weekendof the Book Festival, so if you would like to camp or trailer, the Richmond CountryClub...a.k.a. the Grys Paleis will have all the facilities you will require. Pleasecontact Johan at the Club at 053-693-0311 (4-6pm) orbooktownrichmond@mweb.co.za  The local farming community will be providing lamb and mutton in whateverconfiguration required.
