NC AS A SWING STATE
Dear Readers,It might seem rather strangelytimed to cover gun violence duringan election in which gun laws aren’teven at stake. Why choose to coverguns rather than the economy?Frankly, I can’t think o a bettertime. The argument over the right tobear arms, in all o its moral ambigu-ity, epitomizes all that is complicatedabout American politics. I your rightto bear arms can inringe upon myright to live and breathe, do we bothend up losing? The question isn’t limited to guncontrol. Does the right o the West-boro Baptist Church to protest a gaysoldier’s uneral inringe upon theright o the mourners to grieve inpeace? Does a woman’s right to a-ordable birth control inringe uponher religious employer who doesn’tagree with contraception?I we can communicate about theissues surrounding gun violence, wecan communicate about even themost complex, contentious issuesat stake in this election. And i wecan do that, maybe we can makeprogress with clarity and leave theviolence behind.Happy reading!Carey HanlinEditor-in-Chie

The Case or Stricter Laws
America prides itsel on its reedoms,as it should. But ater Gabrielle Gi-ords’ shooting, the Aurora shooting, and the Sikh Temple shootings......when should we ask i oneperson’s right to easy gun access istriumphing over another’sright to live?America’s gun violence ar outweights thato any developed country in the world.
