INTRODUCTION
:
Dr
.
Helen

Roseveare
,
missionary

to

Zaire
,
told

the

following

story
. "
A

mother

at

our

mission

station

died

after

giving

birth

to

a

premature

baby
.
We

tried

to

improvise

an

incubator

to

keep

the

infant

alive
,
but

the

only

hot

water

bottle

we

had

was

beyond

repair
.
So

we

asked

the

children

to

pray

for

the

baby

and

for

her

sister
.
One

of

the

girls

responded
. '
Dear

God
,
please

send

a

hot

water

bottle

today
.
Tomorrow

will

be

too

late

because

by

then

the

baby

will

be

dead
.
And

dear

Lord
,
send

a

doll

for

the

sister

so

she

won
'
t

feel

so

lonely
.'
That

afternoon

a

large

package

arrived

from

England
.
The

children

watched

eagerly

as

we

opened

it
.
Much

to

their

surprise
,
under

some

clothing

was

a

hot

water

bottle
!
Immediately

the

girl

who

had

prayed

so

earnestly

started

to

dig

deeper
,
exclaiming
, '
If

God

sent

that
,
I
'
m

sure

He

also

sent

a

doll
!'
And

she

was

right
!
The

heavenly

Father

knew

in

advance

of

that

child
'
s

sincere

requests
,
and
5
months

earlier

He

had

led

a

ladies
'
group

to

include

both

of

those

specific

articles
."
Early

African

converts

to

Christianity

were

earnest

and

regular

in

private

devotions
.
Each

one

reportedly

had

a

separate

spot

in

the

thicket

where

he

would

pour

out

his

heart

to

God
.
Over

time

the

paths

to

these

places

became

well

worn
.
As

a

result
,
if

one

of

these

believers

began

to

neglect

prayer
,
it

was

soon

apparent

to

the

others
.
They

would

kindly

remind

the

negligent

one
,"
Brother
,
the

grass

grows

on

your

path
.”

Prayer

is

a

high

and

holy

privilege

and

responsibility
.
As

God
s

children
,
we

can

come

freely

and

boldly

to

His

throne

and

share

with

Him

our

needs
!
Seven

times

in
prayer
.
As

followers

of

Christ

we

are

called

to

be

prayerful

in

the

troubles

of

life
.
 James

encourages

us

to

pray

in

four

specific

situations

in

life
:
WE
VE

GOT

TO

PRAY

 JUST

TO

MAKE

IT

TODAY
.
1.
PRAYER

FOR

THE

SUFFERING
// (
 James
5:13 )
The

word
su
ering
carries

the

connotation

of
su
ering

in

di
cult

circumstances
.”
Paul

used

this

word

to

describe

the

circumstances

he

was

in

as

he

su
ered

for

the

Gospel
s

sake
( 2
Tim
2:9 ).
As

God
s

people

go

through

life
,
they

often

must

endure

di
culties

that

are

not

the

results

of

sin

or

the

discipline

of

God
.
What

should

we

do

when

we

find

ourselves

in

such

trying

circumstances
?
We

must

not

grumble

and

criticize

against

those

who

are

having

an

easier

time

of

it
(
 James
5:9 );
nor

are

we

to

blame

God
.
We

are

told

to

pray
,
asking

God

for

the

wisdom

we

need

to

understand

the

situation

and

use

it

to

His

glory
(
 James
1:5 ).
PRAYER

CAN

REMOVE

SUFFERING
,
IF

THAT

IS

GOD
S

WILL
.
BUT

PRAYER

CAN

ALSO

GIVE

US

THE

GRACE

WE

NEED

TO

ENDURE

TROUBLES

AND

USE

THEM

TO

ACCOMPLISH

GOD
S

PERFECT

WILL
.
GOD

CAN

TRANSFORM

TROUBLES

INTO

TRIUMPHS
. (
 James
4:6 )
PAUL

prayed

that

God

might

change

his

circumstances
,
but

instead
,
God

gave

Paul

the

grace

he

needed

to

turn

his

weakness

into

strength
( 2
Cor
12:7-10 ).
 JESUS

prayed

in

Gethsemane

that

the

cup

might

be

removed
,
and

it

wasn
t
;
yet

The

Father

gave

Him

the

strength

He

needed

to

go

to

the

cross

and

die

for

our

sins
.
