YOUNG, BLACK, AND MURDERED

If you are black and have a hoodie on you may want to stay inside of your home. 17 yr old Trayvon Martin was shot and killed on Feb. 26 in the central Florida town of Sanford. The US justice department could bring a hate crime charge against 28 yr old shooter George Zimmerman if there is sufficient evidence the slaying was motivated by racial bias and not simply a fight that got out of control. After reviewing the 911 call from Zimmerman it sounded like he was pursuing Martin even after the 911 dispatch told him not to. During that 911 call Zimmerman says They always get away...fucking coons. Another call was made by a neighbor of Zimmermans and you can hear Martin screaming at the top of his lungs for help and shortly after you hear a gunshot and then silence. The new Black Panther party has called mobilization of ten thousand black men and has offered a ten thousand dollar reward for the capture of Zimmerman. Apparently Zimmerman has not been charged and Police Chief Bill Lee has announced that he was stepping aside from his post. What effect does this have on America? What happened to an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? And what about Martin Luther King Jrs I have a dream speech? Here we are black America looking in the mirror at that ugly face that so often pops its nasty and despicable head up...Theres no doubt in my mind that George Zimmerman is a racist who murdered Trayvon Martin in cold blood.

You may remember Zig Zag from Nasty Boy clique or NB ridahz. Hes definitely one AZs truest and hardest grinding artist. When asked about the 7yr break up of NB ridahz, Zig Zag stated that the record company came in and divided him and M.C. Magic. Also he stated that after NB ridahz break up, to be in the same room with M.C. Magic was like two big dogs in the same room ready to attack each other but could not due to the deep love they once had for each-other. Zig Zag also believes that the breakup of NB Ridahz was supposed to happen at that time for whatever reasons. When we asked Zig Zag if he ever saw NB ridahz getting back together he stated Its like having an old girlfriend that you havent seen in awhile, and once you see her again, shes fat and ugly. Zig Zag has put together his own record label featuring AZ artist and is on tour. For features and booking, email zigzanatra@yahoo.com or arizonaundergroundmagazine@hotmail.com.

Lil Flip
Amid the flourishing underground rap scene of Houston, Lil' Flip rose to quick and prosperous fame after his independently released 2000 album The Leprechaun broke through to a national audience, prompting the young rapper's signing to Universal Records soon after. Nicknamed the Freestyle King, Flip as a teen initially won the attention of the immortalized DJ Screw, who ushered the rapper into his loose-knit Screwed Up Click. The affiliation brought instant respect for Flip throughout Texas as well as the greater South, and his Leprechaun album capitalized on that, moving an impressive number of units for an independently released album. The album's slowly mounting yet ultimately broad reach and Flip's youthful appeal attracted Universal Records, who signed the barely 20 year old to a major-label contract in 2002 and released Undaground Legend later in the year. Driven by the lead single, "The Way We Ball," as well as a remix of "I Can Do Dat," a hit previously released on The Leprechaun, the album extended Flip's audience nationally and heralded him as one of the South's most promising young rappers of the early 2000s. In 2002, Flip returned with Undaground Legend, a slick sophomore effort. It would go practically unnoticed. Two years later, Flip returned to the scene with the more expansive double-disc set U Gotta Feel Me. The set spawned a couple sizable hits, namely "Game Over (Flip)" and "Sunshine," and brought Flip the national fame he'd long been courting. With that fame came competition, and it wasn't long before Flip was beefing with T.I. for the right to don the crown of King of the South. Flip kept his profile public not only with such drama but also with a string of mixtapes, most notably the Freestyle Kings series, which reached its sixth volume in 2005. Flip's next album was planned to follow that year, but at the last minute Sony refused to release it and the rapper was without a label for the next three years. I Need Mine finally appeared in 2007 as a double CD on the Asylum label. Two collaborations followed. All Eyez on Us from 2008 found the rapper partnering with Outlawz member Young Noble, while 2009's Certified was recorded with Young Money member Gudda Gudda. Jason Birchmeier, Rovi.

R Dub! was just 16 when he created Sunday Nite Slow Jams in the summer of 1994, and has since hosted and produced the show throughout the years. Born in Chicago and growing up in L.A. and Orlando, Florida, R Dub! spent his time staying up late at night listening to various "Slow Jams" type radio shows around the country. He loved the music and the overall mood of Slow Jams and at age 13 decided his dream was to host his own Slow Jam show. At age fifteen after moving to Tucson, Arizona with his family, R Dub! got his first chance in radio, volunteering at the local public radio station. Although he was on in the middle of the night, broadcasting out of a tiny radio station that didn't have many listeners, he was happy to be playing his Slow Jams...and even if just one person was listening, he knew he was making a difference in their night! By the time R Dub! was a junior in high school, he was the full-time Slow Jams show host at the local hip-hop station, where Sunday Nite Slow Jams was born in 1994. As the years went by, and radio stations came and went, R Dub! managed to keep the Sunday Nite Slow Jams alive, taking them with him whenever he changed stations.

R Dub! spent a year constructing his own broadcast studio inside his home. Shortly after the facilities were completed in 2002, Sunday Nite Slow Jams went national, debuting in two new markets: Tulsa, Oklahoma and Nogales, Arizona. On his birthday, December 1st, 2005, R Dub! launched his very own 24-hour Slow Jams internet radio station, so people could enjoy Slow Jams seven days a week! In December of 2007 R Dub!s fantasy of creating an actual 24-hour all-Slow Jams radio station came true, when he launched Slow Jams Radio 92.3FM in Los Angeles. The station is Hot 92.3s HD Digital Side Channel and can be heard in Los Angeles at 92.3FM digital channel two on any receiver with HD technology. Soon after the launch of Slow Jams Radio in Los Angeles, Clear Channel Radio picked up the format as part of their national HD programming. Philadelphia and Baltimore and Honolulu are two of the first markets outside of Los Angeles to air Slow Jams Radio! Recently, R Dub! decided to follow his dream to live (and do Slow Jams) in Brasil. After being granted a work visa to live in Brasil, he leased an apartment on the beach, packed up his stuff, and gave notice to the radio station in Tucson where he worked full-time as

Program Director and Afternoon host. But Brasil just wasnt in the cards for Dub just yet, as only FOUR DAYS before departing to Brasil forever, he received an offer for the dream job at his favorite radio station on the planet--Hot 92.3 in Los Angeles. He completed a two-year contract of service as the radio stations Program Director, which finished in March of 2009. Today R Dub! lives between residences in Tucson, Arizona; Recife, Brasil; and San Diego, California, where he can be heard weekday afternoons from 3PM to 7PM on Magic 92.5FM. His Sunday Nite Slow Jams still airs every Sunday night, in addition to a weeknight version, and can now be heard all across the country and around the world in over 50 cities. Visit the website at http://slowjams.com to keep up with Rdub. Also follow him through twitter and facebook.

The Man That Started it All

I started Arizona Underground Magazine in June 2010. How this all came about was in 2008 when i got signed to a record label out of Chicago. I was supposed to do a 25 city tour so I contacted a magazine I heard about in Tucson that was claiming to be the magazine of the street called Street Monstaz magazine. I hooked up with them started making moves. The record company in Chicago wanted to see the magazine issue with me featured on the cover, but when it was time for them to produce the issue; they didnt have the weight that they were claiming they had to do so. Once I realized that all that talk was all bullshit and lies, I met up with Matt Fink who was designing for Street Monstaz magazine at the time, and we had nothing but bad to say about Street Monstaz in regards to how they do their business. So we got together and started Tucson Underground the magazine which premiered in Jan 2010. We released 3,000 copies just in Tucson. A lot of haters doubted us. A lot of Tucson businesses wouldnt advertise with us because they felt the magazine would never make it.

I received so many calls from artist from all over AZ asking if Tucson Underground magazine was only for Tucson artist. That same year in June 2010, I introduced AZ Underground to the state of Arizona. We through our first magazine release party in Tucson and for the 1st time in history we had Tucson and Phoenix artist coming together sharing the same stage and reppin for AZ....It was a beautiful thing. After that, we were up in Phoenix doing shows and shit, supporting our local artist. The rest is history. I welcome each and every one of yall ...to Arizona Underground Magazine. Tha streetz are talkin.

You just cant stop the grind of a hard-nosed hustler on a mission to stack chips. Whether in real estate flipping brick houses to earn his dough or bleeding the block brick by brick to make a come up, a true money maker is constantly on a paper chase to make his situation better. Such is the case for Tucson, Arizona-based bad boys AZ Hustlers. Made up of first cousins Lil V and Young Bam, these two self-made street entrepreneurs used the resources they had around them had to pull themselves out of the depths of poverty. Now, they take those same goals, principles and work ethic to the music industry and earned the respect of their peers and peek position as the newest artists signed to the legendary UGK Records. And their hard work is sure to pay off with the early 2011 release of their highly anticipated Vista/ UGK Records album Southwest Kingz, which is set to feature several fellow UGK Records artists and major label recording artists. Weve been hustling and struggling all of our lives, V admits. A lot of artist got true talent but are lazy to hustle and get it. Other artists have little or no talent but hustle harder to get it. We got both. Born and raised on the south side of Tucson, Ariz., both V and Bam lead the hard knock life. Only a short distance from Mexico, the city was a hotbed for ransom kidnappings and illegal aliens. Their
10 Arizona Underground 2012

neighborhood was plagued by drugs. So the young boys learned at an early age how to make money on the other side of the law. We were always in the streets hustling to eat whether we did it illegal or legal, explains V. To us, it was normal growing up around hustlers, dealers, users, and thugs. All the while they were knee-deep in the game, Bam had his heart set on pursuing a rap career. Everywhere he went, he kept a notebook full of raps. That was until 2001, however, when he got locked up and had to serve a five-year bid on conspiracy, weapons and drugs charges. After that happened, I was on the streets hustling by myself, V remembers. I knew while he was locked down, Bam would be crazy writing raps. So I bought a drum machine to have beats for him when he got out. Before long, V had a surplus of beats with no one to spit over them. As a result, V started writing rhymes. He formed Vista Records and the group AZ Hustlers with a few of their cousins, brothers and childhood friends. And in late 2006, they released their regionally successful independent debut album Arizona Heat. The following year, Bam was released from prison and as soon as his feet touched free ground, he dashed to the studio. A few months later, they released the muchrespected mix tape Real Recognize Trill.

When Bam got out, he started running the streets again, V confesses. He wasnt really focused on music. He was still chasing that fast money. When Bam eventually committed to the music, they began recording an album but wanted to do something dynamic. They reached out to the late Texas veteran rapper Chad Pimp C Butler to produce a track, rap a verse and sing on the hook. As fate would have it, Bam got locked up on a parole violation before they could record and had to serve an additional five months. By the time he got out, Pimp was busy promoting the newly released selftitled UGK album, a group to which he was one-half with Bernard Bun-B Freeman. But before they could get in the studio to record, the untimely passing of Pimp C on December 4, 2007 would forever impede the recording. They never got the chance to record with the legend. We heard it on the news and I didnt believe it,says V. We were shocked and in disbelief. After hearing rumors all over the news and the Internet that Pimp C had passed, they called Pimps mother, Mama Wes. They were given the shocking confirmation that indeed he had passed. Mama then asked if they would come down to attend the funeral. After a 19 - hour drive to Port Arthur, Texas from Arizona, Bam and V paid their final respects alongside thousands of friends, family and fans. The family connection was undeniable and strong ever since. Its an honor to be part of UGK Records. We grew up listening to Pimp and Bun, says V. To be signed to a label whose founder set the foundation for Southern rap, is a dream come true and a blessing. And they are sure to let the world know that dreams do come true with the early 2011 release of their Vista/ UGK Records album Southwest Kingz, which is set to feature several fellow UGK Records artists and major label recording artists. I spit it how I live. Im not trying to be the best rapper or the best producer Im a hustler, V admits. Anybody can rap or produce but if you cant hustle your raps or production what good is it gonna do you?

A Hoodstar Chef by Fernando Aguilar Jr.

Chef Armondo Duarte

Ordinarily when you think of a chef you see a guy with that funny hat on, or one of these middle aged guys showing the world their favorite pig out spots and favorite eats, you know, your typical chef. Well local celebrity Chef Armando Duarte is far from typical. This Tuc Town born and raised composer of cuisine is not only one of the nicest chefs you'll ever meet, but also a true humanitarian and a rising entrepreneur. A graduate of Pueblo High School, Armando always had a passion for cooking. As a child he always found himself helping his mother and grandmother in the kitchen while they were preparing family dinners. After High School Armando wanted to further his education and knowledge in the kitchen so he moved to Phoenix to attend the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts in Scottsdale Arizona. It was there that Armando learned to expand his techniques far beyond that of

just cooking simple Mexican Food.

While in culinary school Armando landed a part time job as the personal chef for the Alpha E Pi fraternity house at Arizona State University, though he says he was always representing our U of A Wildcats. There he developed a skill for cooking on a larger scale which in turn moved him to begin his own catering company known as Flavor City Catering that he would operate on the weekends, catering events such as weddings, birthdays, and quinceaneras. After graduating in from culinary school in 2004, Armando returned to Tucson and landed a job at the Alpha E Pi house at the U of A then moved to the sorority house of Pi Beta Phi where he remained for 5 years. But Armando was ready to take his career to the next level. He loved being a personal chef but his dream has always been to open up his own restaurant. Last year that dream came true...sort of. Armando was offered a position as the owner of a small cafe located inside the Cadillac dealership at the Auto Mall, a joint venture with the Royal Automotive Group. Thus, the Royal Cafe and Royal Catering were born and still going strong. There Armando has put together a menu and daily specials that have been a huge buzz all around the Auto Mall and beyond. Nowadays he is always concocting dishes to boast about, varying from Mexican to American to Asian and then some. But as I mentioned before this culinary genius is more than just your average chef. Armando has many other passions as well as food. He is currently in the process of resurrecting his Hoodstar Clothing line and is Co Owner of the music label Latenite Muzik. He has also been extremely active in the lowriding community and a member of Groupe Car Club for over 10 years. He along with his fellow Groupe members are constantly sponsoring and hosting events that raise awareness to many causes such as Don Vida, the Donate Life Foundation, and Miracle on 31st, a local charity that has been around 40 plus years which helps underprivileged kids get presents on Christmas day, which Armando is in his 6th year as Vice President.
14 Arizona Underground 2012

As word on the street has spread about this chef that helps cook up smiles as well as food, he has caught the attention of a few of the local news shows which Armando has made several appearances, showcasing some of his finest dishes on KOLD 13s Cooking at Dawn and KGUN 9s Morning Blend. Armando says his ultimate goal besides owning his own restaurant would be to have his own cooking show on a major network and follow the footsteps of many of his idols such as Bobby Flay and Anthony Bourdain. It would seem that no matter what ingredients life places before him, Chef Armando Duarte will whip up something decadent and worth watching, reading about, or tasting. Just 31 years old and happily married to his High School sweetheart Rainie who is a beautiful singer by the way, Armando looks forward to starting a family and continuing to press forward with all the responsibilities he already has on his plate. What the future holds for this Hoodstar Chef, well just have to wait and see whats on the menu. You can visit Armando at the Royal Cafe, located at 815 W. Automall Drive Tucson, Az 85705

Adrian was reciting the lyrics from a Tupac Shakur song while in the bathtub as a toddler. Every word was not clear of course, but for anyone familiar with the song, it was definitely clear what he was saying Marcia Cannal-Jarvis, Mother Adrian began writing his own rap songs at the age of 9 years old influenced by artists such as Tupac Shakur, Kris Kross, MC Hammer, Black Rob, and many others. "Most of my songs were about killin' n*ggas. It took me a few years to accept myself for who I was and not try and be what I thought listeners wanted me to be. I still value those old writing though, they gave me the foundation for my signature rhyme scheme." Adrian attempted to keep his music a secret from his parents. Moms and Pops never approved of me writing rap songs, still dont to this very day, especially Pops.. He warned me that this type of industry is filled with literal and figurative back-stabbing and corruption.. He also warned me of probably the most truthful statement which affects the game today: It isnt what you know (how talented you are), its all about WHO you know. He told me flat out he will NEVER approve of what Im doing. I told him thats cool, the only approval I need is my own. Adrian Jarvis Adrians parents did everything they could to try to persuade Adrian to dedicate his time and effort elsewhere. In an attempt to provide a better future for him, Adrians parents sent him to a very prestigious private school from 6th to 12th grade. People called me an oreo, white washed, all kinds of sh*t, Adrian explains. Most of my boys going to public schools didnt wanna kick it with me, make music, nothing, all because of the school I went to. I lost a lot of people I thought were friends due to where I got my education. When I would go back to the hoods where I was accepted just the summer before, my peers would ask me things like What you doin here, rich boy? What they dont know is my parents did not pay the $16,000 per year tuition for me to attend that school. My dad was the security guard, so I got in for free. Had my dad not been working for the school, I would have been at a public school just like everyone else. Adrians father, Parrish, had hoped that Adrian would take advantage of the education opportunities before him and go on to college and work a successful profession. In effect, attending such a school only helped Adrian become a better rapper. I f*ckin HATED that school, Adrian recalls. Everything from those spoiled ass rich kids who never faced a real problem in their lives, to the teachers and faculty who were completely clueless to who I was as a person, why I acted the way I did, and what it was like to be in my position. I cant say it wasnt worth it though. Going to that school expanded my vocabulary beyond levels of my own imagination. The intense writing and reading classes gave me a greater ability to piece words together, and the vocab I learned enabled me to substitute words that didnt flow right in a song with other words which mean the same thing using less or more syllables People who know where I went to school and who know me and my story have openly expressed that I have no business in the rap game. I respond that there are enough gangsta rappers, and trap rappers, and pimps in this game. Its time for something else, something new and different. I dont care Im not a thug, I dont see anywhere any rule book to lyricism that states any time of criteria an artist must meet. I do this because I love to, no other reason. And I will continue to make music until I die or go diamond, period.

Knowl-edge [nol-ij] Familiarity or conversance, as with a particular subject or branch of learning. I am Frank "Nolij" Munoz, web designer, graphic designer, tech, artist, and so much more. As an artist and designer it is important that I let my creativity run wild and apply my design and logic to as many fields as I can. Whether it is designing a layout, manipulating a photo, or painting a child's vehicle, I take pride in my work and add a touch of myself so everyone knows it was my work when they see it. This is not just some job, or a hobby, this is an obsession with art and design, an obsession with the beauty of colors and what they are capable of. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, growing up was not easy in such an area. As the years gone by I knew I had to doing something special with my life. Through experimentation drawing became my way of life. As my art progressed I tried to find new ways of creating art. Throughout high school I got involved with graphic art and painting. I got into the form of graffiti art. But instead of doing it illegally I found ways to express it without ever having to paint on someone else property. This is where more of my digital creativity comes in play.

I have been doing graphic design for almost eight years and three of those years on a more professional level. I do not stick to one particular style but a variety of styles and techniques to make me unique. Lately I have been focusing on more complex photo manipulation and design. As my portfolio grew bigger I had the idea of getting my own website in hope of sharing my talent with the world. I took an interest in building websites a few years ago. This new interest stemmed from my passion of fixing computers and learning their ins and outs at an early age. The last year and a half I have taken my interest in web design more serious and every moment I code I learn something new. Currently I run and edit my own website. I teamed up with a few professionals in audio, video, photography, web design, and graphic design. I look forward to working and collaborating with very creative people in the Chicago area and even around the world to give you the best product we can.
