Second Year Theory of Metal Cutting Assignment 5

5. Tool wear and tool life

1. Follow the experiment conducted in the workshop and record the results in the following table Depth of cut = mm Feed = ... mm/rev

Raw material

Cutting speed

Machining time, t (min)

Flank Wear, Vb (mm)

2. In a machining operation the cutting speed was 30 m/min and the tool lasted for

5 minutes before a replacement was needed. When cutting speed was increased to 90 m/min, the lasted for only 40 seconds. Determine the tool life equation parameters graphically. Then, calculate them and compare results. 3. In a machining operation the cutting speed was 10 m/min and the tool lasted for 6 minutes before a replacement was needed. When cutting speed was increased to 40 m/min, the lasted for only minute. Calculate the tool life equation parameters. Determine the parameters graphically and compare results. 4. In a turning operation that reduces the diameter of a disc like work parts from 318.35 to 300 mm, while the spindle speed is set to 60 RPM the tool life was measured to be 10 minutes. When the cutting speed was set to 300 m/min, the tool life was measured to be 1 minutes. Plot the tool life curve of the tool. Then, determine (using graph) the constants C and n. Also calculate tool life at a cutting speed of 100 m/min.
