Chariots of Fire Can you recall the theme music from Chariots of Fire being used at this years Olympics and Paralympics? The film included the story of Eric Liddell. He was a committed Christian who refused to race on a Sunday and consequently withdrew from the 100 metres, his best event, at the 1924 Paris Olympics. He was also entered for the 400 metres, a race for which he had not trained and which he was not expected to win. However, he not only won it but broke the world record. During the race he had carried a piece of paper containing words God spoke to Eli: "Those who honour me I will honour." 1 Samuel 2:30. This month we mark Remembrance Sunday and whilst Eric Liddell's gold medal win in 1924 is well known some people may not know that he died as a prisoner of war in a Japanese prison camp in 1945. Eric was born in China to Scottish missionary parents, and studied pure science at Edinburgh University. There he was known as the Flying Scotsman because he excelled in athletics and played rugby for the Scottish national team. He was also well known as a preacher and spent much time with young people teaching them how to follow Jesus Christ and live the Christian life-style. Returning to China in 1925, he worked tirelessly for the poor and for the education of children. In 1941 he was interned at Weifang by the Japanese and became a leader at the camp where even fellow missionaries had become discouraged and selfish. In spite of much suffering he helped the elderly, taught Bible classes and arranged games and science lessons for the children, who referred to him as Uncle Eric. After the War American Langdon Gilkey wrote:He was

overflowing with good humour and love for life, and with enthusiasm and charm. It is rare indeed that a person has the good fortune to meet a saint, but he came as close to it as anyone I have ever known. The prisoner-of-war camp at Weifang is now a place of

learning for Chinese teenagers. Because he was born in China, some people regard him as the first Chinese Olympic gold medallist. "It is not a joke," said Wang Hao, Weifang's director of foreign affairs. "We are very proud of Mr Eric Liddell. He is a hero".

Editorial
As well as marking Guy Fawkes Night with fireworks parties this month we also remember those who fell in two World Wars and in more recent conflicts. (My great uncle William Griffiths died on HMS Neptune on 19th December 1941). There are details of all the Remembrance Day services and also a very interesting feature article by Rhydian Vaughan on the history of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Of course, we are also well on the way to Christmas and we have information on a number of pre-Christmas events, such as the Toy Service on 25th November (p. 5) and midweek Advent services (p. 13). There are some other interesting events, such as the Womens and Mens Breakfasts (p. 37), the Loddon Players new production (p. 45), the Hook Choral Societys anniversary concert (p.44) and Basingstoke Choral Societys concert (p. 49). Many thanks to all who have sent in contributions via our envelope scheme - if you havent sent yours in yet theres still time to do so. Link distributors - remember the thank you tea party on 14 November! As ever, bouquets, brickbats and other comments on the magazine to:editor@loddonvalleylink.hampshire.org.uk.

ANNUAL TOY SERVICE 10.00am Sunday 25th November St Leonards Church

Each year we invite you to donate new (as good as new) toys, games, clothes or Christmas gifts for young people aged from 0 to 16 years. All the gifts we receive are given to local children who would otherwise not receive presents at Christmas. If donating used toys they must be in as new condition. Because of health and safety legislation each toy now has to be checked and for this reason we have been asked to leave gifts unwrapped but you are welcome to donate wrapping with your gift. If you have large items that you would like collected or toys to pass on, but are unable to attend the service, please let me know and I will arrange for collection. Prayer and Reflection

Text for the month Psalm 23 vv. 4, 6
4

Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me
6

Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.. The NIV Bible Prayer for the Month Loving God, in this month of remembrance we realise the horror of war and we pay tribute to those who have died that we might live in freedom. We are reminded how easy it is to speak of peace and how difficult it is to pursue it. It sounds straightforward to talk of breaking down barriers but it is so stressful to live as peacemakers. You teach us to live to heal wounds rather than create them that we might unite rather than divide, reconcile rather than separate. Rescue us from all that keeps us apart, give us a new spirit of love and openness, acceptance and understanding. May the peace we pray for begin here and now in our hearts, and may we be instruments of your peace working for harmony in our lives and between nations. In Jesus name we pray. Amen Prayer Points for November Pray for our soldiers striving to bring peace to Afghanistan and for their families living with daily uncertainties and anxieties Pray for an ending to the conflict in Syria and a lasting peace. Pray for leaders to take forward the peace processes in these countries. Pray for those for whom this month brings back sad memories Pray for all who speak at and attend the Mens and Womens Breakfasts this month, that they may share fellowship and understanding of your purpose in their lives.

Five years on .... happy birthday Bramley WI Lite!

Bramley WI Lite recently celebrated its fifth birthday with a champagne theme. John from Laurent-Perrier gave a talk on the history of Laurent-Perrier, the Champagne region, grape growing and the production and bottling process. Following the talk, over 40 local ladies enjoyed a tasting of four very different Laurent-Perrier champagnes: Ultra Brut, Brut, Vintage 2002, and Cuve Ros. At the end of the evening a toast was raised to the group and a cake decorated with a champagne bottle was cut. All guests received a champagne themed goody bag. Bramley WI Lite was established in 2007 and is part of the National Federation of WIs. The group took the best bits of the traditional WI and gave them a modern twist. Its WI but a lighter version. There are now nearly 40 members, who meet once a month. Report by Gill Fearon NWRs last meeting of the year was a book review evening. It is interesting to hear about which books members have read and enjoyed, and can therefore recommend. We may then be inspired to read something different. Two completely different books gave us a flavour of the history of the Orient. One was Sea of Poppies by Amitav Ghosh which starts in India in the 1830s, against the background of the opium trade between the East India Company and China. It describes how a variety of people meet on a ship, and the events which occurred during their voyage. The other was Gweilo by Martin Booth, an autobiography describing his childhood in Hong Kong in the 1950s. The book is highly evocative, giving a snapshot of old Hong Kong through his eyes as a child, his adventures and the relationship he had with his parents, much of which is very amusing. Family tragedies featured as a genre not to everyones taste, but can give an insight into the suffering of others. Journey to the Heart by Melody Beattie is the daily meditations of the author when she took a year off to travel round the USA after the death of her young son. Not morbid or depressing, the book has given solace to others. Mercy by Jodi Picoult is set in a small town in New Hampshire. A man kills his terminally ill wife; should he be charged with her murder? The story is interwoven with Scottish history. There were several historical books. Shackletons Boat Journey by F.A. Worsley was chosen for its beautifully written account of the famous expedition to the Antarctic on the Endurance which became crushed by ice and resulted in an amazing journey for the crew as they battled for survival. That Woman by Anne Sebba is a biography of Wallis Simpson who was once the most reviled figure in Britain. It is an interesting account of her early life, her previous marriages and the life she led in exile with David (King Edward VIII), who abdicated in favour of his younger brother George VI in order to marry her. Singled Out by Virginia Nicholson is the story of the thousands of women left unmarried after the First World War, the lives they led and their occupations. These were just a selection of the books we discussed. The next meeting is a music evening.

A view from the Borough Council Councillor Ranil Jayawardena

E: ranil@nehc.org.uk | T: 01256 322207 | W: tellRanil.com | @CllrRanil

In the last month the Council has been focusing on moving the planning process forward. As I said last month, there is a debate over the number of houses to be built across the Borough up to 2029. The lower the number across the Borough, the fewer the houses to be built in each community. It is important to have a sound plan in place otherwise developers will have free reign. The SHLAA (see October Link) will begin a debate about where housing should go I want to see the lowest number possible in our villages. However, do let me know your thoughts. As Deputy Leader of the Council, with specific responsibility for the Councils long-term strategy, I was delighted with the announcement made by Local Government Secretary, Eric Pickles MP, to provide funding to help local authorities in England freeze council tax for a third consecutive year. The administration of which I am part had already driven through further efficiency savings locally to continue the freeze on council tax in the year ahead. Of course, this all relies on proper financial management of the Council, which allows us to invest for the long term. For instance we are now able to help first time buyers on to the housing ladder locally, in market homes rather than affordable homes. Eric Pickles also announced new powers for councils to issue Temporary Stop Notices which will stop unauthorised traveller developments in their tracks. These new powers will be a help in preventing illegal encampments but I am also asking for a local review of police powers to tackle trespass on land under existing legislation, and for a new Borough-wide byelaw to be considered. More detailed updates on these and other matters on my website (www.tellRanil.com) and, if I can help in any way, please do not hesitate to contact me.

The Unknown Warrior

Every November, at the mourning of the year, I place a cross in the Field of Remembrance outside Westminster Abbey in honour of my Great Uncle, who was killed at Gallipoli. I then take the opportunity to visit the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey, a salutary experience. I would wish to share with you the events that culminated in this expression of collective grief. The idea was conceived by the Reverend David Railton MC, an Army chaplain, who in 1916 saw a grave marked with a rough cross and the pencil inscription An Unknown British Soldier of the Black Watch. In 1920 he proposed to the Dean of Westminster that an unidentified British Soldier, buried in the battlefields of France, should be reburied in Westminster Abbey to represent the many hundreds of thousands of Empire dead from the Great War. The idea found support from the Dean and the Prime Minister, David Lloyd George. And so four suitable sets of remains were exhumed from the French Battlefields - the Aisne, Somme, Arras and Ypres and brought to the chapel at Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise near Arras on the night of 7th November 1920. Brigadier General Wyatt (commander of British troops in France and Flanders) and Colonel Gell (from the Directorate of Graves) went into the Chapel alone. The remains were on stretchers covered with Union Jacks. General Wyatt, with closed eyes, selected one of the of the bodies by resting his hand on it. The anonymity of the chosen body was assured. It was placed in a sealed coffin, and the other bodies were reburied with full honours. The next day the dead soldier began his journey to Westminster Abbey. The coffin was taken to Boulogne and placed inside a casket,

Page 28

which had been made of oak timber from Hampton Court and had the inscription A British Warrior who fell in the Great War 1914-1918 for King and Country. Surmounting this casket was a sixteenth century sword, given by King George V. The destroyer HMS Verdun, escorted by six other destroyers, carried the body to Dover, landing on the 10th November. The casket was then transferred to a train which carried it to Victoria Station, where it arrived at platform 8 at 8:32 pm that evening. It remained there overnight (a plaque at the station marks the site) On the morning of 11th November 1920, the casket was drawn by the Royal Horse Artillery to the Cenotaph (Greek for empty tomb). This new war memorial in Whitehall had been designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens and was unveiled by the King-Emperor George V following the arrival of the cortge, which then continued to Westminster Abbey. The casket was borne into the west nave flanked by a guard of honour of one hundred recipients of the Victoria Cross. The guests of honour were some one hundred women, who had lost their husbands and all of their sons in the war. The casket was then interred a few feet from the entrance of the western end of the nave. Servicemen from the armed forces stood guard as an estimated 1,250,000 filed silently past in just the first week. The ceremony seems to have served as a catharsis of collective mourning unknown on any previous scale. The grave was then capped with a black marble stone from Belgium, with lettering was made from melted down brass cartridge cases from the war. If you get the chance, do visit this tomb. Ask the gatekeepers if you can briefly stand at the grave; they are generally most obliging.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE SHERFIELD COMMUNITY CARE GROUP

Many villagers appreciate the invaluable emergency help given by this group to solve a problem, especially lifts to medical appointments. Several volunteers are already either over eighty or approaching it. Thus more are needed, especially drivers. Duties are light (around one a month on average). A CRB check is essential but there is no cost involved in obtaining it. Please note however that volunteers receive no payment for expenses. If you are able to help please contact Doreen Tosswill on 01256 882344.

However, it will now be at Stratfield Saye from 10.15am to 10.45am (previously 10.40am to 11.10am) and at Sherfield from 11.45am to 12.15pm (previously 12.10am to 12.50pm). Evergreens Club
May Wilkie The October meeting was opened by Jean Bernsten, our chairperson, who welcomed the members to our Harvest Festival service. The service was conducted by Dr. John Williams; he was accompanied on the organ by his wife Gill. Everyone enjoyed the service and a collection was taken for the church. This was followed by tea and biscuits. We then had our harvest auction of lovely donations which included fruit, vegetables, home made cake, wine, flowers and tins of food. The next meeting on November 5th will be a demonstration of Christmas garlands by Ilene Iles .

Hook Choral Society

25th Anniversary Year

Director - Nicholas Woods Rehearsals are now in the final stages for our first concert in this special anniversary year (details below). Preparations include attending a workshop in Salisbury hosted by Bob Chilcott which will reinforce our interpretation of his Requiem Mass. The music has presented the choir with a different challenge of ancient and modern in terms of text and score which we have very much enjoyed. As always, we are fortunate to be supported by top class musicians and soloists and look forward to a memorable evening. Autumn Concert Programme

Requiem by Bob Chilcott

Bob Chilcott has had lifelong involvement in choral music including 12 years singing and composing with the Kings Singers. This lovely work is a delight to listen to with a contemporary score which perfectly accommodates the traditional Latin text.

Mass in Blue by Will Todd

Will Todds ambitious and exciting setting of the Latin mass brings together real jazz themes and improvisations in concert with the Latin mass text. The piece skilfully features harmonic exchanges between the soprano and piano soloist who are supported by a strong choral foundation - a very impressive and energised interpretation.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

We have a packed schedule of speakers planned for the rest of 2012 and beyond. Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:45pm Our November talk on Monday 19th will be given by Carol Watson. Carol is a keen photographer and joined us last year to talk about the wild flowers of Western Australia. This time she will be taking us on a photographic journey looking at the Spring flowers of Italy. There will be no talk on Monday 17th December. Instead we have our Christmas party. This is always a fun event with a light hearted quiz, nibbles and possibly a glass of wine or two. For details of meetings or other information contact Linda on 882341 or Vanessa on 881760

In most cases the meter will be installed on the external stop tap which is normally found in the footpath at the boundary of the property, and there will be little disruption. In a very small number of cases (for example if you live in a block of flats or share supplies) the meter may need to be installed inside - often under the kitchen sink. If you would like further information about the metering programme, advice on water efficiency or details of financial support available, please visit www.southeastwater.co.uk or call the metering helpline on 0333 000 0003.
