Richard Stoltzman to Kick Off 2012-2013 Gold Series at the Majestic Theatre
Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA) Season to include 10 Concerts Noted clarinetist Richard Stoltzman will kick off YOSAs Gold Series season at San Antonios Majestic Theatre November 5, performing with the YOSA Philharmonic in a concert titled Stoltzmans America. The performance will feature two works from composer Leonard Bernstein, Overture to Candide and West Side Story Variants as well as the Gershwins Porgy and Bess Suite. Higdons blue cathedral and Hansons Symphony No. 2 Romantic are also being performed. Richard Stoltzman is a Grammy Award-winning musician and prolific recording artist. He has been a soloist with more than 100 orchestras and is considered a captivating recitalist and innovative jazz artist. He was the first wind player to receive the Avery Fisher Prize. He has more than sixty recordings to his name. In addition to performing with YOSAs Philharmonic, Stoltzman will teach a master class on Sunday, November 4 at 6 p.m. at the UTSA Fine Arts Department and will give a lesson and demonstration at a local high school on Monday, November 5. The Sunday master class is free and open to the public. Richard Stoltzman is a uniquely compelling performer whose energy and style have thrilled audiences around the world, said Troy Peters, YOSA music director. Few artists today have a more

fluent understanding of American music, and our musicians are especially excited about the chance to collaborate with and learn from such a master. This years Gold Series for the YOSA Philharmonic includes the Stoltzmans America concert on November 5; Brahms Reimagined on February 11; and Fate and Redemption on May 6. In addition, YOSA Philharmonic students will perform the annual Side-By-Side with the San Antonio Symphony June 2. The Philharmonic is comprised of 105 musicians from the region, many of whom recently returned from a successful summer performance tour in London. Details of the Gold Series are here. The City Series, featuring the YOSA Symphony and Sinfonietta Strings perform their Autumn Festival November 11, Winter Lights on February 4 and Festival Finale on May 19. The Junior Strings Series featuring YOSA Capriccio Strings and YOSA Prelude Strings will perform Holiday Favorites on Dec. 18, Violins and Voices on April 4 and Spring Celebration on April 30. More information on the series here. The Youth Orchestras of San Antonio is the premier orchestral experience for youth citywide, with 368 musicians in 5 orchestras. The mission of YOSA is to enhance education, enrich the community and transform lives by pursuing excellence in classical music in a stimulating, nurturing and fun environment. The organization focuses on making music education accessible to all youth. YOSA serves more than 1,500 young musicians annually. It offers no cost music tuition and orchestral experience to young students in the YOSA MS program and works in partnership with the Roosevelt Compact Schools, offering comprehensive programs in 5 schools as well as clinics to more than 75 additional schools each year.
