The Honorable City Council Member Sheffie Kadane1500 MarilllaRoom 5FSDallas, TX 75210Dear Council Member Kadane,I’d like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I’m the President Elect of thePeninsula Neighborhood Association assuming office on November 1, 2012.Prior to the next City Council meeting, I request a meeting with you to discuss some of myneighborhood’s immediate concerns – specifically the upcoming Council vote on a potential contract with Dallas United Crew.At our recent annual meeting there were two unanimous votes - one elected me into office, and the second vigorously opposed this contract and project.Council Member Kadane, my neighborhood is quite alarmed and upset about the potentialimpact this Council decision could have not only on White Rock Park and its users, butalso the precedent it will set for future commercial development at the Lake.We have significant concerns we would like to have immediately addressed.
The process employed by the White Rock Task Force appears truncated, lacking intransparency, and offering, at best, limited public comment or exposure
Our impression, supported by articles in The Advocate and public informationdisclosures, is that this contract was rapidly “pushed” through the Park Board for approval ignoring environmental and construction concerns, as well as the potentialfor a significant negative impact on the Park and its current use
In addition, we have grave concerns that approval of projects like this opens thedoor for future commercialization of locations within our neighborhood;specifically The Bath House, Dreyfuss Club, the Stone Tables, and Big Thicket
We also fear redirection of traffic into and through our neighborhood with the potential for opening East Lawther from Mockingbird to the Bath House, and fromEast Lawther to the ArboretumAgain Council Member Kadane I ask for a meeting with you prior to the upcoming Councilvote. I look forward to working with you to ensure White Rock Lake’s continued status as“the crown jewel” of the Dallas Park system.Thank you for your consideration.David ShinnPresident Elect Peninsula Neighborhood Associationcc.
