Abstract
FuturICTisacurrentproposalforanEU‐fundedbigscienceprojectwhichseekstoleveragedatafromtheinternetinordertocreatepredictivesimulationsofglobalsocialandeconomicsystems.Utilisingtheoreticalframeworksandsimulationtechniquesinformedbycomplexityscience,theprojectpromisestodevelopnewformsofgovernanceinacomplexworld.DrawingonMichelFoucault’sanalysisofbiopower,thisdissertationexamineshowandwithwhichconsequenceslifefiguresasanobjectofknowledgeandagovernabledomaininFuturICT.WhereastheknowledgeoflifewhichbothMichelFoucaultandGeorgesCanguilhemdescribeforthe19thcenturystressedthemesoforganichomeostasis,contemporarycomplexitytheoriesandthediscourseofartificiallifedescribelifeasaprocessofemergenceandself‐organisationabstractedfromitsmateriality.Itwillbearguedthatthesimulationsofemergentsocialstructures,andthetechniquesforguidingself‐organisationwhichFuturICTderivesfrombiomimeticresearch,marktheentryofaspecificcontemporaryknowledgeoflifeintothegovernmentoflivingbeings.Drawingonfeministandothercriticalanalysesoftechnoscience,theknowledge‐makingpracticeofFuturICTisexaminedasrestingonaproblematicconceptofobjectivityandenactinganaturalisationofsocialrelations.Insistinginsteadonlife’sspecificityasanobjectofknowledgemightyieldwaysforresistingtheinstrumentalisationoflifeforprojectsofdomination.
