If G-d Is Revealed,Why Can’t We see hIm?
Translated by Boruch Merkur
Since every single Jew canexperience [what is said in the verse regarding Avrohom Avinu],“And G-d appeared to him,” whydo they not actually perceive thisrevelation? To answer this question fromthree different angles:1)
It is real even if it is notexperienced:
First and foremost, not seeing something with one’sphysical eyes does not changethe reality. There is a well-knownparable of the Rebbe Rayatzabout scholars who travel ona horse drawn carriage. Thescholars speak words of wisdomas they travel while the horsesthink about the hay, etc. The factthat the only thing on the mindof the horses is hay – that istheir reality and all that exists tothem (at least at that moment) –doesn’t change the veracity of thetopic the scholars are discussing. What they are discussing is real, regardless of how abstract andirrelevant it is to the horses.2)
It is experiencedspiritually:
The concept of “although
he
does not see,his
mazal
sees [“
mazal
” beinga dimension of the soul thattranscends the body]” has manyapplications, one of which isour case. That is, a Jew’s
mazal
sees the revelation of “And G-dappeared to him.” And as a resultof the
mazal
experiencing thisrevelation, it also has an impacton that part of the soul that isinvested within the body, havinga practical effect on the person.3)
It will be experienced inthe simple, literal sense in theMessianic Era:
The principalmanifestation and revelationof “And G-d appeared to him” will take place with the true andcomplete redemption throughMoshiach Tzidkeinu. But thisshould not be seen as a remote, distant event. In fact, we havethe ability to make it happenimminently, for every positiveaction we do (especially hostingguests, as well as doing actsof kindness regarding spiritualmatters) brings the true andcomplete redemption closer, ushering in and hastening theadvent of the time when we willexperience the revelation of “AndG-d appeared to him.”
speeding up theredemption is ofparamount importance
And since this is so, there isreason to add in disseminatingTorah and Judaism and spreadingthe wellsprings outward withgreater strength and greaterforce, with greater alacrity anda greater sense of urgency, etc.,in order to hasten the true andcomplete redemption. Indeed, speeding up the redemptioneven a single moment is of paramount importance, because we are speaking about theredemption of all the Jewishpeople of all generations, as wellas the redemption of the DivinePresence Itself.“And so may it be for us,”that immediately we merit therevelation of “And G-d appearedto him,” with our physical senseof sight. There is a historicalprecedent for such a powerfulrevelation taking place in thephysical word, as discussed in
Tanya
(Ch. 36, 46a), “somethingof this revelation has already been experienced on earth, atthe time of the Giving of theTorah,” including a revelationthat spanned the globe (in all127 nations upon which Ester was queen – Ester being thedescendant of Sara Imeinu, wholived 127 years), as has beenstated, “King of all the land.”May we immediatelyexperience this revelation with the advent of MoshiachTzidkeinu. May he come atonce and redeem us and takeus upright to our land, the HolyLand, to Yerushalayim the HolyCity, to the Holy Mountain – “onthe mountain, G-d will be seen”(22:14) – immediately!
