Are you over 50? Enthusiastic residents, ages 50 to 65, needed for two focus groups to explore recreational programming for active adults. The focus groups will take place Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Each focus group will include eight to ten active adult participants, ages 50 to 65, selected for an hour-long discussion. If you are selected to participate in the focus group, you will be invited to discuss your ideas and opinions. Refreshments will be served. As a thank you for your participation, focus group members will receive a free 6-month Recreation Center fitness room membership. To find out what works best for the boomers, the Recreation Department is hosting a community discussion, Active AdultsAges 50+. Staff and programmers will gather information through two focus groups, then explore participants suggestions for programming aimed at adults ages 55 to 65.

Deborah Zuckerman will give a presentation of what financial exploitation is as it relates to the senior citizen community common types of exploitation; how to detect it; types of exploiters; warning signs/red flags: relevant state laws; prevention strategies; and what to do if you find you have been a victim. Ms. Zuckerman is the Program Manager of the Financial Exploitation Prevention Initiative for the Montgomery County States Attorneys Office. Please join us for this presentation and the general meeting concerning services for seniors in Takoma Park. Light breakfast refreshments will be served.

Sue, June, Caroline, Trudy, and Anna are happy to show their latch-hook pillow and wall-hanging projects in various stages of completion. Everyone had a great time learning how to create their own designs and patterns. Per your requests, June Gable will be offering a learning to knit class and a crochet class for beginner students early next year. Bone Builders consists of three parts: balance exercises, weight training and discussion concerning diet, safety and exercise. This program, in partnership with Montgomery County, uses trained RSVP volunteers supervised by a certified trainer. Registration is required. Dance Studio. Free.

Barbara Brown instructs this line dancing class and demonstrates how exercise can be fun with music. No experience necessary so come and enjoy the activity. Registration is required. Dance Studio. Free.

Gentle Tai Chi New Beginners ClassLevel 1

Kirk Talbott will introduce you to the ancient Chinese internal martial art of tai-chi chuan, a gentle moving meditation that improves health and restores balance and calm. The class will emphasize relaxation, posture, and breathing through the slow, integrated exercise of the traditional Yang-style short form. This class is for beginning students. Dance Studio. Carol Mermey, RYT, will introduce you to the ways yoga can help you increase flexibility, strength, and balance, using a series of seated and standing poses. Introduction to Conversational English


Session II: Tuesdays/Thursdays Begins October 30 thru December 13 1:00 -2:30 p.m.
This is a six-week class that will meet two times per week. The 12 classes are designed to provide students with an introduction to conversational English for senior citizens whose first language is not English. Each class will focus on listening, understanding, speaking and pronunciation through the study of familiar, everyday events and situations in English. Class size: Min. 6/Max 12. How to register for trips beginning Thursday, November 1 (phone opens at 8:45 a.m.)
1. To begin the registration process, please call 301-891-7280 to include your name on a pre-registration list.
Note: This list will hold the participants place in line for 3 days to one week, depending on when the trip is scheduled in the month. Registration for the current months trip (s) will usually begin on the first business day of the month. To insure proper processing, it is best to speak directly with a Recreation Department staff person. Do not leave a recorded message.

2. A Takoma Park Recreation Department registration form is required for each trip.
Note: This form must be received by the end of the pre-registration period, or the participant will be removed from the list, and the space will become available.

3. Please register in-person, or mail the registration form to: Takoma Park Recreation Department, 7500 Maple Avenue, Takoma Park, Maryland 20912.

The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception is the Patronal Catholic Church of the United States renowned for its beautiful sacred art, but also for its unique architecture. Join us for a free docent led, one-hour, guided tour through the Basilicas major works of art, history, and other highlights as you traverse the massive expanse of the Great Upper Church and Crypt Level. We will have lunch on-site in the Basilicas cafeteria. Bring spending money for lunch. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Election Day - November 6 Transportation by Recreation Bus


November 6 is election day. Bus service will be provided for seniors, from Victory Tower and Franklin Apartments senior housing buildings, to the polling locations between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM. Look for the schedule flyers that will be distributed to the buildings. Flyers will also be available in the Senior Room at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue.
