EXT. THE OCEAN - DAY
11CLOSE ON a beautiful 40-YEAR-OLD WOMAN at the helm of apowerful SPEEDBOAT -- her hair tossed back by the wind, her mouth in a euphoric grin.FADE OUT.
CREDITS -- ARCHIVAL FOOTAGE
22MATT (V.O.)My missionary ancestors came to theislands and told the Hawaiians to puton clothes, work hard, believe inChrist, and stop surfing and huladancing. They made business dealsalong the way -- buying an island, or marrying a princess and inheriting herland. Now their descendants wearbikinis and running shorts, play beachvolleyball and surf, and take up huladancing. Hawai’i has always been aplace of contradiction.
EXT. HONOLULU - DAY
33VARIOUS SHOTS of Honolulu begin a pattern of montages to beinterspersed throughout the film.MATT (V.O.)My friends on the mainland think justbecause I live in Hawai'i, I live inparadise. Like a permanent vacation -- we’re all just out here drinking mai-tais, shaking our hips, and catching waves. Are they nuts? How can theypossibly think our families are lessscrewed up, our heart attacks andcancers less fatal, our grief lessdevastating? Hell, I haven’t been on asurfboard in fifteen years.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY
44We ZOOM BACK from a panorama of Honolulu to find 50-year-oldMATT KING seated amid DOCUMENTS atop a makeshift desk -- hehas brought his work with him.

MATT (V.O.)For the last 23 days, I’ve been livingin a “paradise” of IVs and urine bagsand endotracheal tubes and six-month-old US magazines. Paradise. Paradisecan go fuck itself.Matt looks up at the WOMAN we saw in the speedboat, now lyingstiffly on an upright HOSPITAL BED, her head cocked to oneside, a feeding tube in her nose, a ventilator in hertrachea, IVs in her arm.MATT (V.O.) (CONT’D)This is Elizabeth King, my wife.Twenty-three days ago she was launchedfrom a powerboat during a race and hither head, almost drowned. Now she’s ina coma that scores 5 on the Glasgowscale and 3 on the Rancho Los Amigosscale, scores showing an extremelysevere coma. Liz is very competitive.Whatever she does, she does to thefullest.
INT. NEUROLOGIST’S OFFICE - DAY
55Matt is getting the current DIAGNOSIS.NEUROLOGISTShe reacts non-purposefully to stimuliin a non-specific manner, butoccasionally her responses arespecific, though inconsistent. Herreflexes are primitive and often thesame, regardless of stimulipresented...MATT (V.O.)It was exactly what Elizabeth used toaccuse me of.
INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - DAY
66Matt continues to observe her.MATT (V.O.)Twenty-three days in a coma, and anyday now the doctors will give me theirfinal verdict if she’s going to comeout of it or not. Then I have adecision to make. Wait, that’s wrong.Liz has a living will.
