Issue 117 2012Throughout the years that I’vebeen covering sailing, inevitablythe subject of the sports futurecomes up. Particularly when itcomes to competitive sailing, advocates wonder aloud as towhy the sport struggles for mediaattention and how can youngerpeople be exposed and turned onto this exciting sport.Certainly the America’s Cup,now in 72-foot catamaranspowered by hard wings, is a stepin the right direction. They’reincredibly powerful and as sexy-looking as anything that’s everappeared on a body of water.
Hulls ying at velocities reaching
two times the wind speed issomething many a young sailorcan look at lustfully. But what about on the locallevel? How can this same allurebe translated to the youth whoindicates an interest in thisinternational sport? What canclub sailing programs do ornot do to engage the young? As a professional who hasphotographed the sport for thepast 10-years I believe I have abit of insight. The truth is, in this modernworld, marketing and image is amajor part of nearly everythingwe do and this is somethingwe have to bear in mind as wedisplay the sport to the rest of theworld. Pat, what are you saying? You have a jewel of knowledgethat you’re suppressing.Okay here’s the problem – it’sthe A crack. What? Yes – havingtaken thousands of sailingphotographs it’s hard not to getimages of burly dudes bent overon foredeck with their A crackglistening in the sun. How canwe propel a sport forward whenexposed underwear and plumberbutts are ruining 50% of theprofessional photographer’simages?I plea to the amateur racershere in Marina del Rey andeverywhere – pull your pantsup, get a belt, get some strongerelastic shorts, do whatever youhave to do – the future of anentire sport is counting on you –it’s resting in your, uh, your...thesport is in your…Well, it seemsthe future of the sport is in yourcrack, please pull your pants up.Thank you…
