Thisbookdescribesthestructureof 
theclassicalgroup
,meaninggeneral lineargroups,symplecticgroups,andorthogonalgroups,bothovergeneral eldsandinnerdetailoverp-adicelds.Tothisend,halfofthetext isasystematicdevelopmentofthetheoryofbuildingsandBN-pairs,botsphericalandane,whiletheotherhalfisillustrationbyandapplicationttheclassicalgroupsTheviewpointisthatbuildingsarethefundamentalobjects,usedtostudy groupswhichactuponthem.Thus,tostudyagroup,onediscoversorcon- structsabuildingnaturallyassociatedtoit,onwhichthegroupactsnicely. Thisdiscussionisintendedtobeintelligibleaftercompletionofabasigraduatecourseinalgebra,sothereareaccountsofthenecessaryfactsabout geometricalgebra,reectiongroups,p-adicnumbers(andotherdiscretevaluationrings),andsimplicialcomplexesandtheirgeometricrealizationsItisworthnotingthatitisthe

aspect,notthe 
algebraigroup 
aspect,whichdeterminesthenatureofthebasi

ofp-adicreductivegroups. Oneimportantsourceofinformationforthisandrelatedmaterialisthe monumentaltreatiseofBruhat-Tits,whichappearedinseveralparts,widelseparatedintime.Thistreatiseconcernedmostlyapplicationofthetheoryof anebuildingstop-adicgroupsofthetheoryofanebuildings.Oneofthe basicpointsmade,andanideapervasiveinthework,isthatbuildingscanbe attachedinanintrinsicmannertoallp-adicreductivegroups.Butthispoint isdiculttoappreciate,makingthissourcenotcongenialtobeginners,pre- sumingasitdoesthatthereaderknowsagreatdealaboutalgebraicgroupsandhasarmgraspofrootsystemsandreectiongroups,havingpresumablworkedalltheexercisesinBourbaki'sLietheorychaptersIV,V,VIIncontrast,itisthisauthor'sopinionthat,ratherthanbeingcorollaries ofthetheoryofalgebraicgroups,
