What is a run-on sentence?

A run-on sentence means two sentences (independent clauses) are joined incorrectly.

There are two kinds of run-ons!


1. Fused Sentence: Occurs when two sentences are incorrectly joined without punctuation. Example: The economy has improved many people still do not have jobs.

There are two kinds of run-ons!


2. Comma Splice: Occurs when two sentences are incorrectly joined with just a comma. Example: The economy has improved, many people still do not have jobs.

1. Use a period to create 2 separate sentences. Example: The economy has improved. Many people still do not have jobs.

METHOD 1: CORRECT USING A PERIOD:

METHOD 2: CORRECT USING A COORDINATING CONJUNCTION The automaker paid a fee Will Smith drove an Audi in I, Robot.

The automaker paid a fee, and Will Smith drove an Audi in I, Robot.

METHOD 3: CORRECT USING A SEMICOLON Caffeine is the primary ingredient in most energy drinks this chemical stimulates the central nervous system and increases alertness.

METHOD 4: CORRECT USING A SEMICOLON AND TRANSITIONAL WORD OR PHRASE *there is a list of these words on page 277 of Foundations First
