Increasing Your Quantity Time
By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries
“In today’s structured world, just hangingout is gold. Ask children what they want, andthey will tell you they want to just hang outwith their parents.”These words from Terry Real, a marriage andfamily therapist and author, tell us a lot aboutour relationships with others—and with God.In his January 19th article, of the
 HuffingtonPost
, Real contends that : “Quality time” is noth-ing more than a self-serving yuppie rationalization for not beingthere for your kids. The fairy tale of “quality time” is that youcan make up for the time you don’t have to be a good mom or dadby scheduling short doses of time intentionally focused on yourkid. The entire idea is a fallacy.”He goes on to say that real parenting interaction occurs inthe midst of the normal daily routine of activity. Real contendsthat, “Kids, if you let them, will pull you into their slower, morenourishing kid-time.This noted counselor also advises, “You have to yield to theirworld which is simpler, less stimulating and slower and open upto the subtle richness of it. The reward is that when you enter intothat relationship with your kids it’s so much fun and so nourish-ing for you.”This is outstanding parenting advice! It is also wonderfulspiritual counsel!God clearly expresses His desire to spend quantity time withus. In the first letter to the church in Thessalonica we are ex-horted to “pray without ceasing.” Godsays a way to deepen your relationshipwith Him is to be in continualconversation with Him.As we indicated last week, Godcommunicates to us through theBible. This is a tremendous re-source to help you understand whoGod is. To continue to grow in your relationship with Him, youmust spend time with Him.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism
provides some help in understanding the reason for this. It tells usthat our chief aim is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.A great way to do this—in conjunction with others—isto take part in our Wednesday night prayer community. Thisgroup gathers 6:30–8
:00,
in room 1244 for a rich time of prayerand mutual encouragement.Another way to deepen your relationship with God is byspending the next 30 days praying for specific needs of FirstFederated Church. A 30-Day Prayer Guide will be handed outduring the worship service Sunday morning. We’ll also havecopies available in the display racks at each of the main entrancesnext week.God invites you to develop the practice of “in everythingby prayer and petition withthanksgiving lettingyour requests be madeknown to God.” Asyou do this, Godwill pull you intowhat relationalexpert Terry Realcould refer toas “His slower, more nourishingGod-time.”
