David P. Reed & Harriet F.E.

Tarwater Family
David Pace Reed was born on August 8, 18381 in Morgan County, Ohio2. He was the only child of Joseph Reed and Mary Pace. Davids mother died when he was young, probably before 1850. David and Joseph can be found in the 1850 Census of Deerfield Township, Morgan County, Ohio living with Margaret Reed, age 75, and Margaret Laughlin, age 18 3. More research is needed to determine their relationship to these women. Sometime between 1850 and 1856 both David and Joseph moved from Ohio to Putnam County, Missouri. On April 1, 1856, Joseph purchased 40 acres of land about one mile northwest of the current location of Powersville, Missouri4, and on April 15, 1856, David purchased 80 acres of land adjacent to his fathers property5.

This map shows the location of the D.P. & Joseph Reed Farms relative to the current location of Powersville, Missouri. The D.P Reed farmland is shaded light blue and the Joseph Reed farmland is shaded light green. The location of the houses, the church & cemetery and the city are also labeled. None of Josephs farmhouse, Davids farmhouse or the M.E. Church still stand.

David married Harriet Francis Elizabeth Tarwater on January 24, 18572 or 18586. The place of their marriage is unknown. No marriage record was found in Daviess County, Missouri where Harriet lived or in Putnam County where David lived. More research needs to be done to find the marriage location. Harriet was born on September 18, 1839 in Ray County, Missouri6. She was one of twelve children of Lewis Tarwater and Martha Ann McHaney. She grew up in Daviess County, Missouri near the town of Gallatin. She can be found living with her father and mother in the

1840 Census of Gallatin, Daviess County, Missouri7 as one of the females under age 5, and also in the 1850 Census of District 27 of Daviess County, Missouri8 living with her parents. David and Harriet made their home on the property David purchased in 1856. David and Harriet can be found in the 18609, 187010, 188011 and 190012 U.S. Federal Censuses living on this farm in York Township, Putnam County, Missouri. The home was a one-room log cabin with a loft where their four daughters and six sons were born. The family lived off of the land. They raised sheep from which they shore wool, hand-spun it, and knit their clothing. They also raised pigs, and bartered with the meat for anything they couldnt produce on the farm. In 1887, the Milwaukee railroad came through about a half mile east of the familys home, and the town of Powersville was founded. David bartered with the superintendent of schools in Powersville, trading him a barrel of molasses in lieu of the $2 tuition so that his sons could go to school. Four of his six sons continued their education, eventually becoming doctors. The family was Methodist, attending church at the Methodist Episcopal Church that was less than a quarter mile south of their property. The church stood on the ground where the Powersville Cemetery is today. Harriets brother William Andrew Tarwater was a Methodist Episcopal Minister, and one of their sons, D.W. Reed was a Free Methodist preacher for several years. David died on May 31, 19031 in Mercer, Mercer County, Missouri2 probably at the home of his son, Dr. David William Reed. Harriet lived several years after his death. She can be found in the 1910 Census living in Gravity, Taylor County, Iowa13 near her son, Dr. Lloyd Thomas Reed. She died on February 4, 1912 at her son D.W. Reeds home in Shenandoah, Page County, Iowa6. David and Harriet are buried in the Powersville Cemetery located a half mile west of Powersville, Missouri1.
