Q1
a) Reinforced concrete can be defined as a composite materials consisting of concreteand reinforcement bars. Briefly explain the composite action between both of thematerials.(3 marks)
Answer:

The tensile strength of concrete is only about 10 per cent of the compressivestrength. Because of this, nearly all reinforced concrete structures are designedon the assumption that the concrete does not resist any tensile forces it justresist the compression force only.(1 mark)

Reinforcement is designed to carry these tensile forces, which are transferredby bond between the interfaces of the two materials.(1 mark)

If this bond is not adequate, the reinforcing bars will just slip with in theconcrete and there will not be a composite action. Thus members should bedetailed so that the concrete can be well compacted around the reinforcementduring construction. In addition some bars are ribbed or twisted so that there isan extra mechanical grip.(1 mark)b) Figure

From your opinion, why partial safety factor of material
 ,
γ
m
for steel smaller thanpartial safety factor for concrete?(2 marks)
Answer:

Because steel are manufactured using systematic production process and goodquality control compared to concrete production process therefore the partialsafety factor of steel are smaller than partial safety factor of concrete.d) By using flow chart list the design process of reinforced concrete structures.(5 marks)

Figure
Q2
shows a first floor plan of an office building. The loading criteria are given asfollows:
Dead load, Imposed load,
Floor finishing = 0.8 kN/m
2
Slab 1 & Slab 2 = 2.5 kN/m
2
 Ceiling = 0.5 kN/m
2
Slab 3 = 4.0 kN/m
2
 Brickwall = 7.8 kN/m Slab 4 = 3.0 kN/m
2
 Concrete density = 24 kN/m
3
 a) Calculate the characteristic dead and imposed load for all slab.(4 marks)
Answer:Slab 1Dead Load, Gk
Slab Self-weight = 0.125 x 24 = 3.0 kN/m
2
 Floor Finishing = 0.8 kN/m
2
 Ceiling = 0.5 kN/m
2
 Total dead load, Gk = 4.3 kN/m
2
 Total imposed load, Qk = 2.5 kN/m
