BCC Intensive English Program Grade Seven Course Syllabus for Semester 1 / 2012-2013 Course Objectives: This course

e is an outcomes-based, English language enrichment course designed to develop and consolidate students skills in the areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. Specific course objectives include: To encourage students to be active and constructive in their own learning, using English as a tool to create meaning, seek knowledge, and to interact effectively with others in the school context and in the broader community. To extend students competence and confidence in using English in a range of demanding and challenging contexts. To integrate learning English with other areas of the College curriculum. To encourage students to become responsible, independent, reflective learners. To promote an atmosphere of collaboration and co-operation amongst students. Week Week 1: May 14 18 Topic Introduction/Getting to know you Distribution of materials and ice-breaking activities. Unit 1: Free time Student Book pages 6-13 What do you do with your free time? Students will read texts and listen to audio about hobbies and clubs. They will talk about their free time activities and about their likes and dislikes. Students will study present simple; positive and negative and questions and short answers. They will also study like + ing. Week 4: June 4 8 Week 5: June 11 15 Unit 2: Helping other people Student Book pages 14-21 Are you a volunteer? Students will read texts and listen to audio about volunteer activities. They will also talk about activities happening now, housework, and arranging to meet and making plans.

Week 2: May 21 25 Week 3: May 28 June 1

Students will study present continuous for activities happening now. They will also study the difference between present simple and present continuous. Unit 3: Who is your hero? Student Book pages 24-31 Who is your hero? Week 6: June 18 22 Week 7: June 25 29 Students will read texts and listen to audio about heroes. They will talk about past events, and they will talk about when and where they were born. Students will study past simple, the verb to be, and regular verbs; positive and negative. They will also study was born and were born. Week 8: July 2 6 IEP Mid-terms Unit 4: Making friends Student Book pages 32-39 Who are your friends? Week 9: July 9 13 Week 10: July 16 20 Students will read texts and listen to audio about friendships. They will learn to ask about the past, and retell stories. Students will study past simple; regular and irregular verbs, questions and short answers. Unit 5: Successful people Student Book pages 42-49 What is the meaning of success? Students will read texts and listen to audio about the meaning of success. They will talk about obligations, describe job requirements, and talk about people and their jobs. Students will study have to and don't have to. Unit 6: Eat for life Student Book pages 50-57 What do you like to eat? Students will read texts and listen to audio about food. They will talk about food and fitness, and good places to eat. Students will study countable and uncountable nouns; a and an, some and any, and much and many. They will talk about making arrangements, and discuss holiday plans. Students will study present continuous for future arrangements. Unit 9: It'll never happen Student Book pages 78-85 What will happen in the future? Students will read texts and listen to audio about future predictions. They will make future predictions, and talk about their lives in the future. Students will study will and wont for making future predictions. Week 5: Nov. 26 30 Review Week for IEP Midterms.

Students will listen to audio about survival and weather. They will learn to describe actions and weather. Students will study too + adjective and adverbs. Week 8 will also include time for Christmas projects. Christmas Break is December 22 January 1.

Week 9: Dec. 24 28

Christmas Break Students return Jan. 2. Reading/Project/Activity Week. Healthy Eating. Unit 13: Travelers tales Student Book pages 114-121 What country is the best place to visit? Students will read text and listen to audio about customs around the world. Students will give tourist advice, and learn to describe people. Students will study should/shouldn't, and What is it like?
