1 Corinthians 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church. Tongues is a biblical way to edify oneself. The Holy Spirit uses the utterance of tongues in prayer to help the believer charge and build up his/her spirit. Spending time speaking or singing in tongues will bring refreshing and strength to believers. Tongues is the foundation of a Spirit-filled lifestyle. Tongues helps us pray according to the will of God. Tongues aligns our spirits with the Spirit of God. Tongues fines tunes our spirits and makes us more sensitive to the leading and direction of the Holy Spirit. Tongues is the doorway into the supernatural and the gifts of the Spirit. People who speak in tongues generally operate in the other gifts of the Spirit as well. Tongues seems to be the dividing line between those who walk in the supernatural and those who do not. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. Prophecy can flow out of speaking in tongues. The Ephesian believers spoke in tongues and prophesied when they received the Holy Spirit. We often will speak in tongues before we utter a prophetic word. Tongues and interpretation of tongues is equivalent to prophesy. The church receives edification through prophecy and tongues and interpretation.

James 3:6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell. It is interesting that the tongue is what controls our lives. James talked about the power of the tongue. It should not be surprising then that Holy Spirit gives us utterance in tongues since the tongue is such a powerful part of directing our lives. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. I believe that the Holy Spirit uses speaking in tongues as a way to help direct our lives into the perfect will of God. Speaking in tongues helps us rise above the limitations of the mind. We can pray and sing beyond the limitations of our natural language and natural mind. Tongues can lift us into relams of the Spirit beyond our natural ability.
