BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 11

BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.

No Problems on the Road: Big Ten teams have proven to be just as successful on the road this season, owning a 16-15 record away from home in conference play. Last weekend, three Big Ten teams earned road triumphs, including Michigan over Minnesota, Nebraska at Michigan State and Penn State versus Purdue. Eight conference squads own a .500 or better record in road games this season with Ohio State and Penn State boasting 3-0 marks away from home. Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska are 2-1, while Indiana, Northwestern and Wisconsin each are 1-1 in road conference contests. Up to Double-Digits: After defeating Illinois last Saturday, Ohio State kept its unblemished record intact by improving to 10-0, the fourth time in the last 11 years the school has reeled off 10 wins to start the season. The Buckeyes are the only team in the country boasting double-digit victories this season, and one of six teams in the country with an undefeated record. Head coach Urban Meyer became the third coach in program history to win 10 straight contests to begin his tenure. It marks just the fourth time since 1905 a Big Ten coach has won 10 or more games to begin their coaching tenures. Ohio States Carol Widdoes won 12 straight from 1944-45, and Buckeye mentor Earle Bruce opened with an 11-0 mark in 1979, equaling the start of Michigans Bennie Oosterbaan from 1948-49. Opening with six straight wins in conference play, Meyer matched the fourth-best start by a Big Ten coach in conference games only. Bruce won his first 15 games, Michigans Fielding Yost won 10 consecutive Big Ten games, Widdoes reeled off eight straight wins, and Meyer matched the six straight conference victories by Oosterbaan. Michigan Gains Bowl Eligibility: Michigans road victory on Saturday against Minnesota not only gave the Wolverines a victory in the annual series for the Little Brown Jug, but also their sixth win of the season to earn bowl eligibility. The Wolverines eye their 42nd bowl berth in school history, coming on the heels of last seasons victory in the Allstate Sugar Bowl against Virginia Tech. Michigan is one of three Big Ten programs with 20 or more bowl victories, joining Nebraska and Penn State. Michigan is the fourth conference squad to become bowl eligible, joining Nebraska, Northwestern and Wisconsin. Michigan State, Minnesota Knocking on the Door: In addition to the Big Tens four teams already earning bowl eligibility, two more conference squads are within one victory of their sixth of the season. With a 5-5 record, Michigan State has a bye this week before ending the season with divisional matchups against Northwestern on Nov. 17 and at Minnesota on Nov. 24. Minnesota is 5-4 and has three games remaining on its schedule, including road games the next two weekends at Illinois and at Nebraska, before concluding the year against Michigan State on Nov. 24. Good Sports: Indianas Adam Replogle and Nebraskas Rex Burkhead were named two of 10 finalists for the annual Awards and Recognition Association (ARA) Sportsmanship Award. Given annually to one outstanding NCAA Division I collegiate football player who best personifies the spirit of sportsmanship, the award is now in its eighth year. Northwesterns Eric Peterman won the ARA Sportsmanship Award in 2008. The 2012 ARA Sportsmanship Award recipient will be announced later this year. Thanks to the Fans: Following this weekends slate of games, the Big Ten surpassed the twomillion mark for attendance during Big Ten games only. In six weeks of the conference season, the Big Ten boasts a total attendance of more than 2.1 million, averaging better than 69,000 fans per contests with 14 sellouts. The conference is on pace to pass the five-million mark in total attendance by seasons end for the eighth straight year and 10th time overall. The Big Ten is averaging nearly 70,000 per game among all contests this season, a mark which would rank among the top 10 all-time.

Big Ten Football Awards

The Big Ten will continue to honor its past while recognizing its current standouts at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign. The Big Tens enhanced football awards program presents 18 individual trophies in addition to the Big Ten Championship trophy, bearing the names of one or two former standouts. The distinguished names on these football awards honor just a small sampling of the countless student-athletes and coaches who have contributed to the conferences rich and storied history. Seventeen of the honors will be awarded immediately following the regular season, including awards for the best quarterback, running back, receiver, tight end, offensive lineman, defensive lineman, linebacker, defensive back, kicker and punter. Each of these individual position awards features the names of two former student-athletes. The Big Ten will also continue to honor the conferences top coaches, offensive and defensive players and linemen and freshmen with end-of-year trophies. Big Ten coaches have the opportunity to claim two awards. Media voters will continue to select the Dave McClain Coach of the Year, which has been awarded since 1972, while coaches vote for the Hayes-Schembechler Coach of the Year award. The top offensive player will receive the Graham-George Offensive Player of the Year award, the best defensive player will be awarded the NagurskiWoodson Defensive Player of the Year award and the best first-year standout will receive the ThompsonRandle El Freshman of the Year award. The winner of the Big Ten Football Championship Game will receive the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy, while the most outstanding player in the game will be awarded the Grange-Griffin Championship Game MVP award. The conference also created two postcollegiate awards - the Ford-Kinnick Leadership Award and the Dungy-Thompson Humanitarian Award. The full list of awards, along with a breakdown of the former standouts appearing in each awards name, appears to the right.

BIG TEN FOOTBALL WEEKLY RELEASE - WEEK 11

BIG TEN FOOTBALL DIVISIONAL TIEBREAKER

The Big Ten football championship will be decided by a game played between the two division champions. A team or teams that are not eligible to participate in a postseason football bowl game as a result of NCAA and/or Big Ten sanctions shall not be eligible to participate in the Big Ten football championship game. The winner of the Big Ten football championship game will represent the Conference in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) unless a conference team other than the champion is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll. The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie: (a) (b) If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step, the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. 1. The records of the three tied teams will be compared against each other 2. The records of the three tied teams will be compared within their division 3. The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5, and 6) 4. The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents; 5. The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series Poll following the completion of Big Ten regular season conference play shall be the representative in the Big Ten Championship Game, unless the two highest ranked tied teams are ranked within one spot of each other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the Big Ten Championship 6. The team with the best overall winning percentage [excluding exempted games] shall be the representative 7. The representative will be chosen by random draw. If one or both of the Big Ten division champions is ineligible to play in the Big Ten championship game, then the participant(s) in the Big Ten championship game shall be determined by the following procedure: a) b) c) d) If the ineligible team is tied for the division championship, then the team it tied with shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If two or more teams are tied with an ineligible team for the division championship, then the ineligible team is removed and the remaining teams revert to the tie-break procedure. The division runner-up shall be the Big Ten championship game representative. If there is a division runner-up tie, then the tied teams shall revert to the tie-break procedure.

If the championship game cannot be played (due to any reason beyond the control of the Big Ten Conference), the two division champions (using divisional tie-breakers as set forth above) shall be declared co-champions and the following procedure will be used to determine the Big Ten Conference representative to the Bowl Championship Series: a) b) Teams ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS poll will automatically be placed in the BCS championship game. If the two divisional representatives met previously in the season and neither is ranked No. 1 or No. 2 in the final BCS standings, the team ranked highest in the final BCS standings shall be the representative to the BCS, unless the other team is ranked within five or fewer places of the higher ranked team. In this case, the head-to-head results of the two teams shall determine the Conferences BCS representative. If the two divisional representatives did not meet previously during the season, the team ranked highest in the BCS standings shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams are tied in the BCS standings, the team with the best overall Big Ten record shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after d), the team with the best combined record of the tied teams against all common Big Ten opponents each team played that season shall be the BCS representative. If the two teams remain tied after e), the representative will be the team with the best overall winning percentage. If the two teams remain tied after f), the representative will be the team furthest removed from BCS participation. If the two teams remain tied after g), the representative shall be determined by a random draw.
