OFFICER SAFETY - OBJECT

SUICIDE BY HYDROGEN SULFIDE

Occurrence # 2012-239806 York Regional Police Circular # 2012-42874
On the 21st of August officers responded to a “Hazmat” call on 15th side road in the Township of King (12-239806). A citizen had calledin and advised that there was car parked off the side of the road with signs in the window “poison call 911”. There were two bodies in thecar and a strong smell of sulphur in the area . VFD Hazmat team attended and took air quality readings and registered
2500ppm of Hydrogen Sulfide. The coroner who attended advised that readings over 100ppm could be lethal.
This is becoming more popular on the internet as a method of suicide. VFD had just recently received training on how to deal withHydrogen Sulfide poisoning. If you attend any call of this type or come across signs posted on a residence or vehicle or have a strongodour of sulphur (rotten eggs) do not enter and engage the Fire Department Hazmat.Hydrogen sulfide is similar to cyanide, and it is five times more toxic than carbon monoxide. Natural hydrogen sulfide is found mostly inswamps and sewers due to the breakdown of organic matter and a lack of oxygen. For more information please copy and paste or Google this link: npstc.org/documents/H2S%20Report%20for%204112.pdf
