Identification Code mengidentifikasikan tipe dari bahan baku resin plastik dan memberikan kode angka untuk masing masing tipe palstik. The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc. (SPI) memperkenalkannya pada tahun 1988 sebagai akibat banyaknya pendaur ulang di seluruh negeri. Kode ini mempermudah pendaur ulang untuk mengidentifikasi dan memisahkan plastik sesuai jenisnya. Bahan baku tunggal atau campuran dapat didaur ulang menjadi produk baru bahkan dikonversi menjadi energi. Tetapi terjadi kesalahan penafsiran pada masyarakat (Indonesia), kode ini diartikan sebagai jumlah maksimal jenis plastik tersebut untuk di reuseable / recycling. Berikut adalah kode-kode plastik dan sifat-sifatnya :

Tujuan pemberian kode adalah untuk memudahkan dalam penanganan daur ulang. Hal ini karena masing masing tipe palstik didaur ulang menjadi produk yang berbeda.
