The hospital has seen the worst of tropical epidemics during its earlyexistence and the worst of the war in the 1940's. It is one of the very few Philippine hospitals thatremained open all throughout the war.

The Philippine General Hospital recognizes that research is an integral part of being a UniversityHospital. Furthermore, the PGH realizes that quality training and service are enhanced by qualityresearch.The PGH research committee was established in 1995 to address the hospital's research needs. Inthe same year, the first PGH Residents' and Fellows' Forum was held followed shortly by thefirst PGH Nurses' Research Forum. The first issue of the PGH research journal was also published in 1995. In 1996, several research activities were undertaken, the PGH EthicsCommittee was formed and a Hospital Research Week was held. A research fund was also setupto fund commissioned researches and grants.Today, the PGH continues to focus on research initiatives especially with the dawn of evidence- based medicine. The emergence of new health and medical problems, products of contemporarytreatment modalities and current lifestyles further justify the need to undertake more research allgeared towards improving the quality of life of every Filipino.
