Originally staged to help a young artist (The Unknown Soldiers) with lymphoma to produce and record a studio album, as wellas raising treasure for the Ellen McArthur Trust, a charitydedicated to enriching the lives of children with cancer.Formed in 2007 the independent festival has transformed froma two venue event into a project encompassing 15 venuesincluding The Kings Theatre and the Wedgewood Rooms,altogether making a combined capacity of 3,000 people. All in the interests of showcasing unsigned and newlyestablished musical talent, last year this included over 100regional, national and even international artists and bands.The good ship Southsea Fest is now sailed by a scurvy crew of enthusiastic individuals incorporating promoters from acrossthe south coast and London. Southsea Fest is captained by thelovely lady Josie Curtis.
The Audience
Southsea Fest 2011 had an attendance of 2,400 people whoranged from 12 to 50+ years of age as the variety of music andentertainment on offer drew a widely mixed crowd.The programming and date, which coincide with the return of students to college and the University of Portsmouth, ensures ahigh proportion of young adults and professionals with highexpendable incomes, for 2011 approximately 88% werebetween 18-35.60% of attendees were from the local area, 25% from the widerSouth and 15% are from further afield.
