Frederick County Report

Providing old-fashioned customer
service, combined with the latest
technology is Chuck Atkinsons se-
cret to success and this is evident in
the growth of his 10 month old busi-
ness, Advanced Graphics.
Located at 801 Cedar Creek Grade
in Winchester, he and his graphic
artist Phillip Woodrum, are kept
busy creating custom signage for lo-
cal and regional businesses, civic or-
ganizations, schools and churches.
Te majority of the signage cre-
ated at Advanced Graphics is
manufactured in-house using mod-
ern techniques, materials and Eco
Friendly Latex inks. Tey have part-
nered with outside sources for deliv-
ering high quality lighted signs and
other custom creative signage.
Owning a sign shop was a life-
long dream, and now 33 years later
it has come true, said Atkinson, who
fell in love with the sign manufac-
turing business in high school when
he worked part-time in a small Ala-
bama shop
Advanced Graphics currently em-
ploys three people and he plans to
add more ofce staf soon to support
the growth in business.
We love what we do; were excit-
ed and are always researching new
ideas, materials and manufacturing
methods, he said.
He brings a wealth of experience
to his new business and comes to it
with a background in management
and fnance. He looks for oppor-
tunities to utilize his photography
skills and creative ideas.
His number one management
style, he asserts, is that the customer
comes frst. Chuck is quick to ex-
plain that even in the slow economy,
business is good and growing simply
because it is solidly based on excel-
lent old-fashioned business practices
and delivering the best product pos-
sible.
Do what you say you will do and
the customers will return is prov-
ing to be so true in my business, he
continued.
Besides signs, they also ofer a full
range of promotional advertising
specialty products such as imprinted
cups, mugs, water bottles and pens
as well as business forms, Christmas
cards, stationery, checks, and wed-
ding invitations and accessories.
A growing segment of the busi-
ness is custom printed apparel. T-
shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and relat-
ed garments are a major marketing
tool for a business.
Vehicle lettering and wraps is a
popular advertising medium that the
company can deliver. Te wrapping
process can be utilized not only on
vehicles, but on many others. Ad-
vanced Graphics recently wrapped
the sides and fronts of display refrig-
erators for Dos Logo Gringos Salsa
with the companys notable Chili
Pepper People logos to be used in
display marketing of their locally
manufactured salsa.
With the Holidays approach-
ing, the company ofers a full line
of Christmas Cards from Carlson
Craft. Personalized cards are a great
way to say Tank You during the
holidays.
As the company continues to
grow, Advanced Graphics will de-
velop e-commerce web solutions to
make it even more convenient for
customers to place orders, but for
now, Advanced Graphics invites ev-
eryone to visit their website at www.
advanced-graphics.biz and to visit
their showroom at 801 Cedar Creek
Grade. Te company will be de-
lighted to send a representative to
your business or ofces to assist with
your sign and advertising needs.
Chuck has lived in Winchester
for seven years and has nothing but
praise for the city itself. He noted
that the upgrading of the streets and
revitalization of the downtown area
shows real pride.
I love Winchester. It has amazing
architecture; its a good place to live
and you feel a sense of community,
he noted.
Te company is a member of the
Top of Virginia Regional Chamber,
and an active member of a Business
Network International group. Na-
tionally, Advanced Graphics is a reg-
istered member of the Advertising
Specialty Institute and the Specialty
Graphic Imaging Association.

Rotary Club bidding for good online auction
By Carol Ballard
Frederick County Report

Hungry and deserving families
will be getting a lot of help this win-
ter due to the eforts of Frederick
Countys Rotary Club.
Teir current online auction
called Bidding for Good will beneft
CCAP- (Congregational Commu-
nity Action Project) a local char-
ity that maintains a complete food
pantry, operates a clothing room
for both genders of all sizes, and of-
fers assistance in other areas such
as rents, utilities and prescription
drugs.
It will also beneft Rotarians
Against Hunger, a hunger relief or-
ganization which operates interna-
tionally under the name Stop Hun-
ger Now.
Te auction, which started on
Nov. 7, will run until Nov. 28 and
its open for bidding with over 74
items so far.
Tis years response has been
good. Each year the list of people
contacted by email has grown.
Weve contacted 2,500 and people
are already bidding, said Stephen
M. Gyurisin, of Advance Planning
Associates, LC and public relations
chairman for the group.
Its been pretty quick out of the
gate. So far weve got a little over
$1,500 and our goal is $10,000. Im
confdent well achieve that. Weve
got really great sponsors and dona-
tions are still coming in, he said.
Tis year in particular, Fran
Ricketts (president) of Winchesters
CCAP is helping out 200 families
locally who need a lot of assistance.
Were really glad to help them and
hope its a success. Tere are lots of
interesting items, but wed love to
have more. If anyone has something
to donate, call us. he said.
People can also contribute by do-
nating cash or becoming an auction
sponsor.
Tey can do this without leav-
ing the house and going to an auc-
tion, he said. He believes the online
auction is more successful this year
because so many people are used
to doing a lot of their shopping on-
line. He also predicted that the last
weekend before the 28th will be
very active for bidders.
Anyone may contact the group
to donate items and members of
the auction committee will come
and pick them up. For businesses
like restaurants or gas stations, its
a popular and simple process to do-
nate gift certifcates.
Te hottest item right now is
Bells Clothing who donated a $500
gift certifcate. Its gotten a lot of ac-
tion so far and it was nice of them
Courtesy Photo---Rotarians Against Hunger, a hunger relief organization which operates inter-
nationally under the name Stop Hunger Now will receive a donation from this years Rotary
Club of Frederick Countys Bidding for Good online auction.

He also mentioned that another
great advantage to doing an online

ing to 34,000 Rotary clubs in more

converting the pavilion and shufeboard court at Christianson Family-

(parent/guardian must sign if skater is a minor) and attach a skate pavil-
ion sticker on their helmet which must be worn at all times while using

Shenandoah Valley
Electric Cooperative
warns of potential
payment scam
Shenandoah Valley Elec-
tric Cooperative (SVEC) has
recently learned of a scam in
which a member in the Win-
chester area was contacted by
a person stating that they were
an employee of the Coop-
erative, and that the member
needed to pay the delinquent
amount owed on their SVEC
account immediately by credit
card, or they would be discon-
nected.
First and foremost, we want
our members to know that the
Cooperative will communi-
cate about potential termina-
tion of electric service with
them through a mailed noti-
fcation, not through a phone
call asking the member to
pay for their service by credit
card, SVEC President & CEO
Myron Rummel said. Fortu-
nately, the member had come
to our Winchester district of-
fce to check on the situation.
When the scammer called
back, the member informed
the person that she was in the
SVEC ofce, and they hung
up. Rummel suggested that if
members have any questions
about their account, they can
call their local ofce for more
information.

Frederick County Report
Te 2012 Presidential campaign is
fnally in the books. Te vast major-
ity of Americans, regardless of their
political leanings, are likely pleased
by that simple fact. Political junkies
are consoling themselves by already
look forward to the 2014 midterm
elections and even the 2016 Presi-
dential election. Virginia political
gurus, thankfully, do not have long
to wait. Our state will elect our next
governor next fall and the primary
campaigns for both parties are al-
ready quickly taking shape.
Te culmination of this past cam-
paign was something of an anti-cli-
max. While the popular vote was
indeed quite close, the long elec-
tion night that many expected did
not materialize. President Barack
Obama scored a decisive win in
the electoral college, winning every
single battleground state except for
North Carolina. (For the record,
President Obama exceeded this
writers prediction of 290 electoral
votes, achieving 332 electoral votes).
Here in Virginia, the President won
by three percentage points. His per-
formance in Frederick County itself
was very similar to his performance
four years ago, losing badly to Gov-
ernor Mitt Romney in the county-
wide vote while edging a small victo-
ry in the city of Winchester. Perhaps
most impressive, was President
Obamas narrow victory in Florida, a
state even Democratic leaning poll-
sters had believed was likely to land
in Governor Romneys column.
While the electoral map looked
quite blue, the popular vote did
paint a diferent picture, one of a
country split bitterly down the mid-
dle. While the map itself may look
very similar to 2008, this was truly
a diferent ending to a very difer-
ent campaign. Te President won
because he had, without a doubt,
the most sophisticated and fawless
ground game in modern Presiden-
tial history. He won because he was
able to raise an amazing amount of
money, and go toe-to-toe with Rom-
ney and his Super PAC allies on the
air. He won because he was suc-
cessful, early in the summer when
Romneys guard was down, in defn-
ing the Massachussetts governor as
a corporate raider. Even Republican
political consultants now admit this.
While everyone can disagree about
who should have won this election,
few can doubt that the best cam-
paign did indeed win.
In addition to these tactical po-
litical factors, the changing de-
mographics of this nation helped
reelect this President, and point to-
ward dark clouds on the horizon for
future Republican hopes if they do
not come to terms with their partys
image. President Obama continued
to achieve historic margins among
African American and Hispanic vot-
ers, and had a signifcant lead among
female voters. Most smart Republi-
cans understand, while they do not
have to abandon their small gov-
ernment principles, they must fnd
a way to market themselves beyond
their narrowing current demograph-
ics.
Now that the campaign is over, the
serious business of governing must
go on. Unfortunately, as we have
seen in recent years, this business
is much harder to predict than that
of elections. Elections have a math-
ematical quality to them, and while
there is still ample room for gut in-
stinct, numbers are coming to domi-
nate the storytelling of electoral pol-
itics. Governing is not about math,
at its heart. It is about maneuvering,
negotiating, and compromising.
Here is hoping that both sides are
good at compromising.

On Dec. 1, 1830, French novelist
Victor Hugo is due to turn in a draft of
his book Notre Dame de Paris (The
Hunchback of Notre Dame). Despite
his contract, he instead wrote two
plays, Marion de Lorme and Her-
nani, and the book is not published
until 1831.
On Nov. 26, 1862, Oxford math-
ematician Charles Lutwidge Dodgson
sends a handwritten manuscript called
Alices Adventures Under Ground
to 10-year-old Alice Liddell. Dodgson
made up the story one day on a picnic,
and Alice insisted he write it down. He
published it under his nom de plume,
Lewis Carroll, in 1865.
On Nov. 28, 1914, the New York
Stock Exchange reopens for bond
trading after nearly four months, the
longest stoppage in the exchanges
history. The outbreak of World War I
in Europe forced the NYSE to shut its
doors on July 31, 1914.
On Dec. 2, 1942, Enrico Fermi,
Italian-born Nobel Prize-winning
physicist, directs and controls the
first nuclear chain reaction. He cre-
ated a jury-rigged laboratory under the
bleachers in Stagg Field at the Univer-
sity of Chicago.
On Nov. 30, 1954, the first mod-
ern instance of a meteorite striking
a human being occurs at Sylacauga,
Ala., when an 8 1/2 pound meteorite
crashes through the roof of a house
and into the living room, bounces off a
radio, and strikes a woman on the hip.
The victim suffered a nasty bruise.
On Nov. 29, 1963, one week after
President John F. Kennedy was fatally
shot while riding in a motorcade in
Dallas, President Lyndon Johnson
establishes a special commission to
investigate the assassination. After
10 months the Warren Commission
report was released, concluding that
there was no conspiracy.
On Nov. 27, 1978, former Board
of Supervisors member Dan White
murders Mayor George Moscone and
Supervisor Harvey Milk at City Hall
in San Francisco. When White pleaded
a diminished capacity defense and
claimed that copious amounts of junk
food caused him to suffer mental prob-
lems, the so-called Twinkie Defense
was born.
