Mass Tourism, Diversification of Tourism and Health Tourism in Turkey

Both due to the inefficiency of mass tourism caused amongst others by such
trends as “all inclusive” my desire to let the younger generation of tour guides
deal with mass tourism, my desire to engage myself in other areas of tourism
in Turkey. Thanks to some coincidences, I became acquainted with health
tourism in Turkey and my belief in this increasing day by day.

I performed for nine seasons duties of representation and tour guiding at

Balcova Termal Spa for the Norwegian patients sent by the Norwegian Health
authorities. In the beginning of this period, I was considering myself purely as
a tour guide and I was not able to conceive the fact that the main reason for
their stay at Balcova Termal Spa was treatments.
By getting in close contact with this group of patients, I learned to share their
pains and so I could afterwards start seeing the huge potential of health
tourism in Turkey.

Working as a tour guide in turkish health tourism is not a job of pleasures.

Sometimes to share the patients’ pain and sorrow may also make the guide
tired. Of course there are times when you share the pleasures. Anyhow, beeing
a tour guide in health tourism requires patience. I mean that a tour guide
working in health tourism should be concerned even with the heels of the
patient’s shoes. Shortly speaking beeing a tour guide in the health sector
means close and intimate contact with and follow-up of the patients.

The first area where I became acquainted with health tourism in Turkey was
the treatment of rheumatic diseases. Every year 1.100 norwegian patients
from Norway as the main group and other patient groups mainly from the
Nordic countries have come to Balcova Termal Spa.

Afterwards, they were also offered dental treatment services at the dental
clinic within Balcova Termal Spa. Sun Dental Clinic has had a pioneering role
in the dental tourism of Turkey. These dental services ranged from sole
porcelain crowns to bridges. It is also interesting to note that these patients
bought glasses, which are usually half the price of those in Europe.

Eye-treatment by laser also offers a potential. In addition to smaller scale

operations such as hernia, aesthetic operations, I have even observed some
foreigners choosing to be operated at the turkish hospitals in order to save
money and avoid the long queues in the home country.

Health tourism potential in Turkey covers a wide spectrum of applications.

Last, but not the least, I can mention wellness-fitness, sslimming, detox
programmes.

Turkey with health and treatment institutions and clinics and competitive
prices has a big potential. In health tourism one has the advantage of making
a reasonable profit if standards are met in contrast to the ineffeciency
situation in the turkish mass tourism.

Kitle Turizmi, Turizmin Çeşitlendirilmesi ve Sağlık Turizmi

Gerek kitle turizminin “her şey dahil” vb. sebeplerle geldiği verimsiz durum,
gerek te bu mecrayı daha enerjik genç turist rehberi arkadaşlara bırakma
gerekliliğinden dolayı, son dönemde bende diğer turizm alanlarında çalışma
isteği artıyor. Biraz da rastlantılar vesilesi ile sağlık turizmi ile tanıştım ve bu
alana inancım gittikçe artıyor.

Balçova Termal Tesislerinde Norveç Sağlık Bakanlığının gönderdiği hastalara

dönük temsilcilik ve rehberlik görevini 9 sezon boyunca icra ettim. Bu
dönemin başlarında kendimi bir rehber olarak algılamaktaydım ve bu
hastaların Türkiye-Balçova’ya gelişinde ana sebebin tedavi olduğu gerçeğini
doğrusu kavrayamamıştım. Hemen yanı başımdaki bir gerçekti, ancak ben
Onları tur, halı, deri, bahşiş olarak görmekteydim.

Bu kitleyle şahsi dostluklar kurarak, ağrılarına ve sızılarına ortak olabilmeyi

öğrendim ve sağlık turizminin muazzam potansiyelini de görmeye başladım.

Sağlık turizmi alanında turist rehberliği keyif ağırlıklı bir şey değil. Kimi
zaman tedavi amaçlı gelen müşterilerin ağrılarını-sızılarını paylaşmak,
rehberde de yorgunluk yaratıyor; tabii ki neşeyi de paylaşıyorsunuz ancak
eğer turizmin bu alanında iseniz ağrı-sızıya da ortak oluyorsunuz. Bu nedenle
sağlık turizminde rehberlik sabır gerektiyor. Bu konuda zamanın tesis
müdürü Mehmet Ali Çalkaya’nın belirttiği gibi, sağlık turizmi için ülkemize
gelen müşterin “ayakkabısının topuğuyla dahi ilgilenmek gerekiyor”. Özetle
bu alanda turist rehberliği, müşteri ile daha yakın ilişki ve daha iyi tanımla
bir “tam markajı” gerektiriyor.

Sağlık turizminde ilk tanıştığım alan romatizmal hastalıkların tedavisi idi. Bu

vesileyle Balçova Termal Tesislerine tedavi amaçlı 1. 100 Norveçli hasta başta
olmak üzere, özellikle kuzey ulkelerinden gelmekteydi.

Zamanla bu kitleye diş tedavisi olanağı da sunuldu ve gelen hastaların üçte

bir kadarının az sayıda dişten kanal tedavisi, köprü vb. kadar muhtelif
uygulamaları seçtiğini gördüm. Bu rehbere tercüme hizmetleri karşılığında
hizmet bedeli şeklinde kazanç sağlama olanağı getirdi.

Gözlemlediğim diğer bir gelişme ise, makul fiyatlar nedeniyle, ihmal

edilemiyecek bir kitlenin gözlük satın aldığı idi. Bunlar benim birebir
yaşadıklarım. . .

Ayrıca yabancılara lazerle göz tedavisinin de artış gösterdiği gözlemleniyor.

Çok sayıda olmasa da, bel fıtığı vb. ameliyatlar ve estetik amaliyatları da
daha artan sayıda gerçekleştiriliyor.

Sağlık turizminde dikkat çekilecek alanlardan biri de “wellness-fitness”

programları, zayıflama, detox programları. . . Sağlık turizminde belli bir
rekabetin getirdiği fiyatsal inmeler olsa da, belli bir standardın tutturulması
şart olduğundan karlılık, kitle turizmine nazaran daha çok garanti altında.

Modern ve dünya standartlarına uyumlu sağlık tesisleri ve klinikleri ile,

Türkiye’nin bu artan potansiyelden daha etkin yararlanması gerekliliğine
inanıyorum.
