PRACTICE IN SKIMMING AND SCANNING Example: OSE 1 pp 32-33 The Indian Tiger

(See: Skimming and Scanning )

SKIMMING: 1. Skim read (ie first sentence of each paragraph) pages 32-33 with the pupils. 2. Ask the pupils (without them reading any more) to write down 5 things about tigers that they might learn from these pages. 3. Ask the pupils to note which paragraph or paragraphs they might examine (scan) to find specific information about each of those areas. They should reread the topic sentences only. 4. Ask pupils to identify which paragraph or paragraphs they might examine (scan) in order to answer each of the questions on page 32. (Again they should refer to topic sentences only). Ask them to indicate by an asterisk those questions where it is not clear from skimming where to look. Discuss these with the class. SCANNING: 1. Ask pupils to answer the questions on page 32 by writing down all possible answers to each question and then indicating the most suitable answers by an asterisk. 2. Ask pupils to make up a scanning question from page 33 and write down their own list of possible answers. They should then ask their group to individually write down the possible answers for the question and asterisk the most suitable answer. When the class have done this, any difficulties should be discussed. You can repeat this exercise with the following passages: - Tag on page 18 from OSE 1 - Avalanche pp34-35 from OSE 2 - Space Colonies pp72-73 from OSE 2 - The Amityville Horror pp84-85 from OSE 2 And with the following passages (though you will have to make up scanning questions): - The Wolves pp 38-40 from OSE 1 - Flood pp52-53 from OSE 1 - Tornado pp58-59 from OSE 1 - The Island pp 112-114 from OSE 1 - Escape p70 from OSE 1 A particular use of skimming and scanning is to order points from a passage into a Sequence. Exercises can be made up from the above passages. The exercises below involve some of the skills needed: - Australian Bush Fire p65 from OSE 1 - Children Against the Jungle pp4-5 from OSE 2 - The Killing of Grendel p131 from OSE 2 - Evacuees pp29-30 from OSE 2 - Indian Warning pp32-33 from OSE 2 Exercises that are more Level specific can be done with groups using the passages and questions from the Reading Boxes.
