First Encounter
 LILLY 16/1/09
It was raining when I woke up. Brilliant, I wasalready starting a new school. Leaving everyoneof my friends behind to go to small town of Plutein England. England was renowned for raining but surely in spring the rules change! Only onegood thing comes of the rain in my opinion. I amalways so focused. There is something about thegentle patter against my window that helps meconcentrate, gently lulling me into a calm state. Ihated the sun, it always reminded me of myparents… at least when they were happy. Bothhad now gone their separate ways and neitherhad really wanted me. In many ways I was apainful reminder of the life they had before. Soafter months of kicking it back with my oldestand I guess, now my only brother, I realised Ineeded a little bit of structure to my life.Thankfully Dylan didn’t mind, he knew that Iwanted to do something with my life and unlikehim; I wasn’t going to settle with becoming a bookstore owner. Not that that wasn’t goodenough for him; I have just always wanted more.So my Aunt Jean decided to take me in. Both myparents said I didn’t have to, but one glance intotheir grief-stricken eyes told me that they didn’treally want me. So I moved continents, all the

way from sunny Florida, to gloomy England. Iwasn’t going to lie to myself! Of course I wasexcited. I could get away from everything and golive in a totally new place. Make new friendswho had absolutely no knowledge of myprevious life. I was riveted by just thinking abouthow I could go to school and not see pity oneveryone’s faces. I doubted this would be thesame with my teachers as I was sure that Jeanhad told them about my family’s troubles. Jeanwas such a kind woman, always looking out forme and trying to be there when my mother, andher sister never was. She wasn’t intruding, in fact just the opposite, everything about Jean I lovedand in a way I saw her as my mother. Back inFlorida I hardly ever saw Jean, we were over 3000miles apart but I spoke to her on the phone allthe time and we emailed regularly. Shewas morethen my aunt… she was my best friend. I spoketo her more than my actual mother. I could tellthat she worried about me; nothing pained hermore to see that I was unwanted. She stoppedspeaking to my mother after that, she knew howmuch it upset Debbie to know how unwanted Ifelt. I knew that it hurt Jean to not be able to talkto her and that she wanted to but she was such amartyr. It was her only fault; she always madesure other people were ok before she was. It

didn’t surprise me when I found myself awakening to a completely different room than Ihad fallen asleep in. She had unpacked for mewhilst I slept, sorted out my clothes and hung upmy outfit for the day. I blinked my eyes open…she was truly amazing. Sitting up stiffly Isurveyed my surroundings taking in what I saw.My three suitcases, which I had originally flungdown at my moment of arrival and let them spillmessily across to floor had been tucked underthe desk and my clothes were now presumablyfolded and had been placed in the drawers. Mypictures were now hanging on the walls and mycomputer set up on the desk. I noticed a piece of paper attached to the screen. Gruffly getting up Ishuffled to my new desk. My eyes groggy andheavy impaired my vision slightly as I attemptedto read her incredibly intricate script.
“LillyI had to go to work early today, they needed me to sortout some of the new magazine pages. Sorry I’m nothere to wish you luck on your first day of school, havea great day!I Love you, Jean x”
