WhileBaiwomenemphasizedthattourismbringseconomicopportunities,Mosuowomen,whowerealreadyeconomicallyindependent,onlynotedmoderateimprovementstotheirstandardofliving.

Informantsmentionednumerouspositiveandnegativeimpactsthathadnoevidentrelationshipwithaccesstoincome,e.g.exposuretootherlanguages,culturesandtheconceptofmodernization.

Mosuowomenshowedparticularconcernoverthepreservationoftheirtraditionsbynotinghowtourismbroughtcrime,culturalmisrepresentation,andtemptationstoMosuogirls.Inconclusion,thisstudyaffirmsthattourismdevelopmentbringsmuchneededeconomicrelievetoperipheralregionsdespitethefactthatthehostsonlyretainasmallfractionoftherevenuesduetonationaltouragencies’controlovertransportationandlodgingandimmigrantmerchantsdominatingtheretailofsouvenirs.Italsosuggeststhatincreasedaccesstoincomeonlybenefitswomen’ssocialstandingincommunitieswheretheyhavebeentraditionallyalienatedfromthelocaleconomy,whereasincommunitieswherewomenhavebeencommerciallyactive,tourismonlyprovidesanalternativesourceofincome.Lastly,animportantimplicationfortourism-relatedresearchinChinaandthebroaderAsiaPacificregion,wheretraditionalsocio-culturalfactorsplayanimportantroleindetermininggenderrelations,isthatsincetourismaffectswomeninmanywaysnotrelatedtoeconomicbenefits,anyexaminationsoftourismimpactsonwomenshouldencompassbotheconomicandsocio-culturalfactors.
