Thanks, Andy
Trenton to honor NHL star Greene and recognize his charitable work

The News-Herald

The NHL lockout has one happy side effect: Trenton product Andy Greene, who plays for the New Jersey Devils, will be available for a special ceremony tonight as the Trenton Trojans begin their 2012-13 home season against traditional rival Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook. Greene, who graduated from Trenton in 2001, will be on hand as his high school jersey number is retired. Between the first and second periods of Wednesdays game, a banner celebrating Green and retiring his No. 8 will be raised into the Kennedy Recreation Centers rafters along with Trentons state championship banners. Greene played three seasons with the Trojans, helping them to a state Greene championship his freshman year. The ninth-grader scored a goal in the 3-2 championship game win over Grosse Pointe South at the end of that season. Green made the all-state Dream Team as a sophomore and was named Michigans Mr. Hockey after his junior year. Before his senior year, Greene joined the Compuware hockey organization, where he played two years. In his time there, he was team captain and part of a national championship team. From there, Greene played four years at in the CCHA at Miami of Ohio, where he earned All-American honors his senior year. An undrafted free agent, he signed with the Devils in 2006 and has played with them since, signing a series of contracts with the New Jersey team, including the fouryear deal he is currently working on. In the off-season, Green returns to Trenton where he runs a week-long summer hockey camp, whose proceeds go to benefit such organizations as the Trenton Baseball Association and the Trenton Hockey Association. Veteran Trenton Coach Mike Turner, who coached Greene all three of his years at Trenton, said Greenes generosity in giving back to his hometown, in addition to his on-ice accomplishments are what prompted tonights celebration. The Trenton-Cranbrook game gets under way at 7:30 p.m.
