Gordon Brown: The Financial Crisis Represents ‘Difficult Birth-Pangs of a New Global Order’
Published on 01-26-2009

http://www.blacklistednews.com/news-3093-0-9-9--.htmlSource: AFPLONDON — Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday the financial crisis must not bean excuse to retreat into protectionism and instead be viewed as the "difficult birth-pangsof a new global order".In a speech, he will urge countries to avoid "muddling through as pessimists" and "makethe necessary adjustment to a better future and setting the new rules for this new globalorder", according to his office.Official data confirmed Friday that Britain is in recession. Days earlier, the governmentunveiled a new package of measures to help the flow of credit in the economy, but Brownhas argued global action is needed for a quick recovery. He will warn Monday that the crisis has given the world a choice: "We could allow thiscrisis to start a retreat from globalisation."As some want, we could close our markets -- for capital, financial services, trade and for labour -- and therefore reduce the risks of globalisation."But that would reduce global growth, deny us the benefits of global trade and confinemillions to global poverty."Or we could view the threats and challenges we face today as the difficult birth-pangs of a new global order -- and our task now as nothing less than making the transition througha new internationalism to the benefits of an expanding global society."Britain is hosting a summit of the Group of 20 (G20) advanced and developing nations inLondon on April 2, and Brown has held preparatory talks with the French and Germanleaders, as well as new US President Barack Obama. He will meet with Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao, South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung-Soo and Japanese premier Taro Aso, as well as World Bank chief RobertZoellick at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos this week.Brown's Downing Street office said he would discuss with them "how we can best work internationally on financial reform, economic expansion and the creation of jobs in newsectors such as the environment."
The Olivet Discourse - The Beginning of Birth Pangs

The disciples had just been told of the coming destruction of Jerusalem, as prophesied byChrist in Matthew 24:2. Of course, they turned their thoughts to the end of the age, andthe promised return and reign of the Messiah. A little while later, while sitting with Christon the Mount of Olives, Peter, James, John and Andrew approached Jesus and askedHim, "Tell us, when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"Jesus' answer gives us the most detailed and specific account in the Word of Godconcerning the events that will lead up to the return of Christ. When we compare thisaccount with passages from Daniel, 1 & 2 Thessalonians, 2 Peter and the book of Revelation, we can assemble a clear picture of what we are to expect as we await theComing of our Lord. Many scholars have noticed a parallel between Jesus' teaching on the Mount of Olivesand the sequence of events as the seals of the scroll in Revelation 6 are broken (seeSchulyer English,
Studies in the Gospel According to Matthew
, Arno C. Gaebelein,
TheGospel According to Matthew II
, and Dwight Pentecost,
Things to Come
). It makes sensethat since Jesus is the author of both the Olivet Discourse and the Book of Revelation(see Rev. 1:1), and that since both accounts deal with the coming of Christ, the twoaccounts should parallel, define and clarify one other.Christ begins his reply to the disciples with a solemn warning: "See to it that no onemisleads you." Indeed, Scripture is full of such warnings that we not be deceivedconcerning the return of Christ. Paul warned the Thessalonian believers not to be misledabout the time of Christ's coming. He wrote, "Now we request you, brethren, with regardto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, that you not bequickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or aletter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come.
Let no one in any waydeceive you
, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed…" (2 Thess 2:1-3). The Book of Revelation speaks of thedeceiving power of the second Beast, also called the False Prophet, when it says, "He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth inthe presence of men. And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signswhich it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast" (Rev. 13:13-14). Andlater in the Olivet Discourse Jesus states, "Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is theChrist,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him. For false Christs and false prophets will ariseand will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect" (Matt24:23-24). As time runs out, Satan will pull out all the stops in his attempts to deceiveand mislead people so that they will believe the lie, and not turn to the Truth. We canthank God that His elect will not be misled.Following this warning Jesus gives several definite signs in verses 5-7 that will point toHis soon return: false Christs, wars, famines and earthquakes. As we compare these signswith the opening of the first few seals of Revelation 6, we see a noticeable parallel:
