Preface

NOTE ON MAPS: All maps shown are historical maps except for the roads and pathswhich are contemporary. Main roads are in heavier print; minor tracks and roads inlighter print. As well as place names, all of which are old names mentioned in earlycharters, family names are shown in roughly the area over which they had influence. This is true also of monastery lands, it being difficult to be precise about boundaries andplace names in old charters. The historical material is of a provisional nature, the main purpose being to make morewidely available the small amount of existing local historical research. No guarantee is given for the accuracy of this information in many cases; this demandsan original research among source materials which is badly overdue and under presentstandards could be accomplished only by a team project. Many local people have contributed historical information, both published andunpublished and the library wishes to acknowledge the work of Peter Dawson and theDundee College of Education project on the history of local mills and help from MrDavidson, Mr Williamson, and Thomas Thomson (Blairgowrie) Ltd. Mrs Grant andmany others, none of whom are in any way responsible for mistakes andmisinterpretations. Finally the library wishes to thank all the local people who contributed memories andstories which made this book possible and for the interest they took in the storycompetition which led to its conception.BIBLIOGRAPHYThis is a list of the principal sources used in the historical parts of the book. Thosemarked P are obtainable from Perth & Kinross District Libraries; those marked B areheld at Blairgowrie Branch Library; those marked R cannot be removed from librarypremises.Local Sources
