Internet Guide, Volume 1, Issue 1 January 20 2009 Page
Welcome to the rst issue o the Internet Guide.I have wanted to publish a magazine dedicatedto the South Arican Internet or years, and amthus thrilled to be launching this digital versionright at the start o 2009.South Arican Internet users have had a hardtime embracing the web’s potential. Our band-width is restrictive, the costs o online accessprohibitive, and the usage prevalence is rela-tively low. Yet, despite these challenges, thosewho are active in the online space, whether ascreators or users, have done a remarkable jobo integrating the web into everyday lie. Thegood news is that i everything goes accord-ing to plan, South Arica is in or a tremendousboost o bandwidth at almost no extra cost (seepage 12). What that means is that we are goingto push our usage o the web to the limits, andhopeully raise the bar to international level. This e-mag is written or everyone who wantsto become more amiliar with the online world, both local and international. It is written orthose o you who are just getting started usingthe web, as well as or veteran users who alreadyspend most o their time online. The web is, o course, a vast vessel o content and no one canever know everything. Hopeully, the pages thatollow will give you nuggets o inormation asto how the web can best be used to make youmore productive and ecient, both in your pro-essional and leisure time. And it will stronglypush to the ore some o the excellent sites thatare created by South Aricans. The e-mag is published twice a month, onthe rst and third Tuesday. It is created in .pd ormat, which means it can be read on virtuallyany computer that has online access, can beorwarded, saved, printed or emailed to others. It is also ree, so please spread ar and wide! The e-mag will also have a website (www.inter-netguide.co.za), where I envision most o the ar-ticles will appear in a blog ormat. This will allowor comments and discussions, which shouldprove to be a lot o un. I’ll keep you posted, or just check it out at your leisure. In the meantime, should you have comments or suggestions orthe magazine, you can email those directly tome ateved@internetguide.co.za.For other waysto get involved, see page 15.I hope you enjoy this rst issue. It’s just a sample- I am testing the waters so to speak. Expectmore with each orthcoming issue.!Cheers!Eve Dmochowska
