A practical guide for those who aspire to develop the vision of the Soul.andThe Magic Mirror and How to Use ItBy Paschal Beverly Randolph 1825-1875Published byThe Confederation of InitiatesBeverly Hall, Quakertown, Pa.Paschal Beverly Randolph, Physician, Philosopher, world traveller,Supreme Grand Master of the Fraternitas Rose Crucis; Hierarch of Eulisand the Ansaireh, member of L'Ordre du Lis of France; the Double Eagleof Prussia, and Order of the Rose of England, was born in the city of NewYork, October 8, 1825.CONTENTSIntroduction and Notes by R. Swinburne Clymer, M.D.Preface by Dr. Allan F. OdellChapter I Seership or Soul SightChapter II Theory and Practice; The Magic MirrorChapter III Magical Arts; Making Magical MirrorsINTRODUCTION AND NOTESSeership is the work of an Orientalist, which term is commonly understood to mean, either one whohas been born in the mystic east or one who, due to the possession of a mindeasily capable ofcomprehending the thoughts and feelings of these people, and deeply in sympathywith them, canexpress their thoughts and emotions as effectively as if they were native toitself.Dr Randolph first conceived the idea of writing such a book as Seership about theyear 1850, aboutthe time of his first visit to Paris; this much he tells us himself. It is easilypossible, though we haveno proof of this fact, that while in France he became familiar with some of theteachings thencurrent on the subject, for though nothing like the present book had ever beenpublished by anywriter of any nation, nevertheless the practice of occultism was well known to nofew occultstudents as witness the many stories current connecting Dr. Dee, Cagliostro andothers with mirrorgazing and seership, all of whom lived and were active in occult practices beforeDr. Randolph'stime. One thing is certain, if we may believe but a fraction of what is written onthe subject, thevery air of Paris was permeated with every from of occult thought during theseveral periods whenDr. Randolph visited there, even the men closely associated with the affairs ofthe government ofFrance, being members of the Fraternity, deeply versed and keenly interested inthis subject. It is

therefore small wonder that Dr. Randolph became fired with the thought of writinga text on thesubject and clarifying the varius teachings relative to the practice so that alltruly interested mightreadily understand the method of procedure and its results. At the early period of 1850-51 Dr. Randolph succeeded in doing little more thanmaking numerousnotes on the subject of Soul Sight, his time and attention being occupied withother and seeminglymore immediately important subjects. At this period Charles Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, the Napoleon III, of history wasperhaps thecentral personality of all Europe and certainly so of France. Napoleon was sothoroughly steeped inoccultism that even the most hardened historians call him "mystic minded," andthough officiallyconnected with the Fraternity and active in occult affairs he, himself was giftedwith either SoulSight or the power of occult prophesy. Napoleon was first informed of the strangepowers possessedby Dr. Randolph, through General Hitchock who had visited Paris in the lateforties and hadbecome acquainted with Napoleon, and then through Drs. Fontain and Bergevia, theFrenchRosicrucians living in New York.Napoleon firmly believed that Mystics or Occultists had the power to foresee thefuture in more orless detail and above all else, he sought someone who was capable of reading themystic scroll. DrRandolph was invited to visit Paris and the Rosicrucian Lodge when in session. This he did , andthe seance was so successful, that shortly thereafter he was made the SupremeGrand Master of theRosicrucians of the world who derived authority from the Supreme Grand Lodge ofFrance. After Randolph's work in France was completed, his thoughts again reverted to thetext on SoulSight and he returned to America with the idea of devoting his time to thecompletion of this task. However, this was not to be. Conditions had so changed that his mind becameengrossed with otherand seemingly more important affairs: First there had arisen a party which soughtthe freedom ofall men, irrespective of color, and whose energies were at the moment directedtoward the releaseof the colored men of the South. This idea had its inception in the minds of menwho had been, andstill were, connected with the Supreme Grand Lodge of Russia, men who consideredthe Emperorof Russia who had freed the serfs, as almost a God-man and who eagerly sought foran Americanleader to repeat the noble experiment. Second, the occult and mystic students inAmerica, thoughtthe efforts of General Hitchcock and others had become so numerous that it wasdesirable that anorganized effort be made to band these together into one unit.Dr. Randolph had no desire to become a French subject despite the many friends hepossessed in

that great country and the power with which he had been vested, and his mindtherefore turnedtoward the establishment of the Fraternity in America. For some years the greaterpart of his timeand thought was directed toward this end, while at the same time he was keenlyinterested in the"new freedom party" which was silently at work.In about the year 1858, his first efforts proved successful, and the first Templeof Rosicrucia wasestablished in America with Headquarters in Boston. Meanwhile, he continued tofunction asSupreme Grand Master of the Fraternity with Headquarters in France, which positionhe helduntil 1863 when he appointed a successor for France but still under his guidance. In 1861 Dr. Randolph visited California, conducted a series of lectures there onoccultism, mysticism and the objects of Rosicrucianism and established the Grand Lodge forCalifornia. Histask completed, his mind once again turned to the thought of completing the textbook dealing withSoul Sight through the medium of the Magic Mirror. Ten weeks after his arrival inCalifornia heleft for the Orient there to seek at first hand material on which to base theinstructions which werefrom the basis of his book which when published bore the title, Seership, of whichthe presentvolume is the first reprint under the present regime.Dr. Randolph's dream was two-fold: First to visit all the places where had laboredthe greatteachers of the past such as Mahomet, Plato, Jesus, Pythagoras, Heber and manyothers, andthrough association with these places and the vibratory forces still present, comeinto touch withthe spirit of their teachings and work; second, to find out for himself, whetherthe spirit of theteachings of these great Masters differed essentially and to such a degree thatthe follower of oneMaster and his teachings, could righteously condemn the believer and follower ofthe spirit of theteachings of another. What he desired, was to learn the truth, the soul of theteachings of thesegreat leaders of the past. He had not the slightest interest in either dogma orschisms, as neitherone is inherently capable of saving, i.e., Immortalizing a single Soul, the spiritalone, when enteredinto and lived up to, alone possessing this power.During 1861-62, Dr Randolph successfully visited England, Scotland, Ireland,France, Malta,Egypt, Arabia, Syria, Palestine, Turkey, Greece and other nations, as well as manysects heretoforealmost unknown and certainly never before visited by a white man. He was receivedin the innercircles of the Mystic Orders of all of these countries, as his office gave himfree entry at all times aswell as the privilege of scanning the pages of the most secret manuscripts, aswell as the right toinitiation into all the rites of the various Orders. As a result of this extended trip, two books were published: Pre-Adamite Man a
