Indian StandardCARBON STEEL CASTINGS FORSURFACE HARDENING - SPECIFICATION( Fourth Revision )
This standard covers the requirements for carbon steelcastings for surface hardening.
The Indian Standards listed in Annex A xc necessaryadjuncts to this standard.
For the purpose of this standard, the followingdefinitions shall apply. The product of any of the following:a) One furnace heat.b) One crucible heat, orc) A number of furnace or crucible heats ofsimilar composition mixed in a ladle or tappedin separate ladles and poured simultaneouslyfor making a casting.
A group of castings of one grade of material, castfrom the same melt and heat-treated under identicalconditions.
This standard covers a total of three grades of carbonsteel castings for surface hardening.
5 SUPPLY OF MATERIAL
General requirements relating to supply of steelcastings shall he as laid down in IS 8800:3986.
The steel for the castings shall be made by electricarc or electric induction or such other processes asmay be agreed to between the purchaser and thema”“fact”rer.
7 PARTICULARS .TO BE SPECIFIED WHILEORDERING
For the benefit of the purchaser, particulars to bespecified while ordering for steel castings to thisspecification arc given in Annex B.
8 CHEMICAL COMPOSITION8.1 The
ladle analysis of steel when carried out eitherby the method specified in IS 228 and its relevantparts or any other established instrumental/chemicalmethods shall be as given in Table I. In case ofdispute the procedure given in IS 228 shall bethe reference method. However. where the methodis not given in IS 228, the referee method shall beas agreed to between the purchaser and themanufacturer.8.2 The manufacturer shall carry out analysis froma sample of each melt of steel and, if so specifiedby the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order, shall supply a test certificate of chemical analysisof the sample of steel for each melt.
