iPhone unlock & jailbreak
Everything you wanted to know about unlocking an iPhoneMost GSM phones sold in the US are SIMlocked to ensure the phone is only used withthe network provider at which it waspurchased. Some are only locked to a certainnetwork, while some are locked to a specificSIM card to prevent usage on another voice or data plan. The US does not have any specific SIM lockinglaws, and many providers will actually unlockyour phone for you once your contract haslapsed and your account is in good standing.SIM locks are usually used on more expensivephones, such as the iPhone, since it provides aconsistent stream of revenue through amonthly service plan. This contract enables theprovider to sell the phone at a cheaper rate(often at negative margins) since they haveguaranteed profits.
Why unlock your phone?
If you regularly travel overseas, it’s generally cheaper to switch to a foreignnetwork and enjoy local rates, or with a prepaid account. The savings aresignificant enough that it might be worthwhile to purchase anunlocked iPhone through various online outlets. The unlocked phones are generally moreexpensive, as they are free of any contracts, but still cost significantly less thanthey would at full retail, without a service contract.Another advantage to an unlocked phone is the ability to use your own preferrednetwork with a phone that may not be available for purchase within that network.
What about jailbreak?
Jailbreaking a phone is different than unlocking it. The process removesrestrictions on third party applications that the manufacturer enacts. This wouldallow, for example, users to run Linux on iPhone rather than the iPhone operatingsystem, or download some games and apps that would previously not bepossibleNot long ago, if a user wanted to unlock their phone, it required significantexpertise in modifying the hexadecimal code within the phone’s software. Today, there are several easy-to-use applications available that will allow the user to jailbreak and unlock an iPhone with one click of a button. (i.e. iPhone Dev Teamor Ziphone). Youtube contains a considerable number of demonstration videosshowing each and every step of the process.
