A Quick Look at the AVE File Format: AVE MAG vs AVE PDF
AVE is the acronym for Adaptive Viewing Experience. The AVE reader behavior will change depending of the content by following this characteristics:

It is an XML based format. The final container is a ZIP archive (Extension . ZAVE) containing XML data describing the structure of the document, its content, and enrichments (interactive features). The container ( ZAVE) also holds all the media used by the document such as images, videos, PDFs, HTML archives, as well as any other resources referenced by the document. AVE is a dedicated format for hybrid content: text, media, interactive content, games, etc... AVE has four variations: AVE Comics, AVE MAG, AVE PDF, AVE Reflow... or a mixture of the aforementioned. AVE invokes the best reader component in each context. AVE reader component already deployed on several platforms : iOS, Android, WebOS, Web,... All Aquafadas authoring tools are able to export in AVE format.

Upgrading
If you already have our plugins installed and are in production, you should only upgrade when that production cycle is over. Please contact the Aquafadas Technical Support Team before doing so by clicking here. If you want to save the old plugins before you upgrade, just incase you need to roll back to an earlier version of the product, you should follow these steps: 1. Navigate to Macintosh HD/Applications/(Your Version of InDesign)/plugins. In this folder you will find a folder named Panels. This folder contains your current version of the Project Manager and Interactivity panel. 2. Change the name of the folder to the name of the version. Example: Panels_2.0.11 3. Then run the installer. 4. If you need to roll back, just remove the current Panels folder and rename the previous folder Panels again.

V. 3.

Rolling Back to an Earlier Version

If you need to roll back to an earlier version you can follow these steps: 1. Backup all the projects you would like to keep using the Export button. This will save your current projects and all your metadata. Once the earlier version is installed, you can Import your DPE files using the Import button. 2. Before you run the new installer, rename your new version folder to Panels_(Version Number) in plugins folder in InDesign. Example: Panels v2.11

3. Rename the folder located in Library/AVEDigitalPublishing/db. The folder contains the database and cant be downgraded. You will need to rename it. 4. Run the previous installer. 5. You will now be running the previous version once you restart InDesign. 6. Dont be surprised if the AVE Project Manager is empty. This is normal because the database has been replaced and the new one is empty. But your projects remains at the same place they were saved. You can use the Import feature to import your saved DPEs you exported in step 1.

Quick Tour
VII. 1. Guided Tour of the AVE Project Manager
1. Open The AVE Project Manager tool palette 2. Select AVE Publishing > AVE Project Manager. The left hand side of the window contains the Project List displaying all your saved projects.

The right hand side of the window shows the Project Structure of the selected project. Each column in this view corresponds to a single InDesign file, and displays the page thumbnails. If you change your selection in the project list, the Project Manager will show all of the InDesign pages related to that project. At the bottom of the Project area, there is a toolbar with the commands that apply to a project. They are as follows: Create, Import, Export, Duplicate, Refresh, and Delete. Below the Project Structure is Relink Project Assets, Synchronize Project, Project Settings and Zoom. Back to TOC 34 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

The generation buttons above are: Generate Project, Test, and Retrieve. First lets create a new project to see the basics of our digital publishing system.

1.1. Create an AVE PDF Project

1. Click on the button located under the project list. A popup dialog will appear:

2. Choose the type of project you want to create. We currently support two types: AVE MAG: This is a project where you have no existing document. You will therefore create the pages from scratch or use the templates provided within the application (For Testing). The current page size supported in this mode is 1024x768 pixels, which corresponds to an iPad in landscape or portrait mode. AVE PDF: With this type of project you can import existing InDesign documents to build the final document. It allows you to start from a printable project and to enrich it, in order to transform the original document to a digital format. In this first example we chose AVE PDF to show you the basic interactions allowed by this type of project.

4. The Project manager will process your file for a while and then display the thumbnails of the pages in the project structure.

5. After each import, dont forget to re-link the images contained in your imported project, otherwise the AVE plugins will not be able to publish these images correctly.

1.3. Export
Now its time to see the file rendered on an iPad. 1. To publish you need to first choose Generate Project. 2. The Project Manager will probably ask you to generate the articles imported. 3. Click Yes and wait for the end of the process. If there are images in your articles, Photoshop will start automatically to process them.

2.2. Add Content to Your Articles

InDesign opens a window with a blank document. You can start designing a simple page with some text and a picture. Once saved, the page appears in the project structure. You can add a new page by clicking on the Add button You can also use the Pages panel as you would normally do in InDesign. Keep adding content to your magazine until you get a project structure that looks like this: under the first page.

2.3. Publish and Transfer Your AVE Magazine

Your articles need to be generated before being published. You can generate your articles one by one since it is one of the actions available in the menu shown above. Alternatively you can click Publish and it will generate the articles that need it. Generating all the articles at the same time can be slow if your magazine has a lot of long articles. Photoshop will open automatically to process the images in your articles. Click here to learn how to transfer your publication. Once the transfer is finished, your magazine will be displayed in myKiosk. Just tap on its thumbnail to read it.

Guided Tour to AVE Interactivity

To add interactivity to your publications, open the AVE Interactivity panel. 1. Go to AVE Publishing > AVE Interactivity. The window that opens is divided in two parts. The upper part is generic and is used to manage the object visibility depending on the Page Orientation. The lower part reacts to the items selected in your InDesign document. If nothing is selected, it will remain empty. If you select an item that has no interaction assigned it will display all the interactions available, as in the screenshot on the right. Depending on the type of item, some interactions will be grayed because they are not compatible with the item.

1.2. Slideshow
1. Select an image or an empty frame in your InDesign document and assign a Slideshow interactivity. 2. You have the choice between two types of slideshows: Simple Slideshow and the Slideshow With Thumbnails.

1.3. The Slideshow With Thumbnails

This feature has the same settings as the Simple Slideshow. However, it contains additional features.

1. First you have to choose how many images are going to be displayed and the placement of the thumbnails. 2. Once you click on Create the Slideshow, the frames for the thumbnails are automatically created and placed in your InDesign document. The thumbnail images have to be defined in the InDesign layout by the designer.

3. When you add pictures to the content list, you will also need to add the thumbnail in the corresponding frame. If the thumbnails are placed vertically, the order is the same as in the content list, the first to be displayed is the one at the top. If the placement is horizontal, the order is from left to right, the first picture to be displayed is the first one on the left.

1.4.

Movie
The movie interactivity can be assigned to a empty frame or a frame containing an image. Before explaining the settings, we must warn you about the video compatibility of the iPad. It cannot play just any video format. The video files must be encoded for iPad and the easiest way to do this is using iTunes. See screenshot below.

1.6.

HTML Page
This interaction allows you to display a web page in your publication. It can be assigned to an empty frame or an image.

1.7.

Actions
Actions are triggered by a gesture (tap, scroll, etc.) on an interactivity item. For example, the Button items only purpose is to trigger an action when a tap occurs. The first thing to do when configuring an action is to choose the type of action in a selection list.

Change Content Index

This action will only have an effect on slideshows. A simple way to see how to configure this type of action is to create a slideshow with thumbnails (see chapter 5.1.1). Once you create this type of slideshow, the Interactivity plugin automatically creates the thumbnail frames. Select one of these frames and you will get something like the screenshot below in the interactivity panel.

The thumbnail frame is in fact a button that triggers a Change Content Index action when tapped. The target content is the slideshow (Content ID #3948) and the index that has to be displayed is the fourth image. The index count starts at 0, this is why the fourth index is number 3. Each interactive content has a unique Content ID displayed in the top right corner of the Interactivity panel.

Go To Web
Opens a URL in a web browser, like a link in a web page. Since it works like a link, lets try to create some content that looks like a link and triggers a Go To Web action: First, create a text frame with the Type Tool. Choose a blue text color and underline it. Second, transform this text frame into an image by assigning a To Image interactivity (see chapter 5.1.6). You can now configure an action in the lower part of the interactivity settings of your text frame. Choose Go To Web in the Add Tap actions selection list and click Create. Finally, enter the address of your web page in the URL field.

Go To Article
As its name indicates, the Go To Article action creates a link to an article within your digital publication. To illustrate this we have created a text frame converted to an image. Go To Article needs two parameters: the Article ID which can be found in the Project Structure and the Page Index which also starts from zero.

Show Popup
The Show Popup action displays a popup window that contains either a Slideshow or an HTML Page. The settings of these items, are the same as those outlined in previous chapters except for one panel. It allows you to set the size in pixels of the popup window. Tap outside the popup to close it (be careful not to display your popup in fullscreen).

Change Object Visibility:

As its name indicates, this is an action that changes the visibility of the targeted object.

Show Fullscreen
The Show Fullscreen action displays the target picture or slideshow in fullscreen. Here you just click Select to select the target object. The target objects fullscreen option will automatically be checked and you will not be able to uncheck it unless you disable the action.

Interactivities Specific to AVE PDF

This interactivity guides the reader through the text of an article. When smart reading is enabled, just double tap on the beginning of the article and then click Next to read it. First perform a multiple selection (press the Shift key while selecting) of the text frames on the first page of your article. Second choose Smart in the AVE Interactivity palette. It should now display a list containing the items of the first page like the example bellow. To add text frames for the following pages, click Add an Item then click Select, and select the desired text frame.

2.2. Reflow
This displays a popup containing the text of the article that the user has tapped on. The popup contains a button allowing you to increase or decrease the size of the font. After a font resize, the text automatically reorders itself into justified columns. Hence, Reflow. If the popup is too small to display all the columns, swipe horizontally to see the rest of the article. To close the popup, just tap outside it.

To set a Reflow interactivity, select the text block you want to be clickable and select Reflow in the AVE Interactivity palette. In the settings of the Reflow, it is possible to modify the height and width of the popup. Choose between four templates. Next, select the items to be added to the popup. You should set a style (title, interTitle, body, etc.) to each one, otherwise the layout in the popup will not match your articles layout. You will need to separate the titles and the body in different frames.

2.3. Automatic Meta

The goal of the Automatic Meta is to generate Smart Reading, Reflow and Image enrichments automatically by performing a text recognition process on an article. Before we explain how to setup the text recognition, be aware that the process will only recognize text placed in the Story Editor. To open it, select the first text frame of your article then click on the Edit Menu and select Edit in Story Editor (Command + Y). Then make sure that all the text for your article is present. You can also use character styles or paragraph styles for the titles and the body of your text. It will help you to set up the text recognition. To use the Automatic Meta, select an article from an AVE PDF project, click on to show the actions menu and select Automatic Meta. The document recognition setup window opens within the Project manager.

In the first panel of this window, the first checkbox enables the text recognition. The second and third checkboxes set the system to add Reflow or Smart Reading or both. The last checkbox enables image recognition. When checked you can choose whether you want the user to see each picture in full screen or to be able to zoom them. Choose the same settings as the example on the right and click Next.

The following panel is the reflow setup. First choose the template and the size of the popup. Then two tabs will appear. The Styles tab allows you to link the character and paragraph styles of your InDesign document to the styles of the template. The Fonts tab allows you to link the fonts used in your document to the styles of template.

Finally, the image panel is simple as it only displays three options. Clicking Next in this last panel will start the recognition process and the automatic addition of enrichments. Before doing that, please close the AVE Interactivity palette because it can interfere with the automatic enrichment addition. Once the process is finished, you can open the AVE interactivity palette to check if the enrichments were added correctly.

3.1. Three Ways to Transfer Your Publications

To view your magazine on an iPad, the application myKiosk must be installed on your device. If you have not yet installed myKiosk, you can download it from the iTunes store: http://itunes.apple.com/en/app/myKiosk-for-ipad/id419222583?mt=8

Wifi transfer with myKiosk Web Interface

The first part is the same as the previous transfer. Start myKiosk on your iPad and enable transfers. Then open your computers web browser and enter the URL given by myKiosk in the address. It will open the myKiosk uploader page.

Now retrieve the publication file from the AVE Project Manager. We call this kind of file a ZAVE file because of the . ZAVE extension. To obtain the ZAVE file for your publication click Retrieve ZAVE. .

A popup window will open to allow you to change the name of the file and the destination folder. Return to the myKiosk uploader webpage and fill in the form. The collection, author and publisher fields are not required. But it is better to fill them in if you have a lot of publications in myKiosk. To choose the file ZAVE file to upload, click on the File selection list and then click Send to start the transfer. File Transfer with iTunes Back to TOC 58 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

This procedure does not require your iPad to be synchronized with your computer, so you will not lose any files stored on your iPad when it is synchronized with another computer. First, retrieve the ZAVE file for your publication. The method is explained in the previous chapter. Once you have the ZAVE file, connect your iPad to your computer and start iTunes. In the iTunes interface, open the Apps tab of your iPad and scroll down the page to see the File Sharing section. myKiosk should be displayed in the Apps list. Select it, then drag and drop your ZAVE file into the myKiosk documents. Once the transfer is complete, your publication should appear in the myKiosk app on your iPad.

VIII. The Project Manager Panel in Depth

The AVE Project Manager is where you store and manage all of your digital publications. This section of the documentation explains all the features of the Project manager panel. To launch the Project manage Panel choose AVE Publishing > AVE Project Manager.

VIII. 1. Logging in
Every time you launch the Project Manager panel, you will be prompted to login. You can either choose to Work Offline or Go Online. If you just want to quickly get started and not connect online, you can just type your email into the user name field and then you can choose to Work offline. To login, you use the same login information you entered on the Aquafadas website to download the software(we call this an AVEPublishing account). Logging in allows you to connect the Title, App, and Issue information you enter into AVE Publishing. This allows for better organization of your projects.

The AVE Project manager Login Window.

VIII. 2. My Projects

In the My Projects section of the panel you define the projects you want to create. For example if you published a monthly magazine, you could save your projects here by month: April, May, June, July, etc... When you create a project it acts like a container that stores your InDesign documents.

2. You must also choose whether you want to use AVE PDF or AVE MAG. AVE PDF has the same layout as your printed material. It does not utilize the two orientations where a separate horizontal and vertical layout are created. Instead, it renders a project that when viewed vertically on an device displays one page and when it is viewed horizontally it displays page spreads (Two side-by-side pages). AVE MAG can make a project that has either all horizontal pages, all vertical pages, or both orientations. Both of these orientations can be created within one InDesign document.

For more information about the difference between AVE MAG and AVE PDF see A quick look to AVE file format: AVE MAG vs AVE PDF. If you choose AVE MAG you can decide which orientations you want to use for your project. AVE PDF automatically makes both orientations. Horizontal is the spread view and vertical is the single page view.

Note: To see how both orientations are handled in the AVE Interactivity panel go to Changing the Page Orientation (AVE MAG only) section.

3. Select the device profile you want to use.

A device is defined by the screen size and the density. The screen size is the physical screen dimensions that are categorized as: Extra Small screen, Small Screen, Normal Screen, Large Screen, Extra Large Screen. The screen density is the number of pixels that can fit in one inch. The density is categorized as: Extra Small Density, Small Density, Normal Density, Large Density and Extra Large Density. The user doesnt have to create a project for a specific device, but for a group of devices that is defined by the Screen Size/Density.

4. Click OK to create your new project.

5. Your new project will appear in the projects section of the panel. Click on it to select it.

VIII. 3. Project Structure

In the project structure section of the panel you can make a New blank document, Import an InDesign file you have already created, Or add from a template supplied by Aquafadas. Separate InDesign files (Articles) can have different user interactions on a device. This depends on the kind of project you define: AVE PDF or AVE MAG as described above. In AVE MAG, an article is a single InDesign File. This allows you to create stacks of InDesign documents that allow for downward navigation into an article on a device (This however can be shut off in the Project Settings to allow for only horizontal navigation). Back to TOC 63 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

In AVE PDF, an InDesign file is just a part of a book and user can consider the entire project as one InDesign book regardless of the number of separate InDesign documents.

New: The New button creates a new blank document in correlation to the orientation you have chosen for your project. Import InDesign file: You can import existing InDesign documents into your new project.
Note: This will not automatically change your document into the correct orientation of your project. You must change your document size manually when using AVE MAG. When using AVE PDF you can leave your documents as spreads. AVE MAG does not support Facing Pages (Found in Document Settings, Allow Document Pages to Shuffle, or Allow Selected Spreads to Shuffle (Found in the Drop-Down menu of the Pages Panel).

Add From Template: You can choose from a list of templates provided to you from Aquafadas (For testing purposes).

VIII. 4. Articles in AVE MAG = Document Spreads in AVE PDF

Each InDesign document you either create or import into your project appears in your project structure. You can add single-page documents or multiple page documents. You can decide how you want your navigation to work in the Project Settings later. Since articles can have multiple pages, this is how vertical navigation within articles is accomplished in AVE MAG.

This is how articles appear in the Project Manager panel.

Delete: This will remove an article from the project structure. In the confirmation dialogue, you can choose to remove the file from the disk permanently.

VIII. 5. Project Manager Buttons (Above Titles)

Creating a new project: To create a new project you need to click on the plus sign in the bottom-left corner of the Project Manager panel. Import: You can import DPE files you have exported as backups or versions directly into the Project Manager panel. The DPE file contains your whole project, all of its settings, metadata, the InDesign documents, links and fonts for your project. Export: This exports your entire project as .DPE file. The DPE file is a self contained file that contains your whole project, all of its settings, metadata, the InDesign documents, links and fonts for your project. The DPE file is like Adobes Package feature on steroids. Package by itself would not collect the Project settings, metadata, or images you have added to enrichments. Images you add to enrichments such as slide shows do not end up in your links panel. Therefore they would not be copied using Package. The export function is also a practical way to save versions or periodically backup your work. It is also useful to send someone a version of your entire project. Duplicate: You can duplicate an entire project into another project. Make sure you have a project to duplicate into prior to duplicating. Refresh: Refreshes the AVE Publishing titles and issues. Delete: Removes a project from the list. You can also decide if you want to erase those files from your hard drive. Back to TOC 67 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

VIII. 6. Project Manager Buttons (Below Project Structure)

Relink: Relinks the project assets by selecting a folder. Relink can also relink the enrichments links that do not show up in the links panel.
Note: Use Relink to promote a collaborative workflow. If each designer works on a specific part of an entire project with local assets, the designer in charge of the final build step will face an issue: how can he retrieve all the assets. The Relink goal is aimed to solve this issue. By giving the parent folder path, the Relink will parse the entire folder including the subfolders to relink the assets.

Synchronize project: The synchronize project button allows a user to point to a folder with InDesign documents contained within it or in sub-folders and import those documents into an existing project. This feature can be used in collaborative workflows. Several users can synchronize to a folder on a server. No two users can open the same InDesign document because the file lock is managed by InDesign. Synchronizing a project does not import the Project Settings. 1. First you select the directory of the InDesign documents.

2. You can choose whether you want to import that document by clicking on the Apply button. For example, you may not want all the InDesign documents to be brought into the project. InDesign files that are Sub-Layout enrichments would also show up in this list even though they are links. By unchecking Apply those documents would not be imported into the Project Structure. You can also periodically synchronize your documents when working on a server in a collaborative workflow. Status alerts a user whether or not a document is open, or has been changed (saved) since the last synchronization. 3. Your files are imported into the Project Structure. If you Hide Modified Files you will only see files that have not been modified since the last synchronization to the folder.

Note: Synchronize Project promotes a collaborative workflow. You can store all of your documents for a project on the server. Then each person who needs to collaborate on the project can synchronize to the project on the server. No two users can have the InDesign document open at the same time (This is a

basic feature of InDesign. That is why a lock file is created next to an InDesign document every time the document is opened).

You can change the orientation for a project at any time. You are not allowed to change the device size of a project. If you do not pick the correct device when the ZAVE is made, the ZAVEM (manifest file) will not contain the correct metadata for the device. You will need to create a new project and use Synchronize Project to rebuild the project for correct output.

AVE
The Ave tab is where you control the settings for the Reader, the Menu Bar, and the Navigation Bar. This is where you can change the look and feel of the menu bar that appears at the top of your device when your in your App.

Reader (in an AVE MAG Project)

Navigation Mode: Columned navigation allows a user to navigate downward into article with multiple pages. Linear mode turns off downward navigation so a user can only swipe horizontally to the next page. Allow Navigation via Swipe Gestures: When this is checked a user can use swipe gestures to navigate to the next page (This is the default). When this is unchecked, a user can only navigate to the next page with interactive buttons. These buttons and actions need to be defined in InDesign. Article Transition Mode: Swipe, Arrow, And Arrow Overlay are applied to the pages within an article. The normal action to navigate to another article is to swipe the page. In previous versions, the swipe action could not be cancelled, nor did you have immediate feedback. Page Transition Mode: Swipe, Arrow, And Arrow Overlay are applied to all pages, not just from article to article. You can now choose one of the two other options: Arrow or Arrow Overlay. In doing so, you will get an immediate feedback when you start swiping the page. The user will see an arrow appear on the edge, when there is more content beyond that edge. You can cancel the swipe by moving your finger back to its original position. In some Applications, this greatly enhances the navigation. Remember the Last Page the user was on when Close Document: When a user closes the application and then relaunches it, the App will remember the last page that was viewed and take the user back to that page when the application is relaunched, if this is Back to TOC 71 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

checked. The default setting is that this is not checked, so every time you relaunch the application it takes you back to page 1. Remember the last page of an Article when user leaves article: If this option is checked, and a user navigates out of an article, when they return to this article it will still be on the last page viewed. The default behavior is to not have this checked so that articles always reset to view the first page upon return. For example: A user reads a issue with downward article navigation from start-to-finish. If this was checked, the second time the user went to read the article, the App would remember the last page of the article viewed (So the user could continue reading where they left off). Summary Article Index: The number of the article index lets you change the page location when a user clicks on the Summary button. For example, you might want the Summary button to lead the user to the 2nd page of the issue, to the Table of Contents. Reader (in an AVE PDF Project)

Story Direction: Give the direction the pages turn. For example, in Japan books are read from right to left. Restrictions on Zoom: You can choose between this three values:

If the Zoom is active, user can zoom in the document. If the Zoom is active for Smart Reading only, user cannot zoom outside of a SmartReading area. Back to TOC 72 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

If the Zoom is inactive, user will not be able to zoom. The added feature is that the AVE PDF file size will be smaller because the PDF will not be generated, only the preview pages. Content Fitting Modes: This settings manage the way the page will appear in the reader. Fill: Pages are displayed in a way that fills the whole screen.

Fit: Pages are scaled down in order to fit inside the screen.

Smart: Only used with double pages. In horizontal mode, both pages will fit inside the screen. In vertical mode, only one of the two pages will fit inside the screen.

Smart Center: Only used with double pages. In horizontal mode, only two pages will fit inside the screen.

Snap: When Snap is checked the pages will snap into position when the page is turned.

Menu Bar
This is the readers top bar. The first setting is a checkbox that allows you to disable it, this is not recommend, as it will prevent you from closing your publication in myKiosk. In the Bar Settings section, you can decide whether the menu bar will always be visible or not. You Back to TOC 73 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

can also change its look by changing its type, height, color and transparency. In the Menu Items section you can change the content of the Menu Bar. The items at the top of the list are placed at the left side of the bar. The items at the bottom of the list are placed at the right side of the bar. You can drag and drop the items in the list to change their position in the bar. You are able to change the text of the items and the background image to give a different look to the buttons. It is also possible to add or remove items with the + and - buttons under the list. Each item performs a specific action except for Flexible Space. Close: Closes the publication. Page Label: Displays the page number and the total number of pages. Settings: Opens a popup containing the readers settings. Help: Opens a popup containing tips for the user. It is possible to add other items, but their actions have not yet been implemented at the time of writing.

AVE PDF
AVE PDF manages both, Spread View or Stack View whereas AVE MAG manages only Stack View. So for the Stack View definition, please see the AVE MAG Stack view description.

In the Spread View you only place your finger on it to make it popup. It displays the thumbnail of the page pointed on the bar in a popup. In the settings you can of course change the aspect of the bar by modifying the height, the color and the popup size. You can set the bar to display the page numbers instead of thumbnails. Fonts Management
For ePub3 you are required to upload the fonts for processing. However, ePub3 only supports OTF fonts. In order to make your other fonts work as well, we have developed our own font conversion mechanism. Simply select the fonts you want to embed, regardless of their format. If they are TTF or Postscript fonts, we will transcode them and add them to the final ePub. If you click on the Update from Project button, all the fonts in every document will be added to the list. You can select the fonts you wish to embed and click Apply to apply these fonts to the project. You can also use the Import Fonts button to import fonts directly from a folder. For Fixed Layout, you must embed Fonts. For Reflow Layout, you can choose to embed or not. If you embed the font, the end user will not be able to change the font in the reader itself even if the size will be changeable. If you dont embed the font, user will be able to change the font, but the rendering will not be as close to your format as it was when you embed the fonts. In AVE MAG you need to embed the fonts in this panel for the Read Aloud and basic Scrollable Text enrichments. For AVE PDF you dont need to embed the fonts in this panel. However, with AVE PDF projects that use the Reflow enrichment need the fonts to be embedded.

VIII. 8. AVE Project Manager Settings

You can find out what version of the plugins you are running by clicking on the cog wheel in the top-right corner of the Project manager panel.

8.1. Preferences

Enable Publish Optimization: This is a preference that searches for duplicate images used within your ZAVE file. Where images are used more than once, only one file is uploaded to your final ZAVE, and all the instances of that image point to that 1 saved image. This can greatly reduce your final file size. Use Bonjour for detection of devices: If you turn off Enable Bonjour for device detection, when you create a Preview or send to myKiosk, you wont see a list of detected devices. Instead you will just type in the IP address of your iPad manually. This preference Back to TOC 79 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

was added because at bigger publishing houses, there could be 50 to 100 different devices to discover, and it wastes time trying to find just your device when testing. Enable Image Publish Optimization: This is the preference that scales every photo that is used in both your layout and in any interactivities. This means that every photo is optimized to the correct size using Photoshop. This feature makes your project size smaller to optimize the final download size. However, you can now shut this option off during production to make your myKiosk rendering time faster, and then turn in back on when you publish the entire issue. External License File: This is a special file supplied by Aquafadas for premium enrichments you purchase. Photoshop Version: You can specify what version of Photoshop you want to use in conjunction with InDesign. They do not have to be from the same suite.

VIII. 9. Previewing your Articles in My Kiosk

When you are ready to view your document in myKiosk you can either export a single article or the entire project.

9.1. Previewing a Single Article

VIII. 11. Retrieving a ZAVE or ePub

ZAVE files, which are your fully rendered project are needed for final publishing. Typically these files need to be hosted on a public site by the customer. These issues are then downloaded into Apps either for free or when a user purchases the issue. When your project is completely done and tested, you will need to Retrieve a final ZAVE file. You can then either remotely host (Downloaded when purchased or acquired through your App, or embed in your Application (Downloads when you acquire your App). A ZAVEM file is also created. This is the manifest file. This manifest is the file that the user needs to load in AVEPublishing.com to describe which devices can be managed for a specific project. These ZAVE files can be also be side-loaded onto any device running myKiosk without needing that device to be synced to the iTunes account of the computer you are sending it from. All you need is for both the computer and the iPad to be on the same wireless network.

The AVE Interactivity Panel in Depth

IX. 1. Using the Interactivity Panel
The AVE Interactivity Panel is used to change the orientation of your layout and to add almost every kind of enrichment (interactivity) supported within our system. Since all of our enrichments are located in one central panel, it make it very easy for a user to add interactivity to their AVE PDF, AVE MAG, or ePub3 files. 1. The AVE Interactivity panel is located in the menu in AVE Publishing > AVE Interactivity

2. When you open the Interactivity panel for the first time with nothing selected, the panel provides instructions on how to place interactivity into a document. First you must select an object in your InDesign document. Then you can select the type of Interactivity you would like to add.

Changing the Page Orientation (AVE MAG only)

If you chose both horizontal and vertical layout when you setup your project you can change the orientation of the document using the AVE Interactivity panel. Both orientations are stored in one InDesign document. This means that elements within your layout already exist in the opposite orientation. Therefore, text changes made on one orientation are automatically updated on the opposite orientation. 1. Use the Change Orientation button to access the opposite orientation.

2.1. Page Orientation Settings

Follow these steps to find the orientation settings for your project. 1. To check the settings of your project, choose the Project Settings button in the AVE Project Manager panel.

2. In Project Settings you can determine whether or not you have horizontal or vertical orientation checked.

You can either have an all horizontal or all vertical layout in your project or you can have both horizontal and vertical. You cannot have a an orientation where just a few pages have the opposite layout. 3. When both of these are checked you can access you opposite layout by selecting the Change Orientation button in the bottom-right corner of the AVE Interactivity panel.

Both orientations are stored within one InDesign document. When you change the orientation, the opposite orientation will already contain all of the elements you placed on the first orientation. This means that text changes made on one orientation are automatically made to the opposite orientation.

Actions
Every action you create has four basic ways you can define the action. You can Tell either the Reader, a Layer, a Frame (Using Frame Picker), or Frame (Using Frame name) which action to perform. An Action is called by an object to interact. So the action list depends of the object kind. For example the action Set Content Index is not applicable to the Image object, but to the Slide Show Object. So to define an Action, you need first to select the source object and ask it to execute a certain action. Examples: If the destination object (here id #213) is just an image then actions list will be:

3.1. Defining the Action

But if the destination object is a Slideshow, then the actions list will be:

The only case you will see all the actions is if you select the destination object using the name:

In this case, because the name can belong to an external InDesign file, the tools show the full object action list except the reader actions list. It belong to the user to give an known action.

3.2. Defining the Trigger Event

Actions can be defined for Tap (When a user physically taps on the enrichment).

Some enrichments such as Slideshow can be defined on scroll. This means that when a user scrolls through the Slideshow an action can be launched.

The Slideshow enrichment lets a InDesign user pick slides to automatically make a slideshow for a device. Slideshows only support JPEGs and PNG files. 1. Draw a frame on your InDesign page. You can insert an image into the frame so that your page thumbnail will show an image in this area. If you dont place an image in the frame, the frame will appear blank on thumbnails used for page navigation (You will see this in your thumbnail in the Project Manager panel). 2. Choose the Slideshow enrichment.

2.1. Simple Slideshow

The Simple Slideshow is a slideshow without buttons.

2.2. Slideshow With Thumbnails

When you choose the Slideshow With Thumbnails option, buttons (image frames) are automatically made for you that will navigate to that slide in sequential order (Change Content Index action is automatically applied). Images are not automatically placed in the frames that are made. These need to be placed manually in InDesign.

1. Choose the Slideshow With Thumbnails enrichment. 2. Choose the number of slides that your slideshow will contain. 3. Choose the orientation of the slideshow buttons: Left, Top, Bottom, or Right. 4. Choose Create the Slideshow.

2.3. Defining the Slideshows Behavior

Item Name: Each item has a unique name you can define. Maintain Frame State: Remembers the last state of an object. As you interact with an object, it changes to different states. If you navigate away from the page, and then return back to the page, this setting can remember the last state of the interaction when the user last interacted with the frame. All enrichments can remember their visibility status. The Slideshow enrichment can remember the last slide index. The Draw activity can save the drawing. Enable Fullscreen: Opens the slideshow fullscreen on the device when a user double-taps the image. Enable Scrolling: Allows user interaction to manually scroll through the slides in the slideshow. Show Page Control: Page Control is the small white dots on semi transparent black line at the bottom of the Slideshow. The page control shows the user which Content Index they are currently viewing and lets them navigate through the indexes. Use Background in Layout: You can set the background color when you are fullscreen. You can also use this color in the normal layout. Cell Background Color: If the images are PNGs with transparency you can define a color for the transparent pixels behind the slideshow. Back to TOC 108 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

This is what Feed files look like.

To define the URL for feed files, click on the Gear to the right of the Feed icon.

Deleting Files
To delete files you need to highlight the image in the list and choose the - button.

Content Index Number

This number is defined by the order of the images descending from the top of the list of files or feeds. This is how buttons can call for a specific slide within a slideshow.

Moving Files
To change the order of the files in the list, you can highlight an image and drag and drop it into the correct position to change its order.

Crop
Each image can be cropped individually within a slideshow by controlling the corner points on the frame. If you change the size of the Back to TOC 110 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

Movie Enrichment

The Movie enrichment lets you add movies to your interactive documents. You can either add the files to your project (which can cause file bloat and longer download times for your ZAVE), or you can host the files and URLs so that movies will stream when a user is connected to the internet. Movies must be in the MP4 format. 1. Define a frame for your movie. You need to put an image in this frame so that your page thumbnail will show something on the page. The inserted image in this frame is not what a user will see on the page. That is defined in the Alternate Image section. 2. Choose the Movie enrichment. You do not just place the movie in the frame like you do when creating an interactive PDF in InDesign.

File: Choose file to navigate to the MP4 file on your hard drive. This file will be embedded in your final ZAVE.

URL: Type the URL of your Movie. You will need to host this file yourself on a public URL, so that when a user is connected to the internet, they can download the file.

3.1. Graphic User Interface

Hide Controls: You can choose whether or not the controls are visible or hidden for the Movie by checking or unchecking Hide Controls. With the Animated Image enrichment you can add frame-based animations to your interactive documents. These animations need to be saved as individual JPEG or PNG (PNG supports transparency) files. 1. Create a frame for your enrichment in InDesign. If you have made the animation a specific size, use those dimensions when you create the frame in InDesign. If you want an image to show up in the thumbnail of the page, you will need to add an image in the frame. 2. Choose the Animated Image enrichment from the AVE Interactivity panel. Item Name: Each item has a unique name you can change. 3. Use the + sign to select the files that will be animated in order of their file names.

Infinite Loop: Click on the check box to repeat the animation infinitely. Animation Type: Choose the animation type. Scroll: A user can interact with the animation by scrolling. AutoAnimation: The animation automatically plays with no user interaction.

Show AVE Enrichment

In the Show AVE enrichment you can place ZAVE files into other ZAVE files. This means that you can have documents that dont show up in your navigation. You can build games or other InDesign article collections as individual ZAVE files and link to them with this enrichment. 1. After youve finished designing and testing a separate project, you can export a ZAVE file by clicking the Retrieve button. You will be prompted to save this file to your hard drive. 2. Define a frame in InDesign. This frame will be used as a button that will open the ZAVE file. If you want this image to show up on page thumbnails, you will need to place an image here. You can also define an image in this frame that explains what someone is about to open. 3. Choose the Show AVE enrichment in the AVE Interactivity panel. Item Name: Each item has a unique name you can change. Maintain Frame State: Remembers the last state of an object. As you interact with an object, it changes to different states. Anchor Enrichment

The Anchor enrichment can be used in multiple ways. You can have an anchor within a SubLayout then when it becomes activated (visible), hides or shows a layer on the InDesign page. You can also define Anchors within your layout and make buttons that navigate to Anchors. Anchors can be a more useful solution for TOC navigation. Instead of using the Go To Article action of a button, you can use Go To Anchor. When you use Go To Article you need to define an article number and specific page. If your destination page changes its page number, you need to update any article buttons you may have created. If you make frames that are anchors within your article, or even in other articles, the button will always take you directly to the page the anchor exists on. Item Name: Each item has a unique name you can change. This is useful when you need to call a specific item while using Frame (using frame name). Channel Id: Each Anchor can have a different Channel ID. This means that if you have several Anchors on a page, and you can set them to different Channel Ids. At a scroll position, only one anchor can be activated per channel id. The idea behind Channel IDs is to deal with conflicts caused by multiple anchor actions. Color: You can apply a color to your Anchor at an opacity. Opacity: By default Anchors are invisible and set to a 0% opacity.

Drag & Drop

The Drag and Drop enrichment is a free enrichment based on our Maze game. Drag and Drop allows a user to move any object on the screen. When that object reaches a designated spot (Action Area) an action can occur. 1. Draw a frame for the Drag and Drop Enrichment with the Rectangle Frame Tool. 2. Place a cursor on the page that you want the end user to be able to move.

Cursor example.

3. Draw a frame and add the Drag and Drop Enrichment in the AVE Interactivity panel. 4. Draw a frame to define the action area. 5. Define the cursor frame to drag by clicking on Click and choose a frame

6. For track, you can decide if you want a track or line to appear as you drag your frame. You can also pick the color and size. You cannot define the shape of the track like you can in the full Maze game.

7. For drop destination Frame, you can pick Roll over or drop in. Roll Over: The action will trigger as the cursor frame passes over the action frame. Drop in: The action will only happen if the cursor frame is over the destination frame and the user stops dragging and removes their finger from the screen. This is comparable to On Click or On Release functions in InDesign.

SubLayout Enrichment

SubLayouts are used for scrollable frames. This is accomplished by placing InDesign documents within InDesign documents. This feature is Grayed-out until you choose a frame that has an InDesign file placed into itself. Scrollable frames can scroll both horizontally and vertically. This means that you can text and images that are scrollable within a frame. You can also create draw effects, where draws can slide horizontally out from the edge of the document. SubLayouts also allow you to have multi-page InDesign documents within the SubLayout. 1. To create a SubLayout first define the size of your frame in InDesign.

ePub File Generation

Version 2 now gives you the power to publish your project to the new ePub3 Reflow Layout and Fixed Layout formats. These ePub formats are suitable for distribution in standard marketplaces such as iBookstore, Amazon, and Kobo. With the arrival of high resolution color tablets and smartphones, and e-Readers, the original ePub3 format has been extended to add the ability to render pages that would preserve the fidelity (look and feel) of the original layout in InDesign. Because the new EPub3 format is based on standards such as CSS, XHTML, SVG and Javascript, our software will maintain the orientation, fonts and font placement, and interactivities you made for your tablet output. A number of enrichments are already supported in our ePub3 export, such as slideshows, videos, html5 animations, read-aloud, and actions.

XI. 1.

Creating an ePub Project

Click here to review the project setup.

1.1. AVE MAG or AVE PDF?

An ePub can be set in the either format: AVE PDF or AVE MAG. An ePub can be set as landscape, portrait or both. But if both orientations are chosen, only the landscape will be generated. For documents that you have already made for print, you should choose AVE PDF.

1.2. Facing Pages or Non-Facing Pages?

If your document is setup as spreads with Facing Pages your document will display as a spread in iBooks as you turn the pages. If you want each page to just stretch over the spine of the book, you can turn off facing pages. It is important to note that you cannot have enrichments placed over the spine of the document (Center of page in non-Facing Pages document). All images and elements over the spine are split into two to render properly on each page. For example, you cant put a video in the middle of the page.

1.3. Reflow or Fixed Layout?

Fixed Layout renders the page as it looks in InDesign. Reflow layout fill flow the text and images into the ePub reader in the order you define the elements using Guided Reading. Click here to review the Guided reading setup.

Migrating your content into clean Templates

To begin using our tools for ePUB3 file generation you can either begin with a document that was already designed for print, or a document that youve designed using our AVE Publishing System that already contains interactive features. 1. If you are using documents that have been designed for print, you should create a new blank document within our system.

2. Define this document as Facing or Non-Facing, depending on your needs. Change the document size to the size you desire. 3. Save the document. 4. Migrate your content to the new page using the Move feature in the pages panel in InDesign.

XI. 3. XI. 4.

Adding Interactivity
After youve decided on your layout options you can add slideshows, videos, html5 animations, read-aloud, and actions to enhance your readers experience.

What Types of Fonts are Supported?

For ePub3 you are required to upload the fonts for processing. However, ePub3 only supports OTF fonts. In order to make your other fonts work as well, we have developed our own font conversion mechanism. Simply select the fonts you want to embed, regardless of their format. If they are TTF or Postscript fonts, we will transcode them and add them to the final ePub. To embed your fonts, go to Fonts Management section in Project Settings.

XI. 5.

Embedding Metadata
You need to fill in all the metadata as this is the information that will travel with and identify this ePUB file.

5.1. Converting Page Items to Images

You can automatically convert type to an image by grouping it with another object. All groups are automatically turned into images. You can also convert text to outline. However, none of this text will be searchable in the ePub.

5.2. Preflight
You can also Preflight your build to ensure that the enrichments youve added are supported in ePub3 and also whether or not you embedded your fonts correctly. Back to TOC 169 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

1. Choose Generate Project. 2. Choose Preflight Build.

XI. 6.

Generating Your ePub File

1. In the export window you choose ePub.

2. Choose Reflow or Fixed Layout.

Note: When you export an ePub3 fixed layout file, the first 3 pages will be generated, and the rest of the text will be scrambled on all the following pages. Watermarks will be added to the larger images as well.

3. When you are ready to generate the actual ePub file, you can choose the Switch to Release Mode button. In order for you to be able to use the Switch to Release Mode button, you must first purchase a licenses at http://avepublishing. aquafadas.com/en/#/home. The license is connected to your AVE Publishing portal username. Therefore, when you login to your account in the Project Manager panel it will recognize how many licenses you have. Once you use a license, it will be connected to your project. This means that you Back to TOC 170 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

can generate as many ePub files as you want for that project. 3. You can then export to ePub. Remember that during this process you need to be connected to the server for fonts to be converted to Open Type. 4. You can preview this file by sending it to myKiosk on your iPad.

5. You can then send it directly into iBooks by clicking the Open in iBooks button in the top-right of the screen.

You can also Retrieve the ePub file and save it locally to view your ePub file in an ePUB3 reader such as Readium for Chrome. Use the Retrieve button in the Project Manager panel in InDesign. Once the ePub File is generated it is yours and is ready to be published in any of the stores I just mentioned.

AVE and AVE HD (Retina)

The new iPad was released on March 7th, 2012, and the feature that probably stands out most is its Retina Display. The new display has a 4 times higher resolution compared to the first iPad and the iPad. There are two parts to consider, the actual app (the container for the content), and the content, or publication, such as a book or a magazine issue. In AVE AppFactory you add optimized graphical elements for Retina and non-Retina displays. The retina display has exactly 4 times the resolution of the previous displays, and, more importantly, the same aspect ratio, because the number of pixels in both dimensions, width and height, has been doubled to 2,048 by 1,536 pixels. Publications created with Aquafadas InDesign plugins consists of both pixel-based and vector-based content. Pixel-based content is also known as bitmap graphics or raster images, which can be scaled down without quality issues, but cannot be rendered larger without losing quality. Vector-based content is based on mathematical functions, and the quality of vector-based content is not related to the screen resolution of a device. Text, unless it was converted into an image, is always vector-based in Aquafadas Digital Publishing System. That means that text in publications looks perfectly sharp on iPad 1 and 2, and it does not need to be modified at all to look even sharper on the new iPad, due to the much smaller pixel size of the Retina display, and even at high zoom levels. 1. Design using graphics at 300 dpi. 2. When you are ready to create the ZAVE, output two files one in AVE, and one in AVE HD. 3. Upload both formats into the Publish section of the AVE portal. The correct AVE will be downloaded depending on the device.

XIII. 1. Creating a ZAVE

You can then either remotely host (Downloaded when purchased or acquired through your App), or embed in your Application (Downloads when you acquire your App).

XIII. 2. Hosting a ZAVE

You must host the ZAVE file on a public URL for most of our Apps. This means that the ZAVE files are not downloaded when someone acquires the App. When a user buys or gets an issue for free, that issue ( ZAVE) is downloaded into their App.

XIX. Testing Checklist:

All the items you should check before you begin your tests.

XIX. 1. Publishing Licenses

Check for Publishing licenses and they are connected to the correct App. 1. Navigate in a browser to: http://avepublishing.aquafadas.com 2. Go to Titles and Collections. 3. Scroll to the bottom of the page to make sure you have Publishing Licenses. If the licenses are still Pending, you havent unchecked Test in the Publishing section. You will need to uncheck Test in order to publish.
Note: If you have purchased products and they dont appear in the AVE Publishing Portal, contact us immediately. If you had a product, and then deleted the product to start over, you will lose the connection to the license and also need to contact us.

XIX. 2. Application Licenses

Check that you have bought an Application license and they are connected to the correct App. 1. Navigate in a browser to: http://avepublishing.aquafadas.com 2. Go to App Specifications. 3. Choose the Settings tab. 4. Scroll to the bottom of the page to make sure the licenses you bought are associated with the correct product.
Note: If you have purchased products and they dont appear in the AVE Publishing Portal, contact us immediately. If you had a product, and then deleted the product to start over, you will lose the connection to the license and also need to contact us.

XIX. 3. Issue Setup Check

1. Go to: http://avepublishing.aquafadas.com Back to TOC 236 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

2. Go to Publish. 3. Make sure that you have created a new issue. If you havent created a new issue, click here to find out how.

4. Click on the pencil to edit the issue.

5. Make sure you have created an Issue Type in the general section.

6. In the Release Information section you need to uncheck Test. If you are using Push Notifications you need to check Push Notifications For Application.

7. Make sure you have uploaded your ZAVE file.

XIX. 4. Uploading ZAVE Files

1. When you are done with the InDesign creation and testing phase of your project you can create your final ZAVE file. You just need to choose the Retrieve AVE or ePub File button.

Back to TOC

237

Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

Two files will be created: a ZAVE and a ZAVEM file. The ZAVE file is the issue you created. And the ZAVEM is the manifest file that carries the metadata for the ZAVE such as creation date and time. 2. You need to host this ZAVE file on your own server or web space that can be publicly reached as a URL. When a user Purchases this issue, it will download into their App from that URL you have defined.
Note: A good way to test your URL is to paste it into a browser window. It should begin downloading the ZAVE file automatically. If it doesnt you need to correct that problem.

3. Remember that you can upload multiple ZAVE files. One for Retina, and one for Low Res. The device will automatically download the correct ZAVE. 4. Type the URL, select the Manifest file, check the Push Notifications For Applications option, and choose Save Modifications.

For Updates: Once a ZAVE is in production you can only modify it a selected number of times. Always go through the user interface and upload the new ZAVEM then replace the ZAVE file at the specified URL on your server. Never change the ZAVE file without uploading the ZAVEM (manifest) file, otherwise the kiosk will refuse to read the file. Once a new ZAVEM has been uploaded the Ave Portal will increase the version number for the issue and all Kiosks will notify their readers, when they attempt to read the file, that a new version is available. 8. Your URL should now appear at the top of the screen. Remember that you can save multiple versions and upload them.

XIX. 5. Defining the in-App purchase in the Portal

You need to make sure there is something to download. That can be a free issue you defined (which does not need an in-App purchase) or an issue you defined as an in-App purchase. 1. Go to: http://avepublishing.aquafadas.com 2. Choose App Specifications. Back to TOC 238 Copyright 2012 Aquafadas Inc.

3. Choose the Settings tab. 4. Make sure that you have a product or products available.

5. If you check Product is Free, you dont need to define an in-App purchase.

6. If it is connected to an in-App purchase, you need to make sure the Internal Product ID matches the ID in iTunes connect. If it doesnt, contact us immediately and we will change what you have defined. This applies to both regular purchases and Subscriptions. Click here to view that portion of the documentation.

XIX. 6. App IDs

If your application IDs dont match your Bundle ID you defined in the Apple Developer account, wont be able to test your App. Click here to find out how to make sure your App IDs match. If they dont match contact us immediately to remedy the situation. You cant change it yourself. If you attempt to delete the App and make a new one it will detach the license you bought and further complicate the remedy.

XIX. 7. AppFactory
1. Make sure you have downloaded the latest Certificate into App Factory. Please check that you have the latest version of AppFactory. 2. Make sure you have added all the necessary icons and metadata. Click here to review setting up an Elegant Kiosk.

XIX. 8. Xcode
Xcode is needed to build your App with AppFactory. It is the Provisioning Profiles that link your App to everything you have setup in the Apple Developer and iTunes Connect. 1. Make sure that your Provisioning certificates are still valid.

2. If you need to Add more devices for testing, you will need to: Add those devices through Apple Developer Throw away your current Provisioning Profiles Edit, Download and Install the new Provisioning Profiles Quit AppFactory if it is running and launch it again (It reads the profiles on launch). Generate a new IPA and then distribute that IPA (VIA FTP, Dropbox, etc..) They can then drop that file into their device using Xcode to install the App for testing.
