CARL ROGERS
1902 - 1987
Person Centered
Created by Carl Rogers. It is a form of humanistic therapy deals with the ways in which people perceive themselves consciously rather than having a therapist try to interpret unconscious thoughts or ideas.
There are many different components and tools used in person-centered. - Active listening, genuineness, paraphrasing. The real point is that the
Facilitate the clients exploration of the parts of themselves that they have denied or distorted, to promote the self actualization process. Create the conditions necessary for positive growth. Focus on the person, not the problem. Develop openness to new experiences, trust in themselves, internal source of evaluation, and willingness to continue growing.
Goal
Fully functioning individual Is an individual who has ideal emotional health (Seligman, 2006). The fully functioning person will be open to experience, lives with a sense of meaning and purpose, and trusts in self and others.
Techniques 1. Unconditional positive regard 2. Empathic understanding 3. Congruence (genuine, openness, transparency)
The person centered view of human nature, is generally good. What is good ?
Human Nature
People are inherently good the basic nature of the human being, when functioning freely, is contractive and trustworthy Carl Rogers,1961
Human behavior is the result of a personal need to grow and develop to full potential self actualization
Therapy helps the clients move towards his full potential (self actualization)
Rogers basic assumption: people essentially trustworthy, they have a vast potential for understanding themselves and resolving their own problems without direct intervention of the therapists part of they are capable of self directed growth if they are involved in a specific kind of therapeutic relationship.
Empathy refers to the ability of counselors to enter the world refer or clients. Empathy is also a process of allowing themselves to experience the process of counselor suffered mental and emotional clients while understanding and appreciating the meaning of this process.
Empathy
Positive regard is term for things like love, affection, attention and nurturance.
Positive self-regard, that is, self-esteem, selfworth, a positive self-image. Getting positive regard on on condition calls conditional positive regard. Because we do indeed need positive regard, these conditions are very powerful, and we bend ourselves into a shape determined, not by our organismic valuing or our actualizing tendency.
Healthy Individual
The aspect of your being that is founded in the actualizing tendency, needs and receives positive regard and self-regard, so its calls the real self. It is the you that, if all goes well, you will become. we are forced to live with conditions of worth that are out of step with organism valuing, and receive only conditional positive regard and selfregard, we develop instead an ideal self. This gap between the real self and the ideal self, the I am and the I should is called incongruity. The greater the gap, the more incongruity. The more incongruity, the more suffering.
