Medicare offers people with Medicare the option to join some clinical research studies for the diagnosisand treatment of illnesses. If you join a coveredclinical research study, Medicare will pay some of the patient care costs.
What are clinical research studies?
Clinical research studies (also called
clinicaltrials
) are one of the final stages of a long andcareful research process to help patients live longer,healthier lives. They test new types of medical care,like a new cancer drug. The studies help doctorsand researchers see if the new care works and if it issafe. They may also be used to compare differenttreatments for the same condition to see whichtreatment is better or to test new uses for existingtreatments. All studies are based on a set of rules called a“protocol.” The protocol tells you the following:Who can or cant join the studHow long the study lastsHow often you will get tests or medicationsOther details of the study 
Why do people join a clinicalresearch study?
People may choose to join a clinical researchstudy for any of these reasons:Compare different treatments for the samecondition to see which treatment is better.

Test new uses for existing treatments.Gain access to new treatments that arent widely available.Obtain medical care from doctors who areleaders in their field of medicine.Help future patients with the same illness.
Why do people choose NOT to joina clinical research study?
People may choose not to join a clinical researchstudy for any of these reasons:They are concerned about possible risks.Some patients dont benefit from the new treatment.The study may require more visits to thedoctor, or the treatment takes more time thanstandard care.Before you agree to take part in a study, aresearcher or someone involved in the study willexplain it to you. Then you will be asked to signan informed consent form. This form describesthe clinical research study and what is beingtested. It will also explain any possible risks toyou. Before you sign the form, ask questions soyou understand and are comfortable with what will happen during the study.
