I am a fourthyear Marketing,Advertising and PRstudent and I work forthe Union in my (limited!)spare time. Working asstudent staff memberfor the Union involvesmanning the Receptionon Level 2 of the UnionBuilding, City NorthCampus where I selluniversity merchandiseand NUS cards amongstother things. My otherrole is working on thereception in the ARC(Activities & ResourceCentre), this is wherestudents come to joinsocieties and sports. off to Wolverhampton’sCivic Hall, anticipating afun-lled day of debating.NUS conferences arerenowned for bringingout a wide array ofpolitical activists andso on arrival we weregreeted by the usualbarrage of socialistleaets and yers slatingour national leadersand government andincluding other issueswhich we should beaware of. Neverthelesswe made it throughunscathed and withoutany papercuts.The morning commencedwith an empoweringspeech by Wes Streeting,NUS President and asusual he was greeted bya great eruption of noisefrom the conferenceoor. The whole day wentswimmingly until justafter lunch, debates onIsrael and Gaza startedcoming through all of thediscussions. While I thinkthat this is a debate worthhaving, this was not thetime or the place. Thiscame to a pinnacle whenmembers of socialistworkers and the socialistmovement occupied thestage.
