Subject Interest : MOVIE REVIEW _____________________________________________________________________________ _ I. II. TITLE OF THE MOVIE MAIN CHARACTER/S Channing Tatum Amanda Seyfried Richard Jenkins Henry Thomas III. PLOT SUMMARY John Tyree Savannah Curtis Mr. Tyree Tim Wheddon : DEAR JOHN

John Tyree is an enlisted Special Forces Army member who took a vacation and met Savannah Curtis, a wealthy young women. Both of them fell in love with each other and for two- weeks, their affection blossomed and becomes deep. But war and betrayal separates them only to find each others arm again at the end. IV. REVIEW / REACTION Dear John is a movie whose story talks about love between John and Savannah. Different kinds of love. This is not the ordinary Romeo and Juliet scenario wherein social status separates them. Their story revolves on understanding, patience, betrayal, sacrifices and doing the right thing. On the other hand, it also talks about denials, reflections and realizations on all four major characters.

Johns character is well played. His way of thinking and reactions reflects his past. A child who grows with an autistic and obsessivecompulsive dad who is different from everyone else and a mother whom he almost never met. He becomes independent and relays on himself to do everything. The pain he kept went out when he was forced by Savannah to face the fact that the father who raised him is special. It can be noted that John, can also be considered as a person with a mild- autism as well. It can be seen on the way he reacted when hes mad or angry. Deeper study is needed to further discussed this character. Savannah, on the other hand, is quite interesting. Her affection towards person with special needs came from nowhere. Her sacrifice to help Tim and Allen, by letting John free and marrying Tim instead, spending all her fortune, seems superficial and unrealistic. The character and characteristic alone is unbelievable and too perfect. Although, after deeper analyzation, it can be said that her affection and attraction towards special people resulted to falling in love with John. It can be said that she has a Messiah Complex believing that she can save everybody. In reality, she is fulfilling her needs to be loved, adored and to show her love. One of the most effective scene and interesting comparison of the human being in the movie is when John went to his father and read the letter, I quote, There's something I wanna tell you. After I got shot, you wanna know the very first thing that entered my mind? Before I blacked out? Coins. I'm eight years old again on a tour of the U.S. Mint. I'm listening to a guy explain how coins are made. How they're punched out of sheet metal. How they're rimmed and beveled. How they're stamped and cleaned. And how each and every batch of coin are personally examined just in case any of them slipped though with the slightest imperfection. That's what popped into my head. I'm a Coin of the United States Army. I was minted in the year 1980. I've been punched from sheet metal. I've been stamped and cleaned.

My edges have been rimmed and beveled. But now I have two small holes in me. I'm no longer in perfect condition. His comparison of human evolution and growth development to the production of coins makes sense and somehow, reflects the truth. That some of us may not be perfect but to some people, we are special and treasured the most. Just like the mule coin kept by his father. Lastly, the scene where he went back to see Savannah and leave afterward summarizes the theme of the whole movie. That love is about sacrifices and doing what is right. We may not be happy at first but the thought that right will always be right, it may not feel right, but it will remain the right thing to do and at the end it will prevail, is true. As a whole, the Dear John movie is a touching and refreshing movie. So simple yet effective. For some who wants to fully understand the real story behind, one need to watch it over and over again and analyze to have a deeper understanding about the character and the message that lies at the story.
