Voyage to the great Lakes

Discovering a North American Treasure
aboard the 130-guest Yorktown
July 8 15, 2013

Dear Vanderbilt Alumni and Friends, Close to home is one of the great natural wonders of the world. The Great Lakes is a vast inland sea, a majestic natural treasure that the United States and Canada share. Yet very few travelers have explored the lakes by ship. Our summer voyage is your opportunity to discover a world-class family destination, right in your own backyard. Great cities have emerged on the shores of the lakesChicago, Detroit, Toronto, to name just a few. The lakes water countless small towns and farms. They are a highway for shipping, with a direct link to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway. In summer the lakes are a paradise, with opportunities for boating, swimming, fishing, and all manner of water sports. But there are also vast stretches of lakeshore that are as pristine as when the Native American tribes paddled their canoes in these waters. Because this voyage is at the perfect time of year for two or three generations to travel together, we are inviting passengers to bring along younger guests (ages 7-21) to join our special Young Explorers Program at a specially reduced rate. This program leads groups of similarly aged children and young adults on a series of educational and recreational activities designed from a childs perspective. Young Explorers will: learn about ship structure, nautical terms, and basic navigation with an officer-led tour of the Yorktown; be introduced to the history of Michilimackinac from its habitation by the Ojibwe and Odawa tribes; compete in an onboard treasure hunt; learn about the physical characteristics and geology of the Great Lakes; and ride through the massive sand dunes on the shores of Lake Michigan on dune schooners. You neednt travel far from home to enjoy a great cruise experience with your family. There are unforgettable destinations at your doorstep. This summer, join us aboard the 130-guest Yorktown and discover for yourself the beauty and the majesty of the Great Lakes. Sincerely,

Carroll Kimball, BA84 President, Vanderbilt Alumni Association

Explore a World-Class Destination on this Voyage to North Americas

A One-of-a-Kind Voyage
Carved millions of years ago by nature herself, the Great Lakes are a treasure cherished by Americans and Canadians. Our carefully crafted itinerary includes that natural wonder, Niagara Falls, and picturesque Mackinac Island, where time passes at the leisurely pace of a carriage ride. For our shore excursions, weve struck a balance between the serene and the exciting: weve included the galleries and shops of quaint Saugatuck, a popular summer destination since the early 1900s, as well as Clevelands Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, where the collection is housed in a superb building designed by famed architect I.M. Pei, among other sites. Time is precious, and that is one of the things this cruise gives you. Never will you be rushed from one site to another. On our cruises, you have the leisure to stop for lunch at a lakefront restaurant, or chat with an artist in a gallery. Most of the places we visit are small towns, where people move at a different pace than city-dwellers. This cruise gives you an opportunity to experience the unhurried rhythm of life along the lakes.

in Your Own Backyard Inland Seas

Freedom to Explore
Most of the ports on our Great Lakes itineraries are off limits to foreign vessels, but because Yorktown flies the American flag, we can access small port towns that are the hidden gems of the inland seas. Neither are they accessible to mega cruise ships. Aboard Yorktown, you will travel with a small group of people who share your interests, who regard travel as a life-enriching experience. When we go on shore excursions, you are exploring with friends, not getting lost in a crowd of tourists. And at many of the ports we visit we offer a choice of excursions and options of other activities, such as kayaking, at no additional cost.

A Small Shipboard Community of Like-Minded Travelers

Experience has taught us that our cruises attract interesting, outgoing people. They love to explore and learn. They tend to be well-traveled. They are confident. They make friends easily and have interesting stories to tell. Aboard Yorktown, you will never be lost in a crowd of strangersyou will be part of a warm, welcoming community of new friends.

For Children and Young Adults Ages 7-21
Experienced youth education counselors will lead groups of similarly aged children and young adults in the Young Explorers Program, a series of educational and recreational activities designed from a childs perspective, including: A tour of Yorktown conducted by an officer, introducing basic information about the ships structure, nautical terms, and elementary navigation aids A fun and educational lesson on the history of Michilimackinac from its habitation by Ojibwe and Odawa tribes through the European discoveries and fur trade to the War of 1812 A discussion of the physical characteristics of the Great Lakes, including basic geology A treasure hunt throughout Yorktown The opportunity to ride the massive sand dunes on the shore of Lake Michigan on speciallydesigned dune shooners

The Ecology of the Saugatuck Dunes

Michigans Saugatuck Dunes is a remote strip of shoreline along Lake Michigan, about 2.5 miles long. Some of the sand dunes rise to a height of 200 feet. Among the dunes are 21 wetlands (also known as wetpannes), an extremely rare environment and the habitat for plants and wildlife that exist nowhere else, including Blanchards Cricket Frog and the Zigzag Bladderwort. The foredunes (the dunes closest to the lake) are kept stable by a host of wildflowers and grasses that are as lovely as they are hardy, including marram grass and smooth rose. During our voyage, take a ride aboard specially designed dune schooners through this interesting scenery and along the Zigzag Bladderwort towering sand hills.

Over nine million people visit this city on the lake, founded on the wealth of steel and oil barons. Our tour of the city will include the striking I. M. Pei-designed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, located on the Lake Erie waterfront. Also tour the superb Cleveland Museum of Art, noted for its collection of European paintings, as well as American, Asian, and African Art, or the Cleveland Botanical Garden. going Over Niagara Falls in a Barrel

The first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive was Annie Taylor, a 62-year-old retired finishing school teacher. She made her daredevil stunt in 1901 and emerged from her wooden barrel a bit bruised but otherwise unharmed. At least eleven other daredevils have tried to replicate Taylors exploit, not always successfully. Today, going over the Falls is illegal. Nonetheless, in 2003, an American stuntman named Kirk Jones went over the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side in nothing but a wet suit. Incredibly, he survived, but he was fined $2,300 by an Ontario court and banned from Annie Taylor beside the barrel she used to go over Canada for life.

Yorktown
Yorktown is the ship that makes this itinerary possible. Theres a congenial ambiance aboard this comfortable vessel that was built specifically in America to cruise the waterways of North America. The ship flies the American flag and is staffed by a seasoned, friendly, all-American crew. And Yorktown guarantees a unique experience: thanks to its American registry, it can operate itineraries that are off-limits to foreign vessels. The ship accommodates only 130 guests in 69 cabins. All cabins are exterior and have two twin beds or one queen bed and private facilities; Superior category cabins have a walk-out balcony. Yorktowns chefs are masters of American regional cuisine. At meals, all guests are served in a single, unassigned seating in the dining room, where the large picture windows offer unobstructed views of the passing scene. Coffee is available all day in the Lounge, which is also the setting for afternoon tea. Upon your return from an excursion, complimentary refreshments will be waiting for you. In the evening, cocktails are served as the ships pianist performs on a Steinway piano. In addition, Yorktown has a large sun deck and Internet access.
